TV Times - Fontana... Good News... Bad News...
By Lou Modestino

Last Sunday saw Jimmie Johnson take his fifth win at Fontana, which is the good news.

The bad news is who will keep Jimmie from taking another championship and prevent him from making 2010 as another boring year for the NASCAR Cup Series?

Maybe Kevin Harvick can do it, if he and his team can just eek out a little more power and stay on track.

The Hartford renews with RCR

On Wednesday, Richard Childress Racing (RCR) announced in a press release that The Hartford will return as a sponsor on the No. 33 Chevrolet driven by Clint Bowyer in the Sprint Cup Series this season.  The Hartford will serve as the primary sponsor on the No. 33 at three races: the Southern 500 on May 8, the Pennsylvania 500 on August 1, and the Pepsi Max 400 in Fontana on October 10.  In addition, The Hartford will once again serve as an associate sponsor on the No. 33 for the remaining 31 non-primary sponsorship races.

Representatives from the company are pleased at the continuation of their relationship with RCR.

"The RCR sponsorship is a wonderful experience for our customers and employees," said Mitch Jawitz, Vice President of The Hartford.  "This year, we plan to offer even more ways for NASCAR fans to get involved with the racing experience. Just like Bowyer’s pit crew, The Hartford team is fanatical about keeping our drivers' lives moving forward uninterrupted."

The No. 33 will once again be adorned in The Hartford's maroon, light blue, and white colors for the three races that it will serve in the primary sponsorship role.

Bristol Motor Speedway to add additional SAFER Barriers

Bristol Motor Speedway announced on Wednesday that they have started to extend the SAFER Barriers off the exits of Turns 2 and 4 at the high-banked, half-mile oval.  The improvements will add approximately 160 extra feet of SAFER Barrier coverage to the track.

These barrier improvements, albeit minor, will likely affect the racing off the corners due to the fact the extended SAFER Barriers will change the racing line.  This could cause more aggressive on-track action, making it more difficult to race through those corners side-by-side.

The barrier modifications began last week and will be finished in time for the Sprint Cup/Nationwide Series weekend (Food City 500, Scotts Turf Builder 300) on March 19-21.

Talladega Superspeeedway announces CoT spoiler test open to public

Talladega Superspeedway announced Wednesday that the Sprint Cup Series test session, scheduled to be held at the 2.66-mile tri-oval on March 16th, will be open to the public.  Gates will open at 8:30 AM CST, with the first cars scheduled to hit the track at 9 AM.

There is no admission fee for the public to view the test session.  Attendees can also bring their own food and drink. However, normal cooler rules apply (i.e. - soft-sided coolers, no glass bottles, and size requirements).

Officials at the gigantic speed palace are excited about the new package and the test session that will be held.

"The test session falls at a perfect time for us," Talladega Superspeedway President Rick Humphrey said on Wednesday.  "Our renovated grandstands will be open, so fans can check out those areas, and NASCAR will be unveiling their new competition package. It’s a great way for fans to get a feel for how Talladega is going to look during the Aaron’s Dream Weekend, April 23-25.”

As Humphrey mentioned, the track is in the process of replacing the 40-year-old folding chair seats in the tri-oval grandstands with stadium-style flip down seats with cup holders.  The old seats are currently for sale at talladegasuperspeedway.com in sets of four for $99 each.

Geoff Bodine officially confirmed in Team Gill Racing's No. 95 for Atlanta

Team Gill Racing, a new team in the Camping World Truck Series this season, announced on Wednesday that Geoff Bodine, 60, will drive the team's No. 95 entry in the Atlanta 200 on March 6.  In addition, the team will salute the U.S. Bobsled team on the No. 95 during Bodine's weekend behind the wheel. Johnny Benson, who had only signed with the team for Daytona, will not continue on with the program despite a promising eighth place finish to start the season.

Bodine is no stranger to Trucks, having previously made 21 starts in the series.  He has six career top 5 finishes, all during the inaugural 1995 season.  His best runs were a trio of runner-up finishes at Saugus Speedway in Santa Clarita, California, Bristol, and Richmond.  In addition, Bodine owned trucks from 1995-1997, visiting Victory Lane three times in 1996 with Dave Rezendes behind the wheel.

Bodine is a longtime supporter of the U.S. Bobsled team, having formed the Bo-Dyn Bobsled Company in 1992 after the general failure of the U.S. Bobsled team to be competitive during the '92 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France.  Today, Bodine's company constructs all bobsleds used by the American team, and has claimed multiple medals in Olympic and World Championship-level competitions.

Bristol Extends SAFER Barriers

Bristol Motor Speedway officials have announced the addition of more than 160 feet of SAFER barriers lining the outside wall at the popular half-mile track. Track operations personnel extended SAFER (Steel And Foam Energy Reduction) barriers at the exits of Turns 2 and 4. Work began last week and will be completed before NASCAR teams arrive for the Food City 500 weekend, scheduled for March 19-21. “We believe with these modifications, we will not only increase driver safety, but will also create a different transition at the exit of the turns,” said Jeff Byrd, BMS President and General Manager. “While we don’t know exactly how this will impact the racing, the more confined racing area should create less elbow room and tighten up the racing groove at those points.” A deteriorating track surface forced officials to put down a fresh layer of concrete in the summer of 2007, and an additional four feet of width to the racing groove was part of the change. The modifications will eliminate some of that added room.  ...Daily Headlines

Michigan Bans Smoking

All grandstand seating, mezzanines, concession and restroom buildings, suites and chalets at Michigan International Speedway will be smoke-free, racetrack officials have announced. The ban comes on the heels of a state measure that will go into effect May 1, banning smoking in public places. -- “Not only are we adhering to the law, but we are addressing a growing number of concerns from our race fans who do not smoke,” MIS President Roger Curtis said. “Race fans who smoke, can still do so in approved areas. We appreciate all our fans for their understanding and patience.” -- Smokers may choose to smoke in open-air areas behind the grandstands, in the New Holland Fan Plaza and in campgrounds.  ...More

Axles A Concern For HMS

There is some concern at Hendrick Motorsports that the broken axle that left Dale Earnhardt Jr. with a 32nd-place finish on Sunday at Auto Club Speedway could be a more widespread problem. Earnhardt's crew chief, Lance McGrew, said the axle of race winner Jimmie Johnson was about six laps from breaking and that issues were discovered on other HMS cars during Saturday's final practice. -- "Oh, absolutely," McGrew told ESPN.com on Tuesday. "I'm sweating this weekend along with Atlanta, which is historically really bad on axles. To say there's not a stir about it would be an understatement."  ...More

The website offers up to 60 photos of each vehicle from award winning dealerships, and free CARFAX reports.(JR Motorsports PR)(2-24-2010)

·         Interstate Batteries on the #20 with Hamlin: With only a handful of NASCAR Nationwide Series commitments on his slate for 2010, Denny Hamlin's mantra for the season can be summed up quite simply: "Quality, not quantity." Hamlin will make his first Nationwide Series start of the year when he straps himself into the #20 Interstate Batteries Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) in Saturday's Sam's Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.(True Speed Communications/JGR PR)(2-24-2010)

·         Operation Helmet on the #18 at Vegas: Kyle Busch, driver of the #18 Z-Line Designs/Operation Helmet Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, finished second in the 2007 Nationwide Series race, but has crashed out of the last two races at Las Vegas. While Busch looks to find victory lane, his car will also sport the logo of Operation Helmet, a 100 percent volunteer, non-partisan charitable organization headquartered in Montgomery, Texas, that provides helmet upgrade kits free of charge to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Operation Helmet, which was also on the #18 during several races during 2009, is led by Dr. Bob Meadors, whose tireless efforts have led to more than 47,000 helmet upgrade kits being distributed to U.S. military personnel since 2004. The upgrade kits prevent traumatic head and brain injuries to soldiers by focusing on three core elements protection, comfort and stability. Shock-absorbing pads keep the helmet from slapping the skull when hit with a blast or other impact, thereby decreasing the chances of brain injuries. Most importantly, the upgrade kit allows a helmet to stay on a soldier's head longer, more often and in one place.(JGR PR)(2-24-2010)

·         Carrot Top joins the #01 team at Vegas: Legendary comedian Carrot Top will be the "Crew Manager" for Mike Wallace in the Monster Diesel #01 Nationwide Series Chevy at Las Vegas. The combination of Carrot Top and Monster Diesel should add even more boost to the team at Las Vegas. Carrot Top is seeking help from his fans to provide new props for his LUXOR Las Vegas act.(J-D Motorsports PR)(2-24-2010)

·         Marc Davis to run at Las Vegas? UPDATE NO: [NASCAR Insiders] are hearing that 19 year old driver Marc Davis will return to the Nationwide Series next weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Sam's Town 300. He will be behind the wheel of the #58 Macys.com Cavi Chevy for XXXtreme Motorsport.(NASCAR Insiders)(2-18-2010)
UPDATE: The Las Vegas entry list for the Nationwide Series this week has Marc Davis as one of the entries. But he is not going to Vegas. He's not ready. He's probably ready from a mental standpoint despite the death of his mentor his father, Harry Davis last month. He's just not ready with cars that he feels are capable of a strong showing. Among the things his father had stressed for this year was to run well at the races he can afford to run and not stretch his wallet or his equipment too thin. Harry Davis, 62, died Jan. 21 when a blood clot that followed a hip replacement resulted in a heart attack.(

Geoff Bodine in the #95 at Atlanta: UPDATE: Official announcement; Setzer returns to #46: Hearing that Geoff Bodine is going to be the driver for the #95 Team Gill Racing truck for owners Lance Fenton and Danny Gill at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 6th.(Jayski.com)(2-15-2010)
UPDATE: Team Gill Racing has announced that Geoff Bodine will be driving its #95 Dodge Ram at the Camping World Truck Series event on March 6th in Atlanta. Bodine will return to Atlanta Motor Speedway where his name remains in the record books. Bodine's speed of 197.478 mph during the NASACAR Sprint Cup qualifying in November of 1997 is the fastest one-lap speed ever recorded at Atlanta Motor Speedway. While Team Gill Racing continues searching for a full season sponsor, they plan to add a salute to the U.S.A. Olympic Bobsled team on the #95 Dodge Ram for their efforts at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. Bodine will be joined by Dennis Setzer in the #46 Dodge Ram for Team Gill Racing in Atlanta. Setzer is coming off a third place finish at Daytona.(

  • Piquet's next race unclear; still looking to run full season: During an interview on SPEEDtv's Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain, Nelson Piquet Jr. stated that although he would love to run the full Camping World Truck Series season, as of right now he's operating on a race-by-race basis. To-date nothing has been finalized for the next race or season. Piquet said he's still working on putting a package together and that he's not tied to anybody or anything, and right now he's seeing where the best opportunities are to go too. He would like to run Atlanta; as of right now he's not sure if he will be there.(SPEEDtv.com)(2-24-2010)
  • Veterans say 2010 to be most competitive season yet: Matt Crafton (#88 Menards Chevrolet) left Daytona International Speedway literally salivating in delight over his fifth-place finish in the 2010 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season opener. "It fits perfectly with what we want to accomplish this year," said Crafton, who finished runner-up to Ron Hornaday Jr. (#33 Longhorn Chevrolet) in last year's point standings. "We went down there with a plan this year to be really smart and stay out of any situation that would put us out of the race early. "We did that and we ended up with the best finish we've ever had down there." Crafton heads for Atlanta ahead of longtime nemesis Hornaday but that fact doesn't guarantee the Tulare, Calif., competitor's upgrade to his first NASCAR national series title. Crafton and other series veterans are convinced the competition level has reached unprecedented heights in 2010.(NASCAR PR) [Read more NASCAR News & Notes on the Atlanta Race Page.](2-22-2010)
