Folks --
The forecast for Saturday is for absolutely beautiful weather.
I have heard some concerns about rough play. Please remember that it is your duty as coach to control your team, notwithstanding the presence of a referee. Rough play has a tendency to become contagious and escalate and it is much easier to deal with if it's kept in check early. Soccer is a contact sport and a certain amount of bumping while contesting the ball is acceptable, but the following behaviors should not be tolerated:
* Any pushing or use of the arms
* Contact away from the ball
* Going for the player rather than the ball
Sliding is a particular area of concern. I see a lot of U10 players sliding, particularly on the artificial turf fields. We have no specific rule against sliding, but it is a foul to slide in a way that endangers another player. Very few U10 players can slide properly and safely, and it should be discouraged in games because it is usually a poor defensive strategy. Unless a slide is executed perfectly the result is that the defensive player has taken himself out of the play.
