Hi Parents and Caregivers,
Just some quick ideas for beginning  and pre-writers. This works with children from 2 years up, they love this simple activity based on shopping.

If you are going shopping get some scrap pieces of paper and encourage you child/ren to write a shopping list of things you might need. Role model alongside them. Talking about I think we might need some bread, cereal etc. Remember making scribbles is the first stage. Drawing pictures of the objects.  Later writing letters for the start of the word such as w for weetbix. etc...

Or collect the junk mail from super markets and get your child/ren to cut out the items they may like to purchase. Cutting and sticking skills link directly to writing and children need to develop the muscles in their hands as it helps with the physicality of writing.

Last idea if it is a wet day set up a shop at home label the different items and then write a shopping list using the words from the packets it is great fun and they will not think they are learning.

Enjoy and have fun. Katherine

If your kids are excited to write at home but have difficulty varying what they write about, the Scholastic Story Starters are great fun!

Hi everyone! Could you please share your ideas here with other parents about what you have been doing with your child to practice writing at home...

Thanks!

Annabelle loves to write shopping list for me. She also likes to pretend as waitress to take order. For example, coffee, banana cakes or jApple juice.

Alexi has a whiteboard/black board and she loves to clip leaflets to it and copy the wording from them. she also recreates a writing lesion from school on the boards too. I love the blackboard/white board as its better than bits of paper all over the house! ha....
