Alex Bowman cleared for Cup return at Bristol Motor Speedway (NASCAR Cup)
Alex Bowman will be back in action this weekend at the Last Great Coliseum.
Hendrick Motorsports announced Thursday that Bowman will return to the NASCAR Cup Series for Sunday’s Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. The comeback follows a four-race absence as Bowman deal with symptoms of vertigo that led him to exit the car early in his last appearance at Circuit of the Americas on March 1.
“I’m grateful for the support I’ve had from Hendrick Motorsports, my sponsor Ally, our fans, and the medical team throughout the process,” Bowman said in a team statement. “It’s been tough being out of the car, but we all wanted to make sure I was 100% ready before returning. I feel really good, and I’m excited about being at the track with my team and getting back to racing.”
Bowman drove a road car around the Ten Tenths Motor Club near Charlotte Motor Speedway and participated in a medical evaluation, pit stop practice and simulator testing before being cleared to return to action. He comes back with no restrictions.
The Arizona native will come back to a difficult task if he hopes to make the 2026 Cup Series playoffs. Bowman had an average finish of 33rd in the year’s tricky opening three races, leaving him 36th in points before his hiatus was confirmed. He holds the same points position now, but sits 35 points behind 35th-place Cody Ware and 144 points below the current playoff cutline with 19 races remaining in the regular season.
Hendrick Motorsports had previously indicated that it would request a playoff eligibility waiver when Bowman returns. He’ll need that and to make up roughly 7.57 points per race on the cutline if he hopes to salvage a playoff bid with the return of the Chase.
Things aren’t much better on the owners point side, either. Anthony Alfredo filled Bowman’s No. 48 for one race and Justin Allgaier ran the other three he missed, but the duo amassed just 44 points (11 per race) in Bowman’s absence, leaving the No. 48 team 34th in the standings with 100 points to make up on 16th.
But the important thing is that Bowman is healthy and took the time he needed for a proper recovery.
“We’re proud of Alex and the way he’s handled this situation,” Jeff Andrews, president and general manager of Hendrick Motorsports, said of Bowman. “He’s put a lot of work into his recovery and followed the medical team’s plan every step of the way.
“From the outset, our goal was to prioritize his health and have him return when he was fully recovered and medically cleared. We’re looking forward to seeing Alex back in his race car this weekend.”
 
 Formula 2 planning North American swing; Herta ruled out for Indy 500 (F2/IndyCar)
With its planned trips to the Middle East now untenable amid the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran, Formula 2 is planning a North American tour through Miami and Montreal.
It’s a move that’ll help the series keep its planned total number of rounds, but it comes with unfortunate repercussions for one of the tour’s most noteworthy drivers.
Formula 2 is joining the support bill for the Miami and Montreal Grands Prix in May, filling the loss of two rounds from its 14-round schedule with the removal of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
“I would like to thank Stefano Domenicali and Formula 1 for their support in making this possible, and also the FIA, the promoters of the Miami and Canadian Grands Prix, and of course my team, who have worked hard to put in place two new Rounds in such a short amount of time,” FIA Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel said in a series statement. “It was not an easy thing to do, but bringing F2 to North America for the first time is really fantastic.”
The move will bring Colton Herta back to America for a stint, but does so at the cost of his planned run in the Indianapolis 500. Herta was planning to contest the Greatest Spectacle in Racing in a one-off NTT IndyCar Series return with Andretti Global, but will now have to miss the race due to a date clash with the F2 race in Montreal.
Herta jumped ship for F2 this year in an attempt to score the necessary superlicense points to chase a Formula 1 dream with Cadillac F1. He currently sits 10th in the series standings after a challenging opening weekend in Australia.
The Californian was planning to join Will Power, Marcus Ericsson and Kyle Kirkwood in chasing an Indy 500 win for Andretti Global. But in his absence, Associated Press reporter Jenna Fryer shared that the team is planning to stick with its three full-time entrants, removing the planned fourth car from the Indy 500 grid.
That’ll shorten an already-small Indy 500 grid, potentially leaving IndyCar to work with exiting newcomers PREMA or AJ Foyt Racing if it hopes to see a full field of 33 when the Indy 500 goes green.

Red Bull set for another big exit as GianPiero Lambiase plans McLaren move (F1)
Lambiase has gained fame with his ties to Max Verstappen while serving as Red Bull’s head of race engineering. RACER’s Chris Medland reported that he’s long been a target of McLaren Racing leaders Zak Brown and Andrea Stella.

RACER understands Lambiase will join McLaren in a role that will feature a number of responsibilities that are currently carried out by Stella, with the current team principal having been instrumental in his recruitment. It is understood that the addition of Lambiase is viewed as a strengthening of McLaren’s structure as it looks to build on its recent success, and reports that Stella is lined up for a move to Ferrari are wide of the mark.
Red Bull confirmed the news later on Thursday, stating Lambiase will continue as Verstappen’s engineer until his departure.
“Oracle Red Bull Racing confirms that GianPiero Lambiase will leave the team in 2028, when his current contract expires,” Red Bull said in a statement. “’GP’ is a valued member of the team, which he joined in 2015. Until his planned departure, GP continues in his roles as Head of Racing and as Race Engineer to Max Verstappen.
“The team and he are fully committed to add more success to our strong track record together.”
Given Formula 1’s lengthy gardening leave requirements - a relevant topic in NASCAR spaces given the current lawsuit and discussion surrounding Chris Gabehart’s move to Spire Motorsports - Lambiase is slated to join McLaren no later than 2028.
His exit will be the latest in a string of high-profile departures in recent years from Red Bull, including former team principal Christian Horner, technical officer Adrian Newey, motorsport advisor Helmut Marko and Jonathan Wheatley, who has since also left Audi’s team principal position ahead of a rumored switch to Aston Martin.
The move will add additional pressure to Red Bull at a time when its star driver, Max Verstappen, is openly contemplating retirement from F1 amid deep dissatisfaction with the ruleset implemented for the 2026 season.
