Hi Stoneleigh United member,
Our SES addition is almost underway but other York Road corridor schools are still very overcrowded. A new school is needed immediately. We support the recommendation to build the new 700 seat school in the best location. BCPS has determined this location to be Mays Chapel site, already owned by BCPS.
Third District Councilman Todd Huff, who represents Mays Chapel, also this week came out against using the park as a school site, in addition to a vocal group of Mays Chapel residents. See article -

Dear County Executive Kamenetz,
Thank you for your promotion of a renovation and addition at Stoneleigh Elementary. I commend you for recognizing the urgent need to address overcrowding at our school as well as other schools in the York Road corridor. Thank you for understanding the urgency of BCPS’s recommendation that a new 700 seat school is needed immediately.
I am pleased to know that the County Executive supports building a new school in the Central Area immediately. The addition of new seats through building West Towson Elementary School and from the additions and renovations to Stoneleigh and Hampton Elementary schools have and will help to alleviate the immediate overcrowding in the Towson area. However, the York Road corridor schools are currently over capacity by 1,084 with projections enrollments to grow. More seats are needed to educate our children.
I appreciate your leadership to locate the school in the best possible location, the BCPS-owned Mays Chapel site. Thank you for using the Mays Chapel site, which was purchased as a school site decades ago, for a new school, as it was always intended to be used. Five of the six elementary schools sharing boundaries adjacent to the property would have a fraction of their current overcrowding alleviated by a new school. I also value that the site will continued to be used by the larger community for recreational activities, as is the case with most Baltimore County school sites. From Baltimore County's unique Joint Use Agreement, there will be ample opportunity for recreational activities on the site.
Thank you for recognizing how important the construction of a new elementary school at Mays Chapel is for the children of Baltimore County living in the York Road corridor.
I support your strong commitment to education and our children.
Sincerely,
