Dario Franchitti claimed his second IndyCar Series championship by winning the Firestone Indy 300 on Oct. 10 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Franchitti and Target Chip Ganassi Racing used fuel strategy to beat second place Ryan Briscoe of Team Penske to the finish by 4.788 seconds. Franchitti's teammate, Scott Dixon, finished third. The top three finishers were the only drivers who entered the season-ending race with a chance to win the title on the 1.5-mile oval. Franchitti finished the season with 616 points, Dixon with 605 and Briscoe with 604. It was the second consecutive title for Target Chip Ganassi Racing, as Dixon won in 2008. Franchitti won his first season championship in 2007 with Andretti Green Racing. The three title contenders led 198 of the 200 laps.
Briscoe took the lead on Lap 151, with Dixon in close pursuit, when Franchitti entered the pits for the final time on Lap 150. Briscoe and Dixon had stopped on Lap 144. Briscoe and Dixon then pulled away from Franchitti over the next 35 laps, as Briscoe led Dixon by .1850 of a second on Lap 187. Franchitti was the only other car on the lead lap, 23.8841 seconds behind Briscoe. But Briscoe and Dixon were forced to pit for fuel in the last eight laps, Dixon on Lap 192 and Briscoe on Lap 194. Franchitti was able to stretch his fuel over the last 50 laps for his fifth victory of the season, a career best. Franchitti's average speed was 201.420 mph, the second-fastest race in series history. It was the first caution-free race in series history. ...Daily Headlines
NASCAR will reduce the size of the restrictor plate and allow teams an optional change as a way to slow the cars and try to keep them from getting airborne at Talladega. Sprint Cup Series Director John Darby told me Friday at Auto Club Speedway that the restrictor plate will be reduced 1/64 of an inch. The new size will be 59/64 of an inch. Darby estimates it will shave 12 horsepower off the engines. Teams also have been given an option on side wickers, something they hadn't been allowed to use before at Talladega. Darby said that teams "will be able to add the same little side wicker to the end plate (on the rear wing) much like they do at the downforce tracks. If you look at all the cars in the garage right now on that end plate, all the way out on the back edge they've got a little half by half piece of alumnium. That's eight inches long. It helps in yaw or when the cars are turned. It kind of settles the back of the car down a little bit." ...Daily Headlines
Goodyear and potentially as many as 30 NASCAR Sprint Cup teams will head to Daytona International Speedway on Nov. 2-3, the Monday and Tuesday after Talladega, to try to figure out a tire for the 2010 Daytona 500. The test is open to all teams, and about 25-30 are expected, Stu Grant, Goodyear’s manager of worldwide racing, said Friday at Auto Club Speedway in California. Goodyear expects that some multicar organizations will only send some of their drivers and teams. Typical Goodyear tests have only four teams, but it’s hard to simulate conditions and tire wear in the draft with so few cars. ...More

Denny Hamlin, took the third car out for qualifying at Auto Club Speedway and put it on the pole for Sunday's Pepsi 500 Sprint Cup Series race. Hamlin laid down a lap of 39.158 seconds around the 2-mile track, translating to a speed of 183.870 mph. It was Hamlin's seventh pole in 145 career tries. David Reutimann will start alongside Hamlin, he turned a lap of 39.321 second for a speed of 183.108 mph. Greg Biffle will roll off in the third position and Jimmie Johnson qualified fourth. Jaun Pablo Montoya nailed down the fifth spot followed by Martin Truex Jr., rookie Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer and Mark Martin to round out the top ten. · NASCAR tweaks wave-around rule for Cup, Nationwide: NASCAR has tweaked its rule on wave-around cars under caution. The new rule now dictates that cars under penalty at the time of the caution are ineligible for the wave around. The change began last week with the Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway after a situation came up in the Nationwide Series race that was new to the double-file restart system instituted in June. In the Nationwide race, Roush Fenway Racing's Carl Edwards was penalized for speeding under green, and then the caution came out. He stayed out and didn't pit and then was among those cars on the end of the lead lap. He then got the "wave around" the caution car (along with the rest of the cars that had stayed out and were on the end of the lead lap) to get to the rear of the line of lead-lap cars. Edwards then went to the end of the line to serve his penalty. That move would not be allowed anymore. The driver would not get the wave around and would start a lap down at the rear of the field on the restart, the penalty for a driver who had a speeding penalty under green but never served it before the caution came out. The new rule in general is any driver under penalty is no longer eligible for the wave around.(SceneDaily)(10-11-2009)
· Allmendinger in a Ford at Lowe's? Sadler at 'Dega? Richard Petty Motorsports has had a Ford in its possession ready to race since after New Hampshire. It would not be a surprise if AJ Allmendinger is driving a Fusion at Lowe's Motor Speedway next weekend or the week after that. Once the #44 car flips over to Ford, it will remain a Fusion the rest of the season. In addition to Allmendinger, Elliott Sadler is expected to drive a Roush-prepared Ford with a Yates engine at Talladega. Whether or not RPM's proposed merger with Yates Racing goes through, team owner George Gillett has said his team will run Ford's next season.(FoxSports)(10-11-2009)
· New Ford engine at Talladega: Ford will delay the debut of its new Sprint Cup engine, Doug Hervey, who oversees Ford's North American racing operations, said Saturday. The engine was scheduled to have debuted next week at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Instead, Ford will debut the restrictor-plate version of the engine at Talladega in three weeks. As for the non-restrictor-plate engine, it likely will debut at Texas or Homestead.(Virginian

AND: Matt Kenseth's crew chief Drew Blickensderfer is expecting to have the new Ford FR9 engine in the #17 Fusion in two weeks at Talladega.
AND: On a related note: Blickensderfer expects to return as crew chief next season even though Kenseth failed to make the Chase for the first time since the format was introduced six years ago.(FoxSports)(10-11-2009)
· Berrier to be Burton's new crew chief? Crew chief Todd Berrier has been mentioned as a candidate to replace Scott Miller on the #31 Chevy at Richard Childress Racing. Berrier is currently crew chief for RCR's #07 team.(FoxSports)(10-11-2009)
· No NASCAR-GrandAm double-header at Indy: NASCAR's GrandAm series finally released its 2010 tour schedule, and on the Sprint Cup's Brickyard 400 weekend - July 25th is race day - the sports car series will be idle. NASCAR president Mike Helton had indicated three weeks ago, just after a GrandAm test around Indianapolis Motor Speedway's Formula One course, that a Cup-GrandAm double-header at Indy was possible. In fact the prospect of more Cup-GrandAm double-headers - such as at Daytona in July - appeared possible. The GrandAm series already runs with the NASCAR Nationwide tour at Montreal in late summer and with the Cup cars at Watkins Glen in early August.(MikeMulhern.net)(10-11-2009)
· Franchitti wins IRL title: Dario Franchitti's return to IndyCar racing couldn't have gone better. He's the IRL champion once again. Franchitti successfully emerged from one of the closest points races in series history Saturday, winning the season-ending Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in the first caution-free IRL race ever. The 2007 champion - who skipped 2008 to explore NASCAR [running the #40 for Chip Ganassi until the merger with DEI when the team closed] - held off Target Chip Ganassi teammate Scott Dixon and Penske Racing's Ryan Briscoe.(Associated Press)(10-10-2009)
· Happy Birthday, Ford Racing: Ford Racing is 108 years old today. On this date Oct. 10, 1901 Henry Ford, competing in a race as a driver for the only time, won a highly publicized and well-attended 10-mile event in Grosse Pointe, Mich. Several financial investors took note of the victory and later helped Ford start what would become Ford Motor Company in June 1903.(Ford PR)(10-10-2009)
· Waltrip wants full Nationwide schedule in 2010: Michael Waltrip told ESPN.com Saturday that his 2010 Sprint Cup schedule remains uncertain, and is contingent on sponsorship. His hope? To run the full Nationwide Series schedule. "Ideally, for me, would be to get the type of sponsor that I could run the full Nationwide [schedule]," he said. "That's what I'd love to do. Then I'm here at the races, here on Sundays, can be a team owner but still get to race."(ESPN.com)(10-10-2009)
· Goodyear says all teams can test tires at Daytona: Goodyear and potentially as many as 30 NASCAR Sprint Cup teams will head to Daytona International Speedway on Nov. 2-3, the Monday and Tuesday after Talladega, to try to figure out a tire for the 2010 Daytona 500. The test is open to all teams, and about 25-30 are expected, Stu Grant, Goodyear's manager of worldwide racing, said Friday at Auto Club Speedway in California. Goodyear expects that some multicar organizations will only send some of their drivers and teams. Typical Goodyear tests have only four teams, but it's hard to simulate conditions and tire wear in the draft with so few cars. It will be the only chance Sprint Cup teams will have to run at Daytona prior to February as NASCAR has extended its moratorium on testing at tracks in its three national series through 2010.(SceneDaily)(

Joe Nemechek Fans Show Their Support with FOB Campaign
October 10, 2009 - What do you think of when you hear the name Joe Nemechek? Passionate, giving, caring, supportive, hardworking, dedicated, and selfless are just a few adjectives that fans think of right away. Nemechek has been in NASCAR since 1989 and has proven to be a respectable driver on and off the track. He is a Nationwide Series champion, a winner of the Most Popular Driver award, a Rookie of the Year winner, a qualifying expert and a four time winner in the Sprint Cup Series.
Nemechek has been a great advocate for supporting the US troops and has truly set an example for all to follow. He has driven for multiple teams including Hendrick Motorsports, MB2, Furniture Row Racing, and even his own team. After the implosion of Ginn Racing in 2007, Nemechek was left to find his own way in the sport. Nemechek drove the #08 car owned by John Carter. This grassroots team was a perfect fit for Nemechek.
In the Michigan race of ‘07, fans showed their support and created the Fans On Board campaign. Fans came together and donated money to help support Nemechek and the team. The car also featured a FOB logo during the race.
Currently this season, Nemechek has opened his NEMCO garage again, supporting cars in both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series. He has proven that he is worthy to compete in this sport. Nemechek has qualified for all but three races (missing by .005 seconds) this season in the Sprint Cup series and has had his No. 87 Nationwide car compete in every race this season, staying in the top 30 in owner standings.
This may seem like an easy task but for a driver running on limited funds and resources, it is very commendable. He is working with very few employees and even works on the cars himself. This is a truly dedicated driver who is the epitome of what NASCAR is all about.
NASCAR is made up of caring fans who come out to support their drivers and drivers who they know have made a huge impact on the sport and even their own personal lives. This is the reason why Joe Nemechek fans are once again calling upon all fans in yet another Fans on Board campaign.
Fans of Joe from the interactive forum website, www.joenemechek.net, have organized this campaign specifically to help Nemechek run the Sprint Cup race at Talladega. So far the members of these forums have risen close to $1000 of their own money. Now they are asking all fans to show their support by donating any amount to this campaign. Joe is very appreciative of the support of his fans and is looking forward to giving them a good show at Talladega.
Fans can make a donation to the Joe Nemechek Fans on Board Campaign by the way of the internet or by mail.
To donate on the internet via PayPal, please use the following link:
https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=8762562
If you would like to donate by mail, please send donations to the following address:
Nemco Motorsports c/o Master Machine & Tool Co
PO Box 277
Mulberry, FL 33860
Please write in the memo or in the envelope, “FOB Campaign.”
Nemechek and his fans would like to thank everyone for their support of this effort

UPDATE: NASCAR officials pulled Joey Logano's father's credential after he confronted Greg Biffle on Saturday following the Nationwide Series race. A NASCAR spokesman said Tom Logano walked up to Biffle's car on pit road and had a verbal altercation
with the driver. Biffle and Joey Logano tangled earlier in the race, with Biffle putting Logano's #20 Toyota into the wall, a move Biffle hinted at over the radio beforehand. Joey Logano came back to win the race while Biffle finished 14th.Joe Gibbs Racing president J.D. Gibbs said he had no immediate knowledge of the event. He'll return to the wheel of MRW's #99 Camry in Texas and Phoenix next month. But with guidance from former NASCAR team owner Gary Bechtel, it's a pretty good bet that Bayne will wind up in a competitive ride on a full-time basis in the Nationwide Series in 2010. "Anything's a possibility right now," said Bayne, when asked if he'll wind up in the #11 or No. 99 next season. · NASCAR Announces Plans for COT: NASCAR announced its plans for the introduction of the new car in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. The new car will compete in four points races during the 2010 season beginning with the July 2 race at Daytona International Speedway followed by the Aug. 14 event at Michigan International Speedway, the Sept. 10 race at Richmond International Raceway and at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Oct. 15. Full integration of the new car into the NASCAR Nationwide schedule is targeted for the 2011 season. The 2010 roll-out schedule follows a meeting in late July with series team owners and crew chiefs with NASCAR officials at the Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C. "There was a lot of good dialogue shared with the teams during that meeting," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR's vice president of competition. "We've taken the time to review the information that was shared in the meeting and develop a schedule that we believe will provide the teams with the best possible opportunity to prepare for the rollout of the new car. "This four-race schedule gives the teams experience on a wide variety of ovals, in addition to a superspeedway." "This is another major step as we continue to give the series a unique look and enhance the competitive racing we already have on the track," said Joe Balash, NASCAR Nationwide Series director.(NASCAR PR)(10-9-2009)

Busch had been battling the flu this week, so fellow JGR driver, Denny Hamlin was on standby to step in if needed. Logano jumped to the lead on the green flag, but would only hold it for one lap, as Busch took over, maintaining the lead until lap 37 when Hamlin took over for the ailing Busch. Logano took the lead, and held it until lap 50, when #16 Biffle went to the front, Brian Vickers passed Biffle on lap 61, and stayed there until lap 72 brought out another debris yellow. Clay Rogers Wins Rockingham, WIX Challenge Award; Resumes Point Lead
October 10th, 2009
Rockingham, N.C. (October 10, 2009) – Clay Rogers dominated Saturday’s Aaron’s 150 presented by Black’s Tire and Auto Service at Rockingham Speedway to walk off with the largest payday this season in the USARacing Pro Cup Series and regain the lead in the Championship Series point standings with one race remaining.
Rogers received the $15,000 WIX Challenge Award for earning the pole for the event and then winning the race, his fifth victory this season. That coupled with the $8,000 that goes to the winner and contingency money, brought his winnings to $24,017.
“I’ve been fortunate over the years to win a lot of money in this series when they have little bonus programs like that,” Rogers said after collecting the WIX Challenge Award that’s worth $5,000 per race. “The bonus money is (now) back to $5,000, so we’ll just try and go get that.
With Rogers’ 22nd career victory, he became the only two-time winner in this season’s four-race Championship Series. Rogers won the Sept. 5 Concord, N.C., race, which opened the title bout. For his Rockingham victory, Rogers turned to “Old Faithful”, an engine that’s carried him to four of his five victories this year.
“For sure that was a tough call,” Rogers said about the C&C Boiler Sales & Service team’s decision to change engines during Friday’s final practice session. “We kinda felt like something was just a little bit off in the motor we started with. It turned out to be the right decision. I mean, it wasn’t anything catastrophic. We didn’t blow up. Just something was a little off somewhere and I’m just glad we put ‘Old Faithful’ in. I guess when you don’t know what to do you go to your ‘Big Batter.’ That’s our ‘Big Batter’ motor there, ‘Old Faithful.’”
Rogers led twice for 108 laps in the 150-lap event that was slowed by seven caution flags for 51 laps on the 1-mile track.
With the victory, Rogers regained the point lead he lost to Drew Herring at Iowa Speedway last month. Entering Saturday’s race Herring possessed a two-point advantage over Rogers. However, an accident in turn one on lap 13 that involved Dana White and Herring dropped the Benson, N.C., resident to third in the standings, 85 points behind Rogers.
“At the beginning of the race, I tried my best to get around Clay (Rogers) on the outside,” Herring said. “When I couldn’t do it, I got in line behind him and was running him down. The car was really fast on the bottom.
“A few laps into the run the motor missed and we came in to see if we could fix it and we couldn’t. We went back out into turn one, a car spun in front of me. I tried everything I could to avoid it, but it came back down and clipped me.”
The accident occurred on the restart following the first caution period that consumed laps 5-11.
Rogers jumped into the lead when the race started and maintained the top position until lap 60 when he pitted for service during the race’s fourth caution flag. That turned the lead over to Bryce Walker, who held it for five laps before relinquishing it to 15-year-old Logan Ruffin, of Brentwood, Tenn. In only his second USAR Pro Cup start, Ruffin maintained the advantage for 11 laps and picked up five bonus points for leading at the halfway point.
Ruffin battled Mike Garvey briefly before relinquishing the lead to him on the frontstretch on lap 77. When the fifth caution flag waved, Garvey and Ruffin both pitted for fuel and Shane Hall inherited the lead. Hall held the No. 1 position through the remainder of the 14-lap caution. When the race restarted on lap 101, Hall kept the lead for only two laps before Rogers sailed past him on lap 103 and into the lead for good.
It appeared Bobby Gill might have a shot to challenge Rogers for the lead in the closing laps after the final caution flag waved for debris in the first and second turns with eight laps remaining. The race restarted with four laps to go, but Gill’s USG Sheetrock/Building Specialties Ford Fusion was no match for Rogers Chevrolet, as he pulled away to a 1.108-second victory.
“They let me know Bob (Gill) was coming and they were keeping me posted on how far back he was, what his lap times were,” Rogers said after collecting his second straight victory at the historic track. “He was actually running a little bit quicker than we were at one point, but we took a couple of laps there to pick up the pace and we were able to match or maybe beat him by a tenth, based on lap times.
“Our car was really good on cold tires and being out front in clean air and having a wide-open race track on restarts is the place you want to be anyway. Bobby, you never know with him; he’s sly on those restarts. He’s been famous for making things happen on restarts for years. I felt like if we could beat him in turn one, we’d be all right. Luckily, we were able to do that.”
Gill admitted he was pleased with his first second-place finish this year.
“Last year, we went out here and blew a motor and this year we finished second,” Gill noted. “I’d just like to thank all the guys. We’ve been struggling all year.”
John Gibson also was happy with his third-place finish in his MitiGator Ford Fusion.
“This has been a long time coming, honestly,” Gibson said about only his second top-5 this season. “We’ve run better than what our results have shown for the past two years, but no one hears those stories. They don’t hear about the blown tires and they don’t hear about the constant struggles you have when you’re a low-budget team like ourselves. The way things have been going here, I wish we had seven more races.”
The USAR Pro Cup Series 2009 season ends Oct. 31 at South Boston, Va. Rogers takes a 43-point lead over J.P. Morgan into the season finale. Morgan took over second with his fourth-place finish at Rockingham.
