Hey all,
I am new to the group and just wanted to say "hi" and introduce
myself. I am 32 years old and live in Virginia. I will be free to
play most weeknights and on weekends every once in awhile. I am
relatively new to RPGs (though I have wanted to get involved in a game
for a few years now) and any advice that you all could give me would
be great. I have been playing video game and computer RPGs for
years. Right now I am playing DnD online and really enjoy it.

So what is the next step? I know I need to create a character. I am
still working on some ideas and fleshing out a back story. I look
forward to seeing you all online very soon. Thanks in advance for the
help!

Also make sure you get 1.8+ Traipse, you can find the download at
www.openrpg.com . Do not get the standard download, unless Traipse
will not install for you. You will also likely need to download
python. We use that program to run our games, it is little more than
a glorified chat room with die rollers and a map screen.

We have a good number of dispossed nobles, so finding a different
backstory will add some variety :-D

Choose a Race, Choose a Class, Choose Feats and Skills and then Spells
if applicable. Tell us what you think you want to play and we can try
to make that character the best as possible.

Yeah, thank you for all the help! I am working on a pretty cool back
story for my character. I am really enjoying creating my character's
history I think I am going to play as a Human Sorcerer. Does anyone
have any suggestions on how to best create such a character? I am not
married to my race, so feel free to suggest a new race. Thanks!

Well, since no one has responded, I'll try and help you out. Human
Sorcerers are fun, the extra feat and skill points are really going to
help you. Make sure you start with a decent charisma. I would start
at 16, but if you want to weaken your other stats, you can bump it to
17 or 18.

Something like 8str, 14dex, 14con, 8int, 8wis, 17cha is a good
starting point. 9str, 14dex, 14con, 10int, 8wis, 16cha is another
good set. The latter gives you another strength for carrying
capacity, and 2 more int for another skill point/level.

As far as feats go, there's a lot you can do. As a human, you'll have
2. Eschew Materials is a good one. Decent second choices would be
Improved Initiative (hey, you're squishy, you want to react and get
out of the way before they can attack), Martial Weapon Proficiency (if
you want a good melee weapon), Rapid Reload (lets you reload a
crossbow quicker, so you can fire more often), Spell Focus or Spell
Penetration.

Another feat alternative would be point blank shot and precise shot.
That would let you not hit your teammates with your spells, in the
middle of combat.

For skills, sorcerers are pretty limited. Concentration, Knowledge:
Arcana, and Spellcraft are great choices. Bluff is another good one
if you have extra.

What type of sorcerer would you like to be? Any type of magic that
you'd prefer or any role you want to fill?

As for abilities, again depends on the character you want to play, but
generally importance goes Cha->Dex->Con
So for 25-PB (good/extreme)
STR: 8 / 7
DEX: 14 / 14
CON: 14 / 10
INT: 9 / 8
WIS: 10 / 10
CHA: 16 /18

as for feats, depends on what spells you'll be casting, which again
depends on your character choice:

a blaster should have Point Blank and Precise to start

Spell Focus and Greater Spell focus are always useful

Metamagic aren't that good in the beginning.

Item creation (i've never used) but if you're a crafter, perhaps

Skills: see above

Thanks for all of the help. I hope to have my character all sorted
out very soon. To that end, are we on for a game tonight? Or are we
still trying to work out the DM thing? I ask because if we are on
tonight I will make sure my character is ready so that I can join in
the game. :-)

I'd say finish the character up just in case. You still have some
hours to. And be sure to upload the character to the Wiki.
