The Month of May didn’t properly begin until this morning, but the NTT IndyCar Series was already making laps and building toward another Indianapolis 500 in the final days of April.
IndyCar competitors flocked to the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Tuesday and Wednesday for a two-day open test ahead of May’s 110th running of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
It was a Hoosier that topped the charts on Day 1, as Conor Daly and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing paced the field with a 225.394mph lap. He slotted just ahead of Helio Castroneves, who is seeking to make a record fifth appearance on the Borg-Warner Trophy. A returning Takuma Sato, Scott Dixon and Alexander Rossi wrapped up the top-five.
The test ended with a rookie on top, as AJ Foyt Racing’s Caio Collet led the way on the second and final day of running. The 24-year-old set a top pace of 226.381mph in the cooler morning session, slotting just ahead of Josef Newgarden’s 226.223mph to lead the field.
It caught Collet by surprise.
“No, I never expected that,” Collet said. “Obviously, I knew that the team have a really good background here and they’ve done really well the last couple of years, especially last year.”
Newgarden was quickest in Wednesday’s final afternoon session, setting a quick speed of 225.617mph in his No. 2 Chevrolet. The two-time winner was followed by the most recent Indy 500 champion, Alex Palou.
Jack Harvey set the quickest no-tow time on the day at 221.122mph, but left his team with work to do after his car went up in smoke.
Practice for the Indy 500 will begin on May 12, with qualifying following on May 16-17 and the race itself taking place on May 24.

MotoGP eliminate wildcards as part of 2027 rule changes (MotoGP)
MotoGP has made a big new rule change for prospective entrants heading into the 2027 season.
The FIM announced the banning of wildcard entrants as part of a group of Grand Prix Commission decisions revealed Thursday. This change comes ahead of the introduction of new 850cc bikes in 2027 and required approval of all current manufacturers - Aprilia, Ducati, Honda, KTM and Yamaha.
For the uninitiated, MotoGP offers the chance for manufacturers to field additional entries in races, with the entries typically used to test developmental work competitively. The entries are allowed on a sliding scale, with the top manufacturer - currently Ducati - banned, while the lowest tier entrants can provide as many as six wildcard appearances on the year.
This isn’t a huge change competitively, but will be notable for the lack of opportunities for surprise one-off appearances it yields. Manufacturers don’t always utilize their current available slots and MotoGP itself will be keen to limit excess bikes as factories get up to speed with the completion of new bikes for the coming year. Just two factories have fielded wildcards in 2026 and one OEM, KTM, hasn’t fielded one since it ran into financial struggles in 2025.
The wildcard ban will only involve MotoGP, leaving the door open for wildcard entrants in Moto2 and Moto3. In addition to the wildcard decision, the FIM has extended the mandatory countdown of restarts to five minutes (from three) and opted to continue tire monitoring.

 F1 returns to action in Miami after April off period (F1)
After more than a month away in an off period fueled by two race cancellations in the Middle East, the Formula 1 field is returning to action this weekend in Miami.
The race weekend itself promises to be an intriguing one, with teams bringing upgrade packages, F1 itself shaking up the ruleset and the risk of a peculiar weather-rule combination wreaking havoc on the weekend.
A dramatic slate of upgrades from all competing teams mean the cars themselves could look noticeably different under the Florida sun this weekend. Teams wisely adjusted their plans to bring sizable updates for Miami as they gained knowledge of the incoming race cancellations in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
Beyond the upgrades, the changes to rules will mean the vehicles will look slightly different on-track to the keen observer. There will be a lower recharge limit in qualifying, a change in how the batteries are charged and a shift in how much electrical power can be utilized in different sections of the lap. The hopes is that these changes will mitigate the super clipping and yo-yoing from competitors seen in early 2026 races.
In the event of wet weather - more on that in a second - the FIA has banned drivers from using boost mode to assist in overtaking.
As for the weather concerns, a situation tied to local laws could muck things up if there’s lightning - a real concern given the iffy forecast for this weekend at the time of writing. In the event of nearby lightning, the race will need to be red-flagged to allow everyone at the track to find shelter.
This should sound familiar for fans of most American motorsport, and particularly to those used to tracking the lightning clock at NASCAR races. And in Florida, the risk of red flags and stoppages will always persist. But the F1 field has four hours to work with from the current planned 4 p.m. start until Miami’s sunset, with FIA officials also given the opportunity to alter the timetable over the next 24 hours or so. So barring persistent poor weather, the field should be able to get its race in.

Here’s a peculiar stat. Texas Motor Speedway only had two wins from outside the top 15 in the 22 Cup races it hosted from 2011 through 2022. In the three years since, however? It’s had winners from 18th (William Byron, 2023), 24th (Chase Elliott, 2024) and 27th (Joey Logano, 2025), leaving the winner with an average finish of 23rd.
Would it still be better to qualify up front? Of course. But winning in Texas isn’t so simple these days.
