Kyle Busch dies at age 41 (NASCAR Cup)
Busch’s death came hours after his family had confirmed in a social media statement that he was hospitalized with an unspecified severe illness. The Busch family, NASCAR and Richard Childress Racing put out a joint statement Thursday evening confirming the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion’s passing.
It read:
“On behalf of the Busch family, everyone at Richard Childress Racing and all of NASCAR, we are devastated to announce the sudden and tragic passing of Kyle Busch.
“Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch. A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. He was fierce, he was passionate, he was immensely skilled and he cared deeply about the sport and fans. Throughout a career that spanned more than two decades, Kyle set records in national series wins, won championships at NASCAR’s highest level and fostered the next generation of drivers as an owner in the Truck Series. His sharp wit and competitive spirit sparked a deep emotional connection with race fans of every age, creating the proud and loyal ‘Rowdy Nation.’ Our thoughts are with Samantha, Brexton and Lennix, Kyle and Samantha’s parents, Kurt and all of Kyle’s family, Richard and Judy Childress, everyone at Richard Childress Racing, his teammates, friends and fans. NASCAR lost a giant of the sport today, far too soon.
“During this incredibly difficult time, we ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy and continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Further updates will be shared as appropriate.”
Busch was in the midst of his 22nd full-time Cup season and had won his record-extending 69th Craftsman Truck Series race just six days earlier at Dover Motor Speedway. All told, the Nevadan secured 234 NASCAR national series victories, making him the sport’s all-time winningest driver at the national level. He had a record 102 O’Reilly Auto Parts Series wins and sits ninth on the Cup wins list with 63 victories.
In his own way, Busch was a throwback to a different era for NASCAR - an extremely talented driver with a larger-than-life personality. He arrived on the scene at age 16 and helped rewrite the rulebook in both age requirements and limiting starts from Cup Series stars in NASCAR’s second and third tours.
Over the years with three legendary teams, onlookers saw Busch grow up in front of their eyes each week in the Cup Series garage. He arrived as a brash, aggressive young star known as “Shrub” - initially overshadowed by his star brother, Kurt, but quickly making a name of his own.
As time moved on, Busch inherited the nickname “Rowdy,” an homage to a key character in “Days of Thunder” and a nod to Busch’s own aggressiveness behind the wheel.
By the time he became a Cup Series champion in 2015, Busch had developed into one of modern NASCAR’s greatest stars. His immense talent behind the wheel was undeniable. His personality off the track was memorable, while his style on it ruffled feathers. In the times when he won races, Busch’s signature celebration - a riveting burnout followed by a showman’s bow to the crowd with the checkered flag - was among the most iconic in NASCAR history.
As the brother of Kurt and foil to fan-favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr., Busch emerged as one of NASCAR’s biggest villains in the 2000s and 2010s. But over time, as his style on-track became one of clean, hard racing and he showed his growing love and focus as a father and husband off-track, fans softened their opinion on the aging veteran.
Along the way, he made countless memories, both good and bad.
There were quick wins and an immediate showcase of his talents for Hendrick Motorsports. The smashing of a guitar at Nashville Superspeedway. Run-ins with Ron Hornaday Jr., Earnhardt, Brad Keselowski and, most recently, John Hunter Nemechek. Fights with Joey Logano and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. The first win in NASCAR’s Car of Tomorrow and Busch’s immediate blasting of the car. Countless bows and two Cup championships with Joe Gibbs Racing. Breaking his legs in the 2015 O’Reilly opener and winning the title anyways. Saying “Everything is Great” repeatedly during a media appearance and later selling shirts with the phrase. An iconic finish in one of NASCAR’s most memorable last laps at Chicagoland Speedway and the last victory in the two-mile iteration of what was then Auto Club Speedway in 2023.
In his final years with Richard Childress Racing, the intense boos Busch faced slowly gave way to cheers. He mended fences with several of his former rivals - Earnhardt even noted in a Thursday tweet that they were planning for Busch to drive one of his late models - and earned new fans among parents and dirt racing supporters as he dabbled in the discipline to support his son, Brexton.
Busch is survived by his parents, his wife, Samantha, and two children - son Brexton, 11, and a four-year-old daughter named Lennix.

Alexander Rossi planning to compete after suffering Monday injuries (IndyCar)
What started as a promising Month of May took an unfortunate turn for Alexander Rossi on Monday, as the Californian suffered minor injuries in a violent practice crash at Indianapolis Motor Speedway that briefly left his ability to compete in Sunday’s race uncertain.
A decade removed from his shocking fuel mileage win and debut in the Indianapolis 500’s 100th running, Rossi qualified second to give himself a strong chance to earn a second victory in the race this season. But less than 24 hours later, Rossi spun off Turn 2 and slammed hard into the outside wall, briefly pushing the car to its side before it returned to the racing surface on all four wheels and was impacted by Pato O’Ward’s No. 5.
Both drivers made the Fast Six in qualifying but will use backup cars for Sunday’s race.
Rossi was evaluated in the infield care center and later transferred to a local hospital, where Ed Carpenter Racing confirmed he “underwent successful outpatient procedures this evening to repair minor injuries to a finger on his left hand and his right ankle.”
ECR noted at the time that Rossi’s progress would be evaluated with “full intent of participating in final practice on Friday, May 22 and the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 24.”
Rossi made a public appearance to tape the “Off Track With Hinch & Rossi” the next day and was observed with a boot on his right ankle and minor bandaging, but he noted plans to have the boot off as soon as Wednesday.
On Thursday afternoon, ECR put out a statement confirming that Rossi was good to go for Carb Day and the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
“Alexander Rossi, driver of the No. 20 Java House Chevrolet for ECR, has been cleared to compete in the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500 by INDYCAR Medical Director Dr. Julia Vaizer,” the team wrote.

Harvick, Burton and Phillips secure Hall of Fame honors (NASCAR Cup)
After a day of discussion and decisions from the Hall of Fame Voting Panel, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton and Larry Phillips were confirmed as the Hall’s inductees for the year to come.
Harvick led the way in voting among the list of 10 candidates for the Modern Era Ballot, obtaining 92% of all possible votes. His former Richard Childress Racing teammate, Burton, led a tight crop of contenders below with 32% of the votes to secure the second induction. Neil Bonnett, Randy Dorton and Greg Biffle rounded out the top-five.
Harvick was on obvious selection in his first year of eligibility, having earned titles in both of NASCAR’s top-two tours and overcame the shadow of the late Dale Earnhardt when he replaced him in 2001 to establish his own place in the sport’s lore. The Californian is the 2014 Cup champion and has 60 series victories - including wins in the Daytona 500, Brickyard 400, Southern 500 and Coca-Cola 600 - leaving him 11th in the tour’s all-time wins list.
Burton’s resume is comparatively light, with no championships and only 21 Cup Series wins. But he also earned 27 O’Reilly Auto Parts Series victories and has become one of the sport’s key figures both in the garage area and on television. Known as ‘The Mayor,’ Burton established himself as the linking force between the drivers and NASCAR during his driving days and has spent years as a broadcaster for NBC Sports since his competitive retirement.
Phillips is a star of NASCAR’s grassroots level. Listed as one of the sport’s 75 Greatest Drivers, the veteran’s victory total is estimated to be as high as 2,000, helping himself secure five NASCAR Weekly Series titles. He famously earned 13 track championships in three states with 220 wins in 289 NASCAR-sanctioned starts from 1989 through 1996. Phillips earned 38% of the Pioneer ballot votes to secure the nomination.
Lesa France Kennedy was selected to received the Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR. She serves as NASCAR’s Executive Vice Chair after a career that’s included a litany of leadership roles and accomplishments around the sport. Kennedy is considered to be among the strongest, most influential women in sports.
The Class of 2027 will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on Jan. 22, 2027.
(Source(s): NASCAR.com)

Number of the Day: 234
Richard Petty’s 200 wins in the old days of the NASCAR Cup Series will never be topped, but Kyle Busch’s 234 victories across NASCAR’s three national tours put him in his own realm among the sport’s modern stars. The next closest driver outside of Petty, soon-to-be Hall of Fame inductee Kevin Harvick, had only 121 wins. That’s just 51.7% of Rowdy’s win total, for any wondering.
It’s safe to say Busch will be a lock for the Hall as soon as he’s eligible - and there’s a case to be made that he should be a unanimous decision for it. The only shame is that he didn’t get the twilight years of his career to add to that already-unprecedented win total.
