Hi,

I'm a computer scientist who is currently working on computational
biology and bioinformatics. Ended up in this mailing list because I
was doing research for my personal investing and wanted to do some
technical analysis using Perl (my bread and butter). The functions in
this package will definitely save me from reinventing the wheel. :-)

Thanks!

I just downloaded some human genome the other day. I had some ideas I
wanted to applicate. I'm assuming nothing will come of it, but the
idea is to learn enough bioinformatics to be able to crunch the data
meaningfully. If you have any tips on picking this up without any
background in biology whatsoever, ...

This is excellent news. Be sure to also check out http://www.geniustrader.org/
.

The stockmonkey modules are intentionally decoupled from any trading
engine, but if you're thinking about possibly automating trading, that
package might be a better fit.

Awesome. That's the cool thing about the Perl community. Almost every
problem that you can think about has been worked on by someone else.

If you're interested in analyzing genome sequences, I'd recommend
BioPerl, and R Bioconductor. Along with the lecture notes here
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/teaching/0809/Bioinfo/ would be a good start.

The other thing that's nice about Perl is that everyone is willing to
help with detailed information about ... whatever. You just don't see
it as much in other languages and platforms.
