Alex Zanardi passes away aged 59 (F1/IndyCar/Sports Cars)
Former open wheel standout-turned Paralympic gold medalist Alex Zanardi passed away over the weekend. He was 59.
A statement from the Zanardi family read:
“It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Alessandro Zanardi, which occurred suddenly yesterday evening, May 1.
“Alex died peacefully, surrounded by the affection of those closest to him.”
The Italian emerged as one of modern motorsports’ most unique stars, competing in Formula 1 from 1991 through 1994 and again for a final year in 1999 after securing a pair of CART titles. But his most famous moment came in a life-altering crash at Germany’s
Lausitzring as part of a CART FedEx Championship Series race in 2001. He lost both legs and nearly bled out in the crash, saved only by the rapid medical treatment offered on the day.
For many, that would’ve been a defining life moment proceeded by steady decline. But Zanardi found a way to re-emerge in a different realm of competition, taking up paracycling and ultimately claiming four gold medals and a pair of silver medals between the
2012 and 2016 Paralympics.
Zanardi also found ways to return to the cockpit, making 13 laps at speed in a Reynard Indy car fitted with hand controls as the same Lausitzring in 2003. He followed that up with a short career in sports cars, claiming four wins in the World Touring Car Championship
between 2005 and 2009.
He made one final sports car start in the 2019 Rolex 24 Daytona, competing in a BMW M8 GTE machine. Zanardi sustained serious head injuries after being struck by a truck in a 2020 charity paracycling relay in Tuscany and spent the remainder of his life out
of the public eye while undergoing treatment.
Tributes to Zanardi poured in around the world in the hours after his passing was announced, with everyone from Italy’s prime minister, Giorgio Meloni, to Italian soccer clubs and the various racing series he competed in sending their condolences.
It took horrible circumstances to make it happen, but Zanardi became a true inspiration for many around the world through his unique comeback and the way he stayed true to himself along the way. There’ll never be another story quite like his.
