--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Enrollment at Stoneleigh Elementary is currently at 677 children in a building built for 499. Enrollment is going up faster than projected.

Come October 4th to hear the two options being proposed by BCPS to house our children during the construction of the addition and renovation of SES. Construction may begin as early as July 2012.

As far as we understand, the first option is for the children to remain at Stoneleigh for the 27 months of construction  (2 school years and 3 summers).

In information gathering, Stoneleigh United has learned the following about Option One:

·      Students will remain on site; however they will be shifted to different areas on SES campus several times during the year to accommodate the construction phases

·      The Kindergarten court, upper field space and playground will be unavailable due to the construction

·      Construction will take a year longer than Option 2 if students remain on site at SES

·      Dust, noise, and debris will be present on a daily basis and could disturb learning

·      Some trailers will be relocated to the back of the school, and two trailers will be removed.

The second option is to relocate the entire school community to the former Carver School for the performing Arts for 15 months of construction (1 school year and 2 summers).

In information gathering, Stoneleigh United has learned the following about Option Two:

·      For those wishing to drive their children to school, the Kiss and Go option will continue to exist

·      The County will provide buses with stops throughout the Neighborhoods, where we can still see our children off to school with our neighbors

·      All before and after school services and programs will continue

·      SES Playground equipment would be moved to Carver and there would be a large group indoor play space for rainy days outside the classroom

·      The Carver building will be retrofitted for an elementary school population

·      Construction will take one year less than under Option 1

·      Trailers will not be used at Carver

·      Each child will have a seat inside the Carver Building

In the next couple of weeks each family in the SES community will get the opportunity to vote for Option One or Two. Please come to the October 4th meeting prepared to ask questions and get answers. Thank you.
