Hi Everyone,
this was sent to me and may be useful to the campaign..
Suzy

Hi there,

Sue said to say hello and that you are involved with the anti Sainsbury's campaign. I havn't been aware of the other people who are anti as I've been sorting out my own objection for Abney Park. I've put a few bits together on my blog site http://abneyfungi.wordpress.com/proposed-developement-in-wilmer-place/ and I have a copy of the plans on CD if you would like to have a look. There are a lot of them.

Gina.

Hi Everyone,
this is worth reading...
Suzy
Hi Suzy,

I've been working with a small group from Abney Park to put forward our response to the proposed development. Having got that far, and only left now with my 'report' to send to Councillor Louisa who will speak for me at the planning meeting, I began to chat to others about the process.

Last time the scheme was a lot smaller, fewer flats and with the extras of the underground cap park and removal of buildings in the HIgh Street. The consultation involved a questionaire which included a tick section of what people thought was important for the area. Those against the Sainsbury's often ticked houses as a way of saying no to shops. The increased traffic going onto a Sainsbury's was a big NO, as was taking down the High Street houses.

This time there is no removal of High Street Houses and the traffic into Wilmer Place is decreased by not having an underground car park. But there are flats, (houses), and loads of them. They are making the development into something huge, twice the height of the High Street buildings in front of them. The ground floor takes up the absolute maximum space it can possibly take.

I have talked to a lot of people and the majority of them are saying no to Sainsbury's. They don't get that the flats on top are a problem too. I think this could be a problem in itself. I am not convinced that the developer expects the building to actually get planning permission. They haven't gone into the fine details in the proposals and Hackney are letting them get away with it at the moment, (fingers crossed that changes), eg the images of what it should look like finished are not specified as to how they have been produced which is usually what happens. I think this is what they would like to build in an ideal world, and will build if no opposition stops them. But I think it is part of a softening up process, so the next plan will be the one they would realistically like to build. It will be smaller and still have the Sainsbury's etc but not quite so obnoxious.

What will that plan look like? It depends on how the objections are expressed this time. If no one cares that the flats are massive and out of keeping with a conservation area, and damaging to Abney, then they might be reduced but not by much. If the massive Sainsbury's is reduced in size a bit will it be less awful for the High Street? If they concede not to sell books or newspapers, so not to be in competition with the book shop or outside newsagents etc.... I don't know.

I think, and this is all supposition, that if not enough people object to the 5 floors of appartments they might stay next time and I really object to all those flats. Can you think of a way to spread the word that the whole block is wrong for the space not just that Sainsbury's superstore? Talking to individual people doesn't quite do this sort of job well. My blog site is mostly browsed internationally, not locally, so not many prople will see it. I've put notices up in the glaziers and pet shop in the HIgh St. as well as the front and side gates of Abney, but online campaigning is outside my experience. I have joined Stokeylocal, but can't see how to get information on there. I'm pleased you are sending my blog to them, thatnk you.

If you have any other ideas of what I should do, please let me know.

Thanks for your help so far....

Gina.
