Hope everyone enjoyed the racing over the weekend. Superbowl next week then Daytona here come the cars.

I think having Travis Pastrana come into the NASCAR fold will bring in younger fans. When my kids realized he was racing perked up and paid attention.

Everyone take care of yourselves with the incoming weather. I know we are expecting bitter cold and blizzard like conditions next 24hrs and I’m supposed to go to Denver for Media day out here.

Early Accident Ends Hopes Of Winning For Max Gresham At Irwindale

IRWINDALE, CA (January 30, 2011) – Max Gresham had his sights set on being at the front of the pack when the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale took the checkered flag. Evidently, some of his fellow competitors wanted to be there sooner. “I guess some people in front of us got a little too racy too soon,” said Gresham after being knocked out of the high-profile short track race on Lap 27 of the 225-circuit event. “One guy hit another and they all started wrecking. I thought I had an open hole to get to through the wreck okay, but it closed up before I could ever make it. That made it a pretty disappointing night for everyone

Ganassi Racing Brings Home Fourth Rolex 24 At Daytona

No. 01 entry holds off No. 02 car for 1-2 Ganassi Racing finish DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates’ magical run continued on Sunday with their fourth overall victory in the 49th Rolex 24

Rolex 24 at Daytona Update

Through 19 hours and 20 minutes, Chip Ganassi's team were leading the proceedings.  However, it was not the favored No. 01 up front.  The No. 02 entry, shared by Juan Pablo Montoya, Jamie McMurray, Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti was leading the race by nine seconds over the No. 01, driven at the time by Memo Rojas.

However, six Daytona Prototypes are still on the lead lap after over 2000 miles of racing.  The No. 6 Michael Shank Racing Ford Riley was in third place, 33 seconds out of the lead.  A.J. Allmendinger and Michael McDowell are part of that team.  The No. 23 United Autosport/MSR Ford Riley is fourth, followed by the Krohn Racing No. 76 and the Action Express Racing No. 9.

Many teams expected to contend for the victory have had issues.  The No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing Chevrolet Riley spent significant time in the garage overnight for rear suspension repairs and lost significant time.  The No. 99 is currently running 22nd overall (14th in the Daytona Prototypes, 41 laps down.  The pole winning No. 45 for Flying Lizard Motorsports started very well, but was run into on an early restart by the No. 95 Ford Riley from Level 5 Motorsports.  Later on, Seth Neiman ran over the No. 66 Porsche 911 while avoiding a spinning Ferrari.  The No. 45 is currently shown in 11th overall and in DP, 17 laps down.

In the GT class, the No. 67 Porsche 911 currently driven by Wolf Henzler is leading the class and running 13th overall.  His lead is one minute, eight seconds over the TRG/Black Swan Racing No. 54.

For roughly eight hours, the No. 40 Dempsey Racing Mazda RX-8 led in GT and posed to score an upset victory.  Unfortunately, while leading the class by a lap, the car stalled exiting the Infield section at 9:45am.  The No. 40 is currently shown in fourth, four laps out of the GT lead.

Another car was that was very competitive early on was the No. 94 Turner Motorsport BMW M3.  The team of Boris Said, Bill Auberlen, Matt Plumb and Paul Dalla Lana was leading the GT class at 10pm Saturday when a leak developed, sending the No. 94 to the garage.  The car sat there for six hours, resulting in the race becoming nothing more than a test session.

There have been 51 lead changes thus far amongst 12 drivers, not far off of records for both.  There have been 19 full course cautions covering 114 laps.  Over 40 percent of time spent behind the BMW 1M pace car was due to heavy fog that shrouded the track in the pre-dawn hours.  A yellow that was already thrown for cleanup after an incident turned into a nearly three hour trudge behind the pace car.

Bowles Wins Toyota All-Star Showdown

Former K&N Pro Series West Champion Jason Bowles was able to avoid the near constant wrecking to claim victory in the eighth annual Toyota All-Star Showdown at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, California.  Bowles gained the lead when Paulie Harraka was spun out of the lead by pole sitter Derek Thorn with roughly 20 laps to go.  Travis Pastrana, in his stock car debut, finished sixth.  In Monday's edition of The Frontstretch Newsletter, Mike Neff will have a full recap of Saturday night's action from Irwindale.

Toyota Showdown Winner Jason Bowles

Jason Bowles got the one victory that had eluded him during his NASCAR K&N Pro Series West career. The Ontario, Calif., native drove the No. 75 Rusty Wallace Racing Experience Toyota to the win in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown Saturday night. Bowles grabbed the lead on the race’s final restart and held off DJ Kennington through the final eight laps. The win for Bowles, the 2009 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West champion, came in front of a sold-out crowd at NASCAR’s premier short-track event. While he was a three-time winner at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.) in his NASCAR K&N Pro Series West career, Bowles' best finish in the three previous starts in the 'Daytona 500 of short-track racing' was a third in 2009. Kennington, the 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series champion, drove to a runner-up finish in his debut at Irwindale.

Making his NASCAR debut, action sports star Travis Pastrana finished sixth, followed by Derek Thorn, Travis Motley, Moses Smith and NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Steve Wallace. "It was absolutely awesome," said Pastrana. "I was just happy not to be a complete road block. I learned a lot. That last green, it was just chaotic, it was four wide, three wide. I just have to thank (spotter) Matt (Crafton) for keeping me out of most of the trouble. It was a lot of fun. It felt like a win. I know I had a lot of guys in front of me a lotr of guys faster than me out there, but doggone, it was a good time out there." The race featured five lead changes among five drivers and was slowed by 11 cautions.

Sean Woodside got his 2011 season off to a good start with a win the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model race earlier in the evening at Irwindale. Woodside, from Saugus, Calif., held off former Toyota Speedway track champion Nick Joanides in a green-white-checkered finish for the victory. The 1999 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West champion took the lead on the first lap and remained out front the rest of the way.

Chip Ganassi's Team Wins Rolex 24

The four greatest trophies in American motorsports now belong to one man — Chip Ganassi. When his sports car team of Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas, Graham Rahal and Joey Hand won the Rolex 24 at Daytona in a wild final-lap sprint, it made the car owner the current winner of the four biggest races in the country: the 24-hour race, the Daytona 500 (with Jamie McMurray), the Brickyard 400 (McMurray) and the Indianapolis 500 (Dario Franchitti). Even before Pruett got out of his red, white and blue BMW-powered Riley sports car, he mentioned the “Chip slam” — winning the four biggest races in a 12-month period. No other car owner can make such a claim. In fact, no other car owner has held two of the biggest prizes at the same time. -- “I don’t drive the cars. I don’t change the tires. I don’t work on the engines,” Ganassi said. “There are a lot of great competitors who make up this team. It’s the guys who do all the work. In terms of the races, we just try to focus on the next race. That’s what we’ll do now, focus on the next race.”

While nothing is ever certain in a 24-hour endurance race, Ganassi’s place in racing history started to take shape long before sunrise Sunday. Both of his Daytona prototypes were on the lead lap, often swapping the lead with each other. A one-two Ganassi finish at Daytona International Speedway seemed certain until Sascha Maassen blew a tire and lost the rear fender on his Chevrolet-Coyote, bringing out the caution flag and setting up a one-lap sprint to the finish. Pruett, who went from third to first during the final round of pit stops in the final hour, survived a three-wide pass in the first turn to pull away to a 100-yard win over a Ganassi car driven by IndyCar’s Scott Dixon.

The winning No. 01 BMW-powered Riley sports car now has finished on the lead lap in each of the past five years. Ganassi teams also have been first or second in each of the past five endurance races. This year’s winner covered 721 laps on the 3.56-mile road course, or nearly 2,567 miles — equivalent to driving from Daytona Beach to the New Hampshire state line and back. Dixon, Montoya, McMurray and Franchitti settled for second. Although their teammates won, they weren’t satisfied. “We’re drivers. We want to win,” Montoya said. “You can’t go home being happy with second.” Barbosa, Borcheller, Max Papis, J.C. France and Christian Fittipaldi were third in the same car that won the sports car marathon in 2010.(jacksonville.com)

  • Ganassi wins Rolex 24; TRG wins touring class: America's longest endurance race came down to a one-lap sprint. No surprise, the winner ended up being the guy with more wins in the Grand-Am Series than anybody else. Three-time and defending series champion Scott Pruett drove the last leg of the Rolex 24 at Daytona and held off Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon during a final restart. Pruett's smooth restart helped him pull away from Dixon and third-place finisher Joao Barbosa after the green-white restart and clinch the Daytona Prototype class by 2.42 seconds. It was Pruett's 32nd win in the series and his fourth Rolex 24 victory (1994, 2007, 2008). It could be his most meaningful, too. This one capped the "Ganassi Slam." Ganassi became the only car owner to win the four biggest races in the United States during a 12-month period. His drivers won the Daytona 500, the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400 last year. Andy Lally led TRG Racing to a two-lap victory in the Grand Touring class. Lally claimed the pole, but started in the back of the field after failing post-qualifying inspection. The team drove the final 17 hours without a clutch.()(1-30-2011)
  • Bowles wins Toyota Showdown: Jason Bowles won the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown on Saturday night, beating Canadian D.J. Kennington by 0.501 seconds on the half-mile track. Bowles, the 2009 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West champion from Ontario, Calif., took the lead on the final restart in the 225-lap race that was slowed by 11 cautions. Kennington, the 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series champion, gave Toyota a sweep of the top two spots in his first start at Irwindale. Jonathon Gomez was third, followed by Luis Martinez Jr., Johnny Borneman, action sports star Travis Pastrana, Derek Thorn, Travis Motley, Moses Smith and NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Steve Wallace.(Associated Press/ESPN)(1-30-2011)
  • Schrader inducted in Missouri Sports Hall of Fame: Ken Schrader never envisioned starting 744 NASCAR Sprint Cup races, making millions of dollars along the way and becoming a hall-of-famer. "All I ever wanted to do was ride around in circles," Schrader said this week. "I never thought it would go quite this far." Tonight, when he trades his firesuit and helmet for a suit and tie, Schrader will add the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame to his vast résumé. Fellow St. Louisan Rusty Wallace, a retired NASCAR great, and the late Larry Phillips, a renowned short-track champion from Springfield, already are in the Missouri hall.(Springfield News Leader)(1-30-2011)
  • Ford Racing Presents Special Award to Kennedy: Ford Motor Company presented the Spirit of Ford Award to Kevin Kennedy, director of Ford Racing public affairs for PCGCampbell, during the NASCAR Sprint Media Tour visit to Roush Fenway Racing. The presentation marked just the 25th time in the 110 year history of Ford that the award had been given out. Previous winners include Jack Roush; NASCAR's Bill France Sr. and Bill France Jr.; and racing legends Mario Andretti, John Force and Richard Petty.(CMS Media Tour Notes)(1-30-2011)
  • Lionel NASCAR Collectibles launches website: Lionel NASCAR Collectables, the official die-cast of NASCAR, announced the re-launch of www.rccamembers.com which can also be reached through www.lionelnascar.com. The launch is the first phase of a multi-step web rollout that will give die-cast collectors enhanced functionality and the opportunity to interact with Lionel NASCAR Collectables via the company's new social media presence. Customers can visit the newly designed site, browse through existing product, and pre-order 2011 die-cast cars. More products will be added in the coming weeks, with the new site becoming fully integrated by mid-March. Lionel NASCAR Collectables recently hired Michelle Fannin as social media manager. In her newly created role, Fannin will oversee the company's social media presence across a variety of channels - including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and the new corporate blog.(Lionel NASCAR)(1-30-2011)
  • TRG to run full season; no deal with Waltrip for Daytona 500: Sirius NASCAR Radio's Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody has learned that Michael Waltrip will be forced to qualify for the 2011 Daytona 500 on speed, after a potential transfer of owner points from TRG Motorsports did not materialize earlier this week. The #71 TRG Motorsports Chevys finished 35th in Sprint Cup owner points a year ago, securing a guaranteed starting spot in the first five races of this season. TRG owner Kevin Buckler told Sirius Speedway that his team is geared up to run the entire 2011 championship schedule, and will announce a driver and sponsor lineup next week.(Sirius Speedway)(1-29-2011)
  • Ford Mustang in Cup in 2013? Although Jamie Allison, Ford's director of motorsports, stopped short of saying the Mustang will replace the Fusion as the automaker's entry in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series in 2013, it's abundantly clear Ford is leaning heavily in that direction. "We like what's going on in Nationwide-we really do," Allison told Sporting News. "The more brand identity we have & and Mustang is the most identifiable brand we have in terms of racing and motorsports. So we've made it known that we'd like to see Mustang in NASCAR. We're going to see and track how the Nationwide Series is going and how the Mustang's impacting that and how much we can bring more brand identity into these cars, and then we'll make a decision on what we're putting in Cup."(Sporting News)(1-29-2011)
  • Johnson not doing Indy 500/Coke 600 double: Although the proposal has drifted out of the public domain for several months, IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard has not stopped working on million-dollar bonuses to entice drivers to compete in both of the Memorial Day weekend races: the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600. The concept would include a $20 million bonus to the driver who wins both events in the same day, and perhaps smaller bonuses for any driver winning one race and finishing in the top five of the other. One of Bernard's dream drivers won't participate, this year or probably any year. Jimmie Johnson, the five-time reigning NASCAR champion who has never driven an Indy car, said he would decline for family reasons. Bernard is still hoping for a commitment from Kasey Kahne or Juan Pablo Montoya, but no one has suggested a deal will materialize for the 100th-anniversary 500 in May. Sam Hornish Jr. is without a Sprint Cup ride this season but has not expressed interest in returning to Indy cars.(Indianapolis Star)(1-29-2011)

Chad Knaus Playing With Fire

Posted: 30 Jan 2011 08:10 PM PST

Caught beneath all the hustle and bustle of last week’s Sprint Media Tour was a very interesting bit about Hendrick Motorsports and their pit crew situation for 2011 (see articles here and here).  Specifically, that Chad Knaus and his shop mate Steve Letarte had yet to really solidify their starting pit crew lineups for the season.  In an attempt to build depth for their over-the-wall crews, no doubt in response to last season’s debacle at Texas, Knaus and Letarte have put together the equivalent of three full crews.  Supposedly this will allow them to have capable guys available at the track in the event of injuries or performance issues.  Does this sound like trouble to anyone else?

Having backup pit crew guys is not a new phenomenon.  I actually wrote about it early last year (see post here).  There is too much at stake during these races to not have some sort of a contingency plan.  But it appears to me that Knaus and Letarte may have taken this too far.

What I see here, is two race teams with three pit crews.  And you have Knaus saying he has yet to settle on a lineup (let me remind you that the Budweiser Shootout is 11 days away).  With all the changes coming to the Cup Series this season in regards to the new fuel cans and procedures, these guys need all the time they can get to work through the difficulties of the new system.  The fact that Knaus can’t point to six guys and say “yup, that’s my pit crew” should worry 48 fans.

I also question whether having a third pit crew looking over your shoulder at all times is really good for morale.  I’m all for competition and having to earn your spot, but having another starting lineup hanging around will screw with your head.  Doing what we do can be a big head game as it is, without adding the extra pressure.

It’s also important to note that the really good pit crews are those that have had continuity, and have had ample time to work together and get to know each other.  I don’t know how you build any of that when you are constantly plugging in guys and facing the possibility of a different six every week.

I realize that I probably shouldn’t question the guy who’s been the man in charge of the team that’s won the last five straight championships.  Don’t get me wrong, I think Knaus is a really smart guy.  You don’t get to where he is unless you know a thing or two about people and race cars.  I just wonder if maybe he has over thought this situation because of his team’s issues last season.

Only time will tell if Knaus’ plan will pay dividends, but on initial inspection, I’m not sold.

THE FINAL HOUR OF THE 2011 ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA

With 23 hours logged at the 2011 Rolex 24 At Daytona it would be natural to assume the drivers would be looking to preserve their equipment in order to make it to the finish, but here at Daytona International Speedway it is the exact opposite.  With four DP cars in the hunt for victory, and only one hour left to race, anything can happen as the contenders fight through traffic in pursuit of the lead, occasionally swapping paint while doing so.  The fight intensifies as time runs out and it becomes do-or-die for the front runners.

Among the 18 DP entries, the #02 Telmex/Target BMW Riley had set the pace and led the race since 12:50 pm.  Giving chase was the #9 Action Express Racing Porsche/Riley followed closely by the #01 Target/Telmex BMW Riley, with the #23 United Autosports car also in contention.

“Before I got in the car I discussed what might be our best options,” said Scott Pruett (Sacramento/Auburn, Calif.) of his last stint in the #01 car.  “We knew we had a strong car but you cannot really over think things, you just have to get in the car and go as fast as you can.  All we did as drivers is keep that car as clean as possible.  If you look at it now you will see an immaculate race car even after racing for 24 hours, that’s what it takes to win.”

“This is the big race of the year and everyone comes here to win,” said Pruett having just become a four-time Rolex 24 At Daytona winner (1994, ’07, ’08, ‘11).  “We had the lead toward the end and all we had to do is run smart.  Our car is very fast coming off a yellow-to-green flag.  I was glad that Grand-Am was able to go to green at the end.  I hate when a race finishes under yellow, it’s just a big disappointment for the fans.  I pushed as hard as I could on that last lap.  It takes a team effort and the team starts off by our boss Chip Ganassi and of course the mechanics.  There is so much effort and energy given before we even come here.  The #01 car has finished every lap at the Rolex 24 At Daytona for the last five years so that gives a true testimony for what the Ganassi organization is all about.”

Sharing the driving duty in the winning #01 car was Memo Rojas (Mexico City, Mexico), Graham Rahal (Columbus, Ohio/Indianapolis, In.) and Joey Hand (Sacramento, Calif.).  Rahal was eight years old when his father, Bobby Rahal, won the 1981 Rolex 24 At Daytona.  “I grew up looking at Dad’s Rolex and trying to imagine having one of my own.  I never imagined I would have one so soon.”

Capturing the attention of all in attendance was the remarkable come-from-behind performance in the GT Class as the #67 TRG Porsche GT3 went from starting the race in last position, to take a convincing lead in the Rolex 24 At Daytona.  The pole-winning qualifying time of driver Andy Lally (Northport, N.Y./Dacula, Ga.), which set a new lap record, had been disallowed after qualifying.  As the 24-hour endurance challenge went on, it was rumored that the clutch on the #67 car had become problematic, causing the drivers to lift a bit early going into turn one and the bus stop chicane – adding to the drama of the GT race.

“The big problem of course was the matter of losing the clutch with 17 hours to go in the race and that makes things very difficult as you can imagine,” said Lally about the problems with the #67 car.  “What it means is there cannot be any mistakes made.  If you spin out for some reason and have to be towed back to the pits you’re going to lose three or four laps and you might as well just pack it up and go home because your race is done.”

In the end, the lead was converted to a win for the team that included drivers Brendan Gaughan (Las Vegas, Nev.), Wolf Henzler (Nuertingen, Germany) and Spencer Pumpelly (Arlington, Va./Suwanee, Ga.).

“It’s an incredible thing that we did. . . to drive so many hours without incident and shifting gears without a clutch,” said Lally.  “We actually had to knock it out of gear and then match the revs of the engine with the speed that the rear tires were going in order to get the car into gear and to do that for so long is amazing.  It was pretty tricky but we all seemed to figure out how to do it.  This is absolutely the greatest feeling there is to win the Rolex 24 At Daytona.”

For many, and two in particular, the 49th edition of this classic 24-hour endurance race was a watershed event.

“It’s been my dream to be on the podium at the Rolex 24 At Daytona,” said actor Patrick Dempsey who was overwhelmed with emotion after taking the podium with a third-place finish in the GT class driving the #40 Mazda RX-8.  Dempsey was making his fourth career appearance in this edition of the legendary endurance race, having seen his previous best-finish last year with a sixth.  His post-race remarks included joking that he would be retiring from the television show Gray’s Anatomy as a result of his performance here so that he could race more frequently.  “Now there’s a headline,” he said before seriously addressing the contributions of the rest of his team.  “This is a team sport,” said Dempsey.  “We have a lot of people who made it possible for us to be here.”

“This 24-hour race went down to the green white checkered flag,” said Italian racer Max Papis who resides in Miami, Florida, after finishing third in the DP in the #9 Action Express Racing Porsche Riley.  “In my 17 years at the Rolex 24 At Daytona, I never thought I would see it.  For sure, to open the season like this…I’m enjoying a lot what we’ve done today.  To me it was one of the best races I’ve ever been part of.”

About Rolex Motorsports - Rolex’s presence in motorsports began in the 1930s with Malcolm Campbell.  While wearing a Rolex Oyster in 1935, he was the first person to drive an automobile over 300 miles per hour, setting a new land speed record.  Rolex truly solidified its position in the sport in 1959 when it began an association with the Daytona International Speedway in Florida and later became the title sponsor of its pre-eminent endurance race, the Rolex 24 At Daytona, in 1992.  It was shortly after its initial affiliation with the race track that Rolex introduced a watch designed for lovers of speed, the Cosmograph Daytona, which allowed its wearer to clock elapsed times and calculate average speeds.

Rolex is involved in sponsorships of some of the most prestigious events in the motorsport industry.  Endurance races such as the Rolex 24 At Daytona, The 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup and the Rolex Sports Car Series have been a critical piece of the Rolex portfolio.  In addition, Rolex has supported the bygone era of racing by celebrating design, speed, passion and endurance in sponsoring historic races such as the Goodwood Revival and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, as well as concours events such as The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Pebble Beach Tour D’Elegance presented by Rolex, and The Quail, a Motorsport Gathering.
