 NASCAR makes aero changes in effort to better Daytona pack racing (NASCAR Cup)
In an effort to improve its oft-criticized superspeedway performance in the Next Gen era, NASCAR is bringing an updated aerodynamic package to the upcoming regular season finale at Daytona International Speedway.
Key among the changes are a shortening of the rear spoiler from seven inches to four inches and a decrease from 510 horsepower to 465 with a reduced 27/32” tapered spacer. The first aims to reduce drag, with the latter adjusting the car for the reduced downforce. NASCAR will also implement new spoiler braces and a redesigned spoiler deflection device given the smaller spoiler size.
The changes should improve single-car run speed by roughly 3 mph while keeping the cars at a similar speed in the pack. In concept, these changes aim to allow drivers to move through the field more easily, reducing the current logjam of drafting cars and mitigating the need for intense fuel-saving to gain track position.
Teams will have to adapt to the changes on the fly. There won’t be any test session or practice during the Daytona race weekend. Assuming all goes well, the package can also be expected to run during Talladega Superspeedway’s fall Chase race.
NASCAR established a group of people to work on improvements for its superspeedway package, including team owner and driver Denny Hamlin. He joined Steve Letarte and NASCAR Event Management President John Probst to discuss the changes in a YouTube video shared on Wednesday.
 
Speedway Motorsports added to CARS Tour ownership ranks (Short Tracks)
The zMAX CARS Tour has another newcomer to its ownership ranks.
The series announced Wednesday that Speedway Motorsports has been added to the company’s ownership group, joining the Marcus Smith-led company with Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton and Justin Marks.
Speedway Motorsports is known primarily for its NASCAR endeavors and ownership of many noteworthy American racing facilities. Key among them is Charlotte Motor Speedway, which commonly fields Legends Cars - Speedway Motorsports also owns U.S. Legend Cars International - in the Summer Shootout each year.
Smith implied that the CARS Tour ownership is meant to bridge the gap between that stage and the NASCAR races the company is known for hosting.
“Since the creation of U.S. Legend Cars International in 1992, Speedway Motorsports has been committed to grassroots racing and developing the next generation of NASCAR drivers,” Smith said in a series release. “This investment with the zMAX CARS Tour is a logical next step for us to help Legend Car drivers move to late models and then to NASCAR’s national series, while continuing to maximize a fantastic marketing platform for our zMAX line of automotive additives.”
Wednesday’s announcement comes two days before the CARS Tour returns to the Speedway Motorsports-owned North Wilkesboro Speedway ahead of its points-paying return to the Cup Series season on Sunday.

Pecco Bagnaia undergoes forearm surgery during MotoGP’s summer break (MotoGP)
The two-time MotoGP champion underwent surgery at the Orthopaedic Clinic of the University Hospital in Modena, with Motorsport reporting that the procedure was meant to treat compartment syndrome. He’ll have three weeks to recover and rehabilitate his forearm amid the sport’s summer break before aiming for a competitive return at Silverstone on Aug. 7-9.
Bagnaia’s endured a mixed bag in the 2026 season to date. He’s gone winless and been generally outshined by Ducati teammate Marc Marquez, but has drawn close to a Grand Prix victory with four podiums - a mark that trails only Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi (6) and Jorge Martin (5).
The Italian currently sits eighth in the championship standings, 65 points back from Martin and 47 points below Marquez in third.

The Next Gen era’s all-star races at the track haven’t faired much different. Kyle Larson did win the first edition from 16th in 2023, but the past two races were each won from the front row.
