Hey SEOM friends.

Last week, we got a notice from UPS that some of their developer APIs are being discontinued:

Reminder: Effective December 31, 2018 UPS® will disable all unsupported Developer Kit API URLs.

You are receiving this notification because our records indicate you are using an unsupported API URL: https://www.ups.com/ups.app/xml/ API name for UPS Developer Kit API transactions. Continued use of the URLs will subject your customers to unexpected outages and loss of packages with UPS.

To ensure you are using the correct URL for processing, we’ve made the latest version available in the Developer guide: https://onlinetools.ups.com/ API name. It should be used for all UPS Developer Kit API transactions.

Please verify with your IT resources that your application is using the supported production version of the URL, https://wwwcie.ups.com will remain unaffected.

For any technical questions or concerns, please submit your question via the UPS Technical support form or call 1-800-247-9035.

To my knowledge, the only UPS API interactions we have are through SEOM, where we use the OM built-in UPS integration for shipping, and we also use the UPS rate shopping.

Is this something Stone Edge is aware of?  Will this affect us?  If so, will there be a patch / fix published?

Thanks.

We are running OM Enterprise, v 5.938.

I have sent them the updates since we began receiving them months ago.

I keep hearing a better solution is on the way and we are 100% on board with it, but nothing tangible yet.

Stone Edge is aware of this change and will have a new release with the updated endpoints.  We also have entirely new shipping integrations for several carriers that will be in beta very soon.  This will render the current UPS Online Tools integration obsolete.  Both of these options will be available well before the December 31st deadline.

Thank you,

John Frazar

Chris - one other thought.  You should seriously consider a plan to move beyond 5.9x; especially with the new stuff we are building.  We will not be able to provide updates to 5.9x.  Feel free to shoot me an email and we can setup a call to discuss any road blocks that might be preventing you from upgrading.

Thanks,

John Frazar

Thanks John.

Yes, we agree we should move beyond 5.938.  We tried to do so several years ago, and had progressed to upgrading everyone to 7.x (despite user complaints about UI..) Unfortunately, we ran into some chronic performance and stability problems in the first week of production which Monsoon was not very cooperative on, so we reverted to 5.938.

With Stone Edge's new ownership and renewed service focus, we have been planning to schedule an upgrade cycle to 7.x early next calendar year, maybe March or April.

We are now into our heavy fall season, which lasts Sept - Dec, so we are very loath to do any systems changes until that is over, which means we will be pinched to get an upgrade in place in late December after our rush but before UPS kills the UPI we use.

As a temporary fix until we can get onto 7.x, do you know if the UPS API patch could be accomplished with simple changes in the SEOM VBA?  We've fixed a couple of other issues over the years in that manner, and are running just fine.

Please advise, and thanks!

It's certainly possible that the patch could be made in SEOM 5.9... we'd have to first figure out and test the fix, then determine if that could be applied to older versions.  I don't remember the last time I even saw 5.9x, so I'm no longer familiar with it enough to know off the top of my head.

I would participate in this fix as well, since we are still on 5.938. Maybe Steve or Jared could help out with that?

Hey All,

While those options have been a go to for the community in the past, Stone Edge is developing more version with new features. For on-going support and the peace of mind of future stability as well as extensibility, reach out to us so we can work to resolve the issue at the source!

Hey Chris and All others on 5.9X...

We've been on Stone Edge for 15+ years... We were on 5.9X for a long time and finally moved to 7.X after we felt things were stable. We could not be happier and have NO issues. Transition went very smoothly. No bugs. You really should consider moving now.

My 2 cents,

Cale

Are y’all hosting on private servers or have any of you put data/SEOM in the cloud or use it remotely? (7.0 and above). Our main concern with upgrading is that we also need to upgrade the server/box/large box thing in the other room that’s running out of space.

Thanks!

Cathy

Stone Edge can be run in the cloud, but the cost isn't a savings in the long run over having your own server and desktops. The issue is having SQL server and remote workspaces in the cloud. It works, but in the long run we determined it was more hassle and more expensive than maintaining our own server and desktops.

Maybe others have a different experience?

Hi, John Frazer, or Anybody Else who has an answer, for that matter --

We're currently running version 7.024.  Does anyone know if the UPS API expiration affects this version?
We use the SEOM Pack & Ship module.

I know John mentioned a new release that would solve the problem, but we have made some extensive customizations to our current version to better fit our workflow, and really can't afford to lose them by installing a new release.

Did ever find out more about this? Do we users of 5.938 have to find a fix? I called Steve about it but haven't heard anything...

Folks we are wrapping up a change that will serve as a direct replacement to the UPS Online Tools integration.  We will let everyone know when this is available.

Thanks John

Aside from your new shipping module, will there be a patch for older versions of SEOM? Or will we need to upgrade SEOM in order to continue using UPS?

Hi, John --

I'm seeking a little clarification.  If I've missed the answers somewhere in this thread, could someone point them out to me?
  • We are currently running Program Version 7.024  1-Oct-2014, Standard Edition.  Will the API expiration affect this version?
  • If it does affect this version, will the change you mentioned essentially be a patch / plug-in, or will it involve a wholesale reinstall of Stone Edge?  As I mentioned earlier, we have made some fairly extensive modifications and can't really afford to lose them.

Version 7.038 has been released and is available for download on the download site.  This release fixes the UPS Online Tools URL issue that has been discussed in this thread.  According to UPS this update need to be in place before the end of the year in order to avoid any disruption in service.

Thank you,

John Frazar

Hi John,

We are running 7.022 Enterprise edition and have added on quite a few customizations. Do we lose our customizations if we were to upgrade to 7.038?
Also, is there a UPS patch available for our current version in case we choose not to upgrade?

Thanks
Morris

Also interested in a solution for 5.938.  We are not on support, so if anyone who offers consultation has a solution, please chime in.

Thanks

Cathy,

If you wanted to upgrade my understanding is you'd have to have at minimum the lowest priced support contract in order to access the download files.

I'm on the latest version of StoneEdge and it is VERY stable... not like the old days.

If you needed a consultant, Steve at Technology Copilot is great and of course Barney Stone (the original founder of StoneEdge) are both available:

Hope that helps!

Cale

Thanks for the info, Cale.  There are even maintenance plans available on a monthly fee if it's better for your cash flow.

Stone Edge can also assist with the upgrade, and in the off chance that there is an issue, we can permanently fix the problem right there on the spot... we never run the clock to fix a bug!  But, to echo what Cale said, 7.03x is very stable and we've had no major issues reported with it.

If you're one of those folks who doesn't want to upgrade because of the UI, you should know that we have included the 5.9 View Orders and Manual Orders screen with 7.03x!   We've also completely rewritten the Manual Orders screen, so you have choices. There's really no reason NOT to be current.

Let us know if we can help.
