What ideas have you tried?  What's worked for your child?  What hasn't, but might for someone else?

I'll kick things off in here!  Some of you may be familiar with Sunshine books - they've got a fabulous online resource and the best part is, they've given us all a free login to use until the end of the year!  Just visit http://www.sunshineonline.com.au/ and type in the username: sunshine2013 and the password: newzealand.  That will give you access to all of their awesome books online and also activities that the kids can do.

We'd love to hear your thoughts if you give it a go at home.  Have fun exploring!

If you prefer the idea of games you can play off the computer, there are some great printable reading games here:

Can anyone recommend any good books that children can read themselves at home?

Hi Anita, the libraries have a really good selection of early readers at different levels.  I'm going to get some for my kids to read over the holidays.  I don't want Harrison to lose the momentum he's gained in reading over the two week break! Angela :o)

Great thinking, Angela - the library's a fabulous resource, both in actually finding books and helping instill a love of reading.  Giving the kids some choice over their books gives ownership and can help hook them in.

Be sure to check out Sunshine Books (info is above) as that includes a variety of books at different levels, which can all be accessed online.

Hi Anita,

I've also discovered that the Dr Seuss books are all colour coded for different levels. Kyan's been reading Ten Apples Up on Top.

Hi

I have recently found an Ipad app for list words called Spellosaur.  While I realise not everyone will have an ipad, for those that do it is worth a look.  It allows you to enter a list of words, with exercises to learn them and then going on to spell them.  It also allows you to record the words if they don't sound right in the program.  There is also the option to review previous list and have multiple users (ie different lists for different children).  Very helpful for the Hub 1 list words.
