Hamlin Wins 17th Race Of His Career
For the first time this season -- at a track where he was expected to contend -- Denny Hamlin finally dodged the pitfalls that have plagued him in previous races and closed the deal. First out of the pits after a stop under caution on Lap 192 of 200, Hamlin held off Matt Kenseth after a restart with five laps left and claimed his first victory of the season in Sunday’s Heluva Good 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Hamlin, who won his 17th Sprint Cup race, crossed the finish line .281 seconds ahead of Kenseth. Unlike previous races at his best tracks, such as Martinsville, Richmond and Pocono -- where Hamlin was strong early but succumbed to a variety late-race problems -- Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota was at its best in the closing laps of Sunday’s race. “We finished -- that’s the thing,” Hamlin said in victory lane. “We got it done. Everyone knows that we’ve been strong.
Today we didn’t look as strong as what we normally do here, but we got it working there at the end. We made a magic adjustment, and the car took off. This is the point of the season where we really need to start hitting our stride, and hopefully we’ve got another good 10 weeks before the Chase starts.”
Kyle Busch, Hamlin’s teammate at Joe Gibbs Racing, finished third for the second week in a row. Paul Menard came home fourth for his best result of the season, and Carl Edwards finished fifth and expanded his lead in the series standings to 20 points over second-place Kevin Harvick (14th Sunday). Ryan Newman, Tony Stewart, Clint Bowyer, Mark Martin and Brian Vickers completed the top 10. Kenseth spun his tires on the final restart but got a push from Edwards, his Roush Fenway Racing teammate, and closed on Hamlin over the final five laps -- but ran out of time. “I got a bad restart, and Carl pushed me back to clean air, which was real nice of him, and I got back to Denny, but I couldn’t get around him,” Kenseth said. “We were kind of slow for about 10 laps on most runs, and then it seemed like we were the best car from 10 (laps) until we needed fuel. I just didn’t have
enough time to get around him. I tried everything I could, and I just couldn’t figure out how to do it.”
The victory and third-place finish for the Gibbs cars were a welcome change from the start of the weekend. On Friday, NASCAR ordered all three JGR teams to replace oil pans that had not been submitted for approval. (JGR’s third driver, Joey Logano, finished 18th.) NASCAR is pondering sanctions for the unapproved parts, with an announcement expected early in the week. Hamlin cracked the top 10 in the Cup standings for the first time since the third week of the season at Las Vegas. The runner-up to Jimmie Johnson in last year’s Chase, Hamlin is ninth, 77 points behind Edwards with 11 races left before the field for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup is set. Hamlin got the opportunity he needed when a caution on Lap 158 -- the result of an accident involving Juan Pablo Montoya and Andy Lally in Turn 4 -- interrupted a cycle of green-flag pit stops and scrambled the running order for a
restart on Lap 164. Edwards passed Kenseth and Busch for the lead on the restart lap, with Hamlin in pursuit. With the top-10 drivers in fuel-saving mode, Edwards continued to pace the field, pulling away from Hamlin by a second and a half, before contact from Hendrick Motorsports teammate Mark Martin sent Dale Earnhardt Jr. into the Turn 1 wall to bring out the final caution.
On Lap 192, when the lead-lap cars came to the pits -- most for two tires and fuel -- Hamlin’s crew executed its best stop when it counted most. Johnson continued to have problems with Michigan, one of four active Cup tracks where the five-time defending champion hasn’t won a race. Johnson spun off Turn 2 just eight laps into the race, flattened three of his four tires and broke the sway bar on the No. 48 Chevrolet. Ultimately, Johnson lost two laps as his crew repaired the car. He salvaged a 27th-place finish but lost most of the ground in the standings he had gained on Edwards last week at Pocono. Johnson fell from second, six points back, to fifth, 29 points in arrears. (Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service)
How Will NASCAR Handle Gibbs Racing Penalty?
Will Joe Gibbs Racing get its second straight points penalty, or will NASCAR issue a slap on the wrist for the unapproved oil pans found on all three Gibbs Sprint Cup cars during opening-day inspection Friday at Michigan International Speedway? On Monday, NASCAR docked Kyle Busch and Joe Gibbs each six driver and owner points, respectively, and fined crew chief Dave Rogers $25,000 when Busch’s third-place car measured too low in the left front during postrace inspection last Sunday at Pocono. On Friday, Cup series director John Darby told the Gibbs teams, which had not submitted the oil pans for approval before mounting them on their engines, to replace the offending oil pans with approved parts before Friday’s first practice. The teams complied, and the unapproved oil pans, which at 25-30 pounds were significantly heavier than those commonly in use, sat on display in the NASCAR
hauler for other organizations to inspect. One important note: There are no weight restrictions on oil pans in the NASCAR rulebook, but NASCAR reserves the right to reject parts it finds questionable.
Because the oil pans never saw competition, NASCAR seems inclined to treat the offense as a simple failure to submit a part for approval. It’s clear, however, that a heavier oil pan can provide a performance advantage by lowering the center of gravity and helping a car turn through the corners. NASCAR should be wary of hanging its hat on the fact the oil pans were never used on-track, as Jeff Gordon pointed out Friday afternoon on his Twitter account. “All I’m going to say about Gibbs cars oil pan is that we had 100-point penalty for a flared left front fender that never went on track,” Gordon wrote. --/-- The reference was to the 2007 penalties Gordon’s and Jimmie Johnson’s teams drew for body infractions at Sonoma—penalties that included $100,000 fines and six-week suspensions to their respective crew chiefs, Steve Letarte and Chad Knaus. Against that backdrop, the Cup
garage is waiting attentively for the disposition of the oil pan issue. (Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service)
Pit Crew Still An Open Question For Johnson
On a given Monday, Jimmie Johnson doesn’t know which crew members will pit his car the following Sunday—but that’s by design. Despite winning their fifth straight Sprint Cup championship last year, Johnson and crew chief Chad Knaus felt there was room for improvement in the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports team. The pit crew was one of the areas that needed a fresh approach. In fact, issues on pit road at Texas last fall proved the final straw for Knaus, who borrowed Jeff Gordon’s over-the-wall crew for the rest of the Chase, which Johnson ultimately won. During the offseason, Knaus held a minicamp for prospective crew members, and competition for starting spots on Sunday has continued throughout the season. “The situation Chad created is that he’s really trying not to have a first string, second string,” Johnson told Sporting News Friday at Michigan International Speedway.
“You earn your position during the week in practices and prove that you’re the fastest guy that week and can do the best job that week going over the wall. I know every guy on the team; I train with them now and am in there on Tuesday’s working out with them so that we can form a tighter bond together. I see a lot of good things happening, and I know that they’re working very hard for that coveted position to go over the wall and change or carry (tires) or jack the car.” (Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service)

Edwards Celebrates Win In Victory Lane
When Carl Edwards saw the Ford of Roush Fenway Racing teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. blow by him with 21 laps left in Saturday’s Alliance Truck Parts 250 at Michigan International Speedway, he was worried. Just as crew chief Mike Beam predicted he would, however, Edwards caught Stenhouse in the closing laps, passed his teammate on Lap 117 of 125 and pulled away to win his fourth NASCAR Nationwide Series race of the season and the 33rd of his career. “Ricky drove his heart out -- that guy is unbelievable,” Edwards said in victory lane. “I didn’t think I was going to be able to get him, but it was like his car got tightened up. Man, he did a good job. … I thought Ricky was setting sail. I didn’t think I was going to be able to catch him. His car, I don’t think, was balanced as well as mine was, and he was somehow making it go that fast. So he’s someone I’m a little
nervous about for the future.”
Stenhouse held on to second place, crossing the finish line 1.669 seconds behind Edwards, and took the lead in the series standings by two points over eighth-place finisher Elliott Sadler. Kyle Busch won a heated battle against polesitter Paul Menard for the third position, with Menard rolling across the stripe in fourth and Trevor Bayne fifth. To Stenhouse, whose car picked up a push after about 15 green-flag laps, the race was instructive. Going forward, Stenhouse plans to place more emphasis on practice. “We’re right there where we need to be -- we’ve just got to cap it off,” said Stenhouse, 23, who picked up his first Nationwide win last month at Iowa. “We’ve got to get a little bit better. I think Carl’s a little bit better at practice, getting his car where it needs to be. It takes us a little bit to get it going throughout the race, so we’re going to have to work
on that. I think that’s something I’m going to have to do. It’s frustrating running second, but to have Ford running 1-2 up here in Michigan is a good deal for us.”
Edwards had stretched his lead to one second over Stenhouse when NASCAR called a caution on Lap 93 after Aric Almirola spun in Turn 2. Mark Martin, however, was on pit road when the caution flag came out and inherited the top spot when the rest of the lead-lap cars came to the pits under caution. After the restart on Lap 101, Edwards quickly dispatched Martin, with Busch following into second position. But Stenhouse soon grabbed second from Busch and quickly tracked down Edwards, passing him for the lead on Lap 104. (Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service)
Ty Dillon Wins Michigan ARCA Race
Ty Dillon took advantage of a late-race wreck by leader Cale Gale with six laps remaining, and brushed leader Max Gresham aside with one lap to go and posted his fourth victory of the season in the RainEater Wiper Blades 200 on Friday at Michigan International Speedway. Gale, who had led a total of 72 laps in the 100-lap event, was the victim of a blown right tire that sent him into the wall, giving the lead to Gresham on a green-white, one-lap restart. But Dillon jumped Gresham for the lead just after the start-finish line on the wild last lap and held off Gresham for the victory and a commanding lead in the ARCA driver points standings. “I thought for sure we had Ty on the restart on the last lap but we just got outdone a little,” Gresham said. “Ty beat me to the corner. If I would have had one more lap I might have gotten back in front but I just ran out of time. He just had a
little bit more power than we had and you can’t beat power.”
Dillon, driving the Richard Childress Racing Development Chevrolet, now holds a 210-point advantage over veteran Frank Kimmel, who finished ninth. Dillon, 19, knew he had his work cut out with Gale clearly the class of the field before Gale’s tire flattened after traveling over debris on the track. -- “I just tried to save my stuff and do what I could as the No. 25 (Gresham) kept coming,” Dillon said. “It seems ARCA races seem to have a lot of cautions at the end so I just tried to stay patient.” -- Dillon, who graduated from high school just two weeks ago, is the grandson of long-time NASCAR Sprint Cup team owner Childress. Gale started from the pole after setting an ARCA record-qualifying speed of 189.623 miles per hour this morning and led the field by as much as five seconds on occasion, but a total of seven caution periods kept him somewhat at bay until his tire tragedy.
“It’s just racing,” he said following his 19th place finish. “It seems like 2011 has just been bad luck for me for whatever reason,” added Gale, who was coached over the radio throughout the race by Sprint Cup driver Kevin Harvick, who drives for Childress. Tim George finished third followed by Chad Hackenbracht and Chris Buescher.
Michigan Speedway Will Repave Track
When NASCAR comes to Michigan International Speedway next year, the track will sport a completely repaved racing surface, if the project announced Friday goes according to plan. Michigan will begin the fourth repaving in the history of the two-mile track with the resurfacing of pit road immediately after Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series race. The project does not include any reconfiguring of the racetrack, speedway officials said. Repaving of the racing surface itself will begin after the Aug. 21 Sprint Cup race. The project is scheduled for completion before the NASCAR’s top three divisions return to Michigan next year.
Most drivers were wary about the repaving, because most think the nature of racing is likely to change. Michigan is known for its wide racing surface and use of multiple grooves, and that aspect could be diminished with new asphalt. “Just like every other racetrack, it will change the grip and the tire combination, which will have an effect on the racing,” Ryan Newman said. “I don’t think we’ve ever gone to a newly surfaced racetrack and run three-wide or had three grooves to work with, so it changes the characteristics of the racing. In saying that, it’s something that has to be done for the future of our sport from a safety standpoint. … As a driver, I should say, I never like to see them paved. I love them when they’re old and have character and they’re lacking grip, and we can take a tire there that’s pretty grippy and falls off and that is a good combination for
us as drivers, especially for the racing and for the fans.”
Dale Earnhardt Jr., whose last Cup win came at Michigan in June 2008, was more succinct in his assessment of the project, which will cost an estimated $7 million. “The track’s awesome,” Earnhardt said. “I don’t know why it needs new asphalt. They ought to send that asphalt over to Pocono.” (Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service)

- Gibbs courting Edwards? UPDATE: am hearing that Carl Edwards, currently the driver of the #99 Roush Fenway Racing Ford, is being courted by Joe Gibbs Racing to take over the #20 Home Depot Toyota ride. Where would that leave current #20 driver, Joey Logano, to the long rumored 4th Joe Gibbs car, no word on who would be the sponsor, if it happens.(6-17-2011)
UPDATE: Ford and Roush Fenway Racing are feeling a sense of urgency to re-sign Carl Edwards. For the last month, Edwards has been rumored to be headed to Joe Gibbs Racing. Earlier this season, JGR president J.D. Gibbs acknowledged that the organization would be interested in talking to Edwards if sponsorship could be acquired for a fourth team. Roush Fenway Racing president Steve Newman called the Edwards' negotiation "a slow and steady process."
Both Roush and Ford have worked diligently to entice Edwards to remain in the blue-oval camp but are starting to feel the pressure from Toyota. "We have constant conversations with Carl," Newmark said. "I still remain cautiously optimistic that we'll get something done, but as we've talked about before, the process that we're going through, we want to make sure that we have everything in order going forward and Carl's main focus is on making sure he's going to a place where he can win championships. Newmark understands that Edwards is shopping the market and "has no issue with him engaging in discussions." Now the challenge for Roush comes in offering the most competitive package for Edwards and his future. At the same time, Newmark has the challenge of locking up Roush sponsors Aflac, UPS and Crown Royal. Newmark locked down both 3M and Greg Biffle for a multi-year deal in April. Newmark is not actively seeking a replacement for Edwards -- yet. With
Trevor Bayne and Ricky Stenhouse in the pipeline, there's really no need to.(Fox Sports)(6-19-2011)

The driver/owner had hoped to field two cars at the road course at Infineon - one for him and another for Raikkonen, the 2007 Formula One champion. Raikkonen wrecked Gordon's main road-course car at a test last month. Gordon just finished getting that car repaired and he and Raikkonen couldn't work out a deal for the Finnish driver to make his Cup debut for Robby Gordon Motorsports. Gordon, who has had to start and
park his car at times this year due to lack of sponsorship, will attempt to run the entire race at Michigan and Infineon. His next race likely will be Indianapolis in late July. He also has planned to run the Nationwide race at Montreal in August. He said he might run two cars in some weeks for additional testing. Gordon is now buying engines and using his own shop to rebuild and maintain them. He was leasing engines from Penske Motorsports.(Scene Daily)(6-19-2011)
- Roush supportive of Childress: Jack Roush drew a few laughs after his team's NASCAR Nationwide victory, when he was asked his view of the fine handed down to fellow owner Richard Childress. Childress was fined $150,000 earlier this month for an altercation with Kyle Busch at Kansas Speedway. Childress was upset that Busch bumped into Joey Coulter on the cool-down lap after a race. "It was pretty high," Roush said about the fine. "I guess that pretty much puts the nail in the coffin of, 'Have at it, guys.' Maybe that was a boy and a man. I am not sure. Maybe that is different than the boys having at it. Kyle has been pretty rough on my cars over a period of time and for Richard to stand up for himself was OK," Roush said.(Associated Press)(6-19-2011)
- JGR teams face penalties for oil pans: UPDATE: The Joe Gibbs Racing teams of #18-Kyle Busch, #11-Denny Hamlin and #20-Joey Logano all face possible penalties after an issue was discovered in inspection Friday morning at Michigan before practice began. John Darby, Cup series director, said that all three Gibbs cars had oil pans that had not been submitted for approval before competition. "We had them pull (those) off and put what we're accustomed to, what has been submitted back on their cars,'' Darby said. All three teams face possible penalties for the infraction. "Chances are great (a penalty) wouldn't involve points,'' Darby said.(Hampton Roads)(6-17-2011)
UPDATE: Joe Gibbs Racing had unapproved- and unusually heavy - oil pans seized from its three NASCAR Sprint Cup cars Friday morning at Michigan International Speedway. Officially, the issue was that the oil pans had not been submitted for approval by NASCAR, a standard procedure for the thousands of parts and pieces on race cars. But a bigger issue ultimately might be weight. While a standard NASCAR Sprint Cup oil pan weighs about 4 pounds, the three taken off the Gibbs cars weighed an estimated 20-30 pounds apiece. Competitors contacted by SPEED.com and FOXSports.com said the heavy oil pans would allow the teams to remove weight elsewhere in the car and put it low and on the front of the car, which could provide a handling advantage, perhaps a substantial one. Officials did not penalize JGR at the track but said in a statement, "NASCAR will discuss early next week if there will be any additional penalties assessed to
these three teams."(SPEED)(6-18-2011)

FROM TRAGEDY GROWS TRIUMPH: HOW ONE LOCAL FAMILY FINDS STRENGTH IN THE DEATH OF THEIR DAUGHTER
Baby Siena Gave up Everything to Save her Sister’s Life
Sacramento, California, June 17, 2011 – NASCAR racer Dave Smith and his wife Dorine were excited, and a bit nervous, to welcome identical twin girls. Half-way through a healthy pregnancy, Dorine discovered that one of her daughters was in trouble. On the evening of October 24, 2010, more than 4 months before her due date, Dorine gave birth to Siena and Adrianna at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento.
Siena and Adrianna were born 14 weeks premature, and suffered from a rare condition called Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS). This condition caused one child to receive more blood and nutrients than needed, while the other received less. In this case, Siena was the baby to receive less blood.
Though Siena and Adrianna had been born sick and premature, doctors had seen no indication of the severity of the girl’s health until Dorine went into early labor.
“I prided myself in obtaining the best of pre-natal care. I received ultrasounds twice a week, had genetic testing, an amniocentesis and constant support from a great group of Sutter OBGYNs. Everything was going great until one day I went into pre-term labor,” said Dorine.
Upon delivery, Dorine had been allowed mere seconds to gaze at her beautiful baby girls before they had been whisked away to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Sutter Memorial Hospital. From that point on it was a constant struggle for survival. Both babies were born weighing just over 1 pound, and both babies’ skin had been transparent and underdeveloped. The only contact that the Smiths had with their daughters was through the Plexiglas walls of their incubators.
On her second day of life, Adrianna required surgery that would allow her to accept the necessary nutrients she needed to survive. However, on that same day, Siena took a turn for the worst. She suffered a massive hemorrhage in her brain and was not strong enough to endure it. The doctors prepared the Smiths to tell their baby girl goodbye.
“Siena had given her all for her sister, her blood, her nutrients, her strength and now her life. Late that night, we visited Adrianna and told her that Siena had passed away and was now her angel in Heaven. Her tiny hand squeezed my finger hard, as if to say, “Don’t worry Mommy, I’m tough enough to get through this,”’ said Dorine.
And that is what she did. On January 11, 2011 the Smiths were finally able to bring their baby home.
Adrianna, now seven months old, is a healthy and beautiful baby girl. The Smiths will always remember their daughter Siena, and the sacrifice she gave to save her sister; and they know that it was the result of the lifesaving research and support of the March of Dimes that the doctors of Sutter Memorial Hospital were able to save Adrianna.
It is because of the success and necessity of the March of Dimes that the Smith family has decided to give back to their community through this year’s upcoming Be A Hero for Babies Day, an event created by Farmers Insurance to help March of Dimes fund lifesaving research, education and advocacy.
From now until June 29, 2011 the Smiths will be personally fundraising to support the March of Dimes. SNT Motorsports Development Corp will also be donating 15 percent of their NASCAR sponsorship dollars to the March of Dimes to help end premature births and infant mortality.
The NASCAR race featuring this Red Line Oil, Sport Truck RV, Muscle Milk, Byers Leaf Guard, Porter Communications, Freightliner, Red Rocket Auto Tech and Porter Law Group supported car will be held on June 25, 2011 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, and a pair of angel wings will be painted on the race car in memory of Siena.

· Penske looking for sponsor for Hornish: From a Dodge PR:
YOUR TEAM OWNER ROGER PENSKE SAID HE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU BACK HERE FULL-TIME; WHAT DOES THIS DO TOWARD THAT IN 2012?
Hornish: "We're working really hard to be back full-time. I like the Nationwide Series. I like the way the cars run and race. It's a lot of fun. I wouldn't have any qualms about being here full-time. We're working hard to get what we can get and be able to do those things. We have some great sponsors that have stuck with us and are working hard
to be able to get where we need to be. We're just doing the best job we can for them."(Darnell Communications/ Dodge)(6-18-2011)
· Dufault working on deal for Montreal race: Right now there is a big blank space on Maryeve Dufault's 2011 race calendar where the NASCAR Nationwide Series NAPA 200 should be. From the start of her first stock car season that began with a very credible 24th finish among the 43 cars in the ARCA Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at Daytona International Speedway in February, it has been Dufault's goal to run in Canada's lone Nationwide stop at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. "We are pretty close to signing a Nationwide
contract for Montreal," Dufault said. "We are in talks right now and we should be able to announce it in the next couple of weeks." One of the problems, of course, is that most of the top echelon race teams who normally would be looking for a Canadian driver for the Canadian race have already signed someone. Dufault would also have to find time in the next month to test an NNS car on a road course, something that doesn't come cheap. Dufault admits she won't take the first offer that comes along. She said she wants a car that will be competitive because she has no desire to run at the back of the pack.(Toronto Sun)(6-17-2011

By winning at Michigan Denny Hamlin became the 10th different winner of the season. His hard fought victory over Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards and his own teammate, Kyle Busch, added to what’s been a thrilling season marked by a diverse cast of characters.
Adding to that cast Sunday were Paul Menard and Landon Cassill.
In his fifth full Cup Series season and first at Richard Childress Racing, Menard has been an aberration. Through 15 races he’s scored three top-fives, four top-10s and he sits 16th in the points. Compare that to two top-fives and seven top-tens in the four full seasons prior. The cherry on top, so far this season, is a fourth place finish on Sunday- a solid weekend bookend to his fourth place finish in the Nationwide race on Saturday.
Menard, who struggled through the end at DEI and went through the turmoil of Yates and RPM last season, is in the first truly stable ride of his career and so far it looks like he’s making the most of it.
For Cassill, who has yet to have a full season ride somewhere, Sunday was a bright spot. In the last couple of years he has fought to just have a seat – often times that’s meant starting and parking for some of the sport’s bottom of the barrel teams.
This season, James Finch has let Cassill actually finish races and while there hasn’t been a ton to write home about, it hasn’t been all bad. Sunday, for instance, Cassill out drove teams much better funded than his for an impressive 12th place finish.
For Cassill, these opportunities provide him a stage to showcase his talent and hopefully get noticed by a better funded organization.
With good finishes from Menard and Cassill, our 10th different winner of the season and possible penalties on the horizon for Joe Gibbs Racing, feel free to use this as your Michigan sound off post.
