Max Papis Avoids Late-Race Cautions to Bring Home Top-15 at Phoenix

AVONDALE, Ariz. (February 25, 2011) – One week after crossing the finish line in 12th-place at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, Max Papis and the No. 9 GEICO Racing team trekked cross country to compete at Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway, the second stop of the 2011 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season. Numerous late race cautions plagued the field, but Papis used patience to bring home a solid 15th-place finish in the Arizona desert. A normal schedule occurrence saw the Truck Series complete a one-day show on Friday, as practice, qualifying and the race all took place during the same day at the one-mile track. After dialing in the GEICO Toyota in the morning practice session, Papis laid down a

Kyle Busch Wins Phoenix Truck Race

CIA Stock Photos

Busch Holds Off Clint Bowyer

Win the race off pit road. Win the race. After taking the lead under caution on Lap 44 of Friday night’s Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix International Raceway, Kyle Busch led the final 107 to post his second win at the 1-mile track and his 25th in the Camping World Truck Series. Busch beat polesitter Clint Bowyer to the checkered flag by .291 seconds, as Bowyer tightened the margin on the final lap. Ron Hornaday Jr. was third, followed by Johnny Sauter and Austin Dillon.

As full-time Sprint Cup drivers, Busch and Bowyer aren’t collecting points in the truck series. Consequently, seventh-place finisher Matt Crafton left Phoenix with a one-point lead over Clay Rogers (16th Friday) in the series standings. -- “We had a really good truck, but I was scared there at the beginning,” said Busch, who ran second to a dominant Bowyer at Phoenix in November. “I was like, ‘Man, it’s going to come down like last fall—Clint’s going to walk the dog on this one.’ -- “But (crew chief) Eric (Phillips) made some changes to this thing that really brought it to life.”

Bowyer faulted himself for not being able to overtake Busch on six restarts in the final 50 laps of the race. “Whichever one of us had clean air, we were about a 10th (of a second) to a 10th and a half better,” Bowyer said. “For me—and I’m not making any excuses; I was screwing up big-time on the restarts—I’m just not used to a) not having any power and b) I was hitting the rev what sounded like about 5,000 less rpm than it should have been. “I was just messing up. It’s the difference between a Corvette and an Impala—maybe a Volt. … That’s that electric car.”

Bowyer dominated the opening green-flag run, leading the first 41 laps before Chase Mattioli blew his right front tire and scattered debris in Turn 3. After pit stops, Busch was first off pit road and held the top spot through four more cautions, the last of which (and fifth of the race) was caused by a wreck off Turn 4 involving defending series champion Todd Bodine, David Starr and Dusty Davis. Busch led the field to a restart on Lap 120, having held the point for 76 consecutive laps. Timothy Peters’ spin in Turn 2 on Lap 123 slowed the race for the sixth time. In the late going, the trucks had difficulty running more than three laps without a caution. Brendan Gaughan spun and backed into the wall in Turn 2 on Lap 128 to bring out the seventh yellow flag.

Trevor Bayne Wrecks, Will Go To Backup Car

Trevor Bayne came back down to earth in a hurry. In his first lap of practice Friday at Phoenix International Raceway, the Daytona 500’s youngest winner slapped the Turn 3 wall after his brakes failed to slow the No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford. “On pit road, I told them the brakes felt like they weren’t working right,” Bayne, 20, said after the incident. “I paced myself getting into the corner, and the brakes just never worked. “Even down the backstretch, I was playing with the bias, trying to get them to dial, but then I went off into the corner, and they just never worked, and it never slowed down.” Wood Brothers Racing unloaded a backup car for Bayne, who missed the rest of the first practice session as the team put an engine in the car. “It’s the first backup car I’m going to have to go to, but I don’t know what happened to the car and why the brakes weren’t right there,” Bayne said.

Danica Patrick Says She Can Learn From Bayne

Trevor Bayne’s life has been revving on the red line ever since Sunday, when he stunned the stock car racing universe with his unlikely victory in the 500. Despite shuttling from one appearance to another over the four days that followed the race, Bayne has remained exceptionally well-grounded. Who says so? None other than Danica Patrick, 28, who has inspired her share of media attention over the past few years. Patrick and Bayne appeared together at a charity event Thursday night at the Arizona Biltmore. “Honestly, he’s such a nice kid,” Patrick said Friday, after posting the 24th-fastest speed in the first Nationwide Series practice session at Phoenix. “He’s so down to earth. He’s so into charity and things like that. I tried to talk him into buying something expensive with his prize money, but he doesn’t want anything -- so apparently I have a lot to learn from a 20-year-old. “I don’t know if he needs much advice. I think he’s got his head on straight, he seems to have good people around him, and all I said from my experience was, ‘Just continue to be yourself.’”

Phoenix Records Fall

Cool temperatures were conducive to hot laps Friday at the 1-mile track. In the first Sprint Cup practice session, Kurt Busch posted a lap at 136.539 mph, bettering the record 136.389 mph Carl Edwards ran during qualifying last November. “We went out in qualifying trim, and I think that I got a draft—or at least the air was broken up—when I chased (Clint) Bowyer down right in front of me, and that might have added to our car running a little faster,” Busch said. “Our goal was to go out right away and post a fast lap, in case qualifying is rained out.” Busch’s fast lap held up through second practice. That means he’ll go out last in Saturday’s qualifying session among drivers already locked into the field. If qualifying is rained out—and there’s a 60 percent chance of rain in Phoenix on Saturday—Busch will start Sunday’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 from the pole. The Camping World Truck Series track record also fell Friday, with pole winner Clint Bowyer (133.949 mph) and second-place qualifier Austin Dillon (133.695 mph) breaking the record 133.605 mph Dillon set during qualifying in November.

Edwards Leaps Off Stratosphere Casino

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Carl Edwards visited Las Vegas on Thursday to help promote the March 3-6 NASCAR Weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Edwards, along with ESPN NASCAR reporter and Las Vegas native Jamie Little and AMA Superbike Series legend Miguel Duhamel, jumped off the Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas. The SkyJump Las Vegas attraction is located 108 stories above the ground at the Stratosphere Casino, Hotel and Tower on the Las Vegas Strip. "It sounded like it was really going to be fun," Edwards explained. "I told my PR guy, ‘We’re going to Vegas, let’s do something really fun, like skydiving or something.’ Then they showed me this video on the Internet and I said, ‘That’s it -- that’ll be a blast.’ -- Then today I realized I actually had to do it."

Edwards and Little were scheduled to jump, but Duhamel was a surprise addition. The winner of LVMS’s 2008 Kobalt Tools 400 was speaking at a luncheon earlier in the day when he received a text from his friend, Duhamel. Miguel heard Carl was in town and asked what his plans were. Edwards texted back, "I’m going to jump off the Stratosphere at 2 p.m." Duhamel, jokingly referring to Edwards’ recent Daytona 500 finish, replied, "Carl, it’s okay, second place was really not that bad. You’ll win next year." -- Duhamel met Carl and Jamie at the Stratosphere and the trio suited up. Duhamel went first, followed by Little, then Edwards. "You’re standing up there, and they go, ‘Three, two, one’ and I said, ‘Wait a second -- let’s check everything one more time,’" said Edwards. "That was an ESPN SportsCenter moment, for sure. It was unbelievable -- I want to go do it again. Anybody who is planning to come to Vegas, go to the Stratosphere and jump off. It’s a cool thing to do."

Racing Deaths Have Increased In Past Ten Years

A study on motor racing safety recently published by the Charlotte Observer found that fatalities have increased at small tracks and in drag racing over the last ten years. That did not come as a surprise to Jim Downing, who introduced the first head and neck restraint known as the HANS Device to motor racing 25 years ago. -- “We’ve been saying for many years that short track ovals and drag strips can be just as dangerous as the big ovals and superspeedways,” said Downing. “The Observer study underscores what we have known to be true. Racing accidents occurring at lower rates of speed can be fatal. If more people were aware of this information, we could save some lives.” -- The story about the safety study appeared on the Observer’s racing web site (thatsracin.com) and on the front page of the Observer’s print editions prior to this year’s Daytona 500, the tenth anniversary of the fatal accident of Dale Earnhardt on the final lap of the race in 2001.

The Observer’s inaugural landmark study examined the number of deaths in all forms of racing in the U.S. over the ten years prior to Feb. 18, 2001, the date of Earnhardt’s crash. The recent study examined the years from that day in 2001 to the present. The latest study found that deaths at small tracks increased to at least 124 over the last ten years compared to at least 115 in the previous ten years. Drag strips experienced the sharpest percentage increase according to the Observer study. At least 58 fatalities occurred in the last ten years versus at least 42 in the prior 10-year period. The study acknowledged the use of better safety equipment in addition to track and car improvements helped NASCAR’s top three touring divisions reduce fatal accidents to zero in the ten years following Earnhardt’s crash. But racers on small tracks and drag strips have been less committed to taking advantage of improvements in safety technology such as the HANS Device. “Weekend warriors sometimes are more inclined to buy a new set of tires than to invest in safety equipment,” said Downing. “This study by the Observer confirms that participants need to look more closely at the issue of safety out of concern for themselves and members of their families.” -- Source: (thatsracin.com)

Wingo Named Crew Chief Of The Race At Daytona

Donnie Wingo, crew chief for the No. 21 Wood Brothers Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion driven by rookie Trevor Bayne, has been named the WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief of the Race following Sunday's 53rd running of the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. Bayne pulled off one of the most stunning upsets in the history of NASCAR. In only his second career start, the 20-year-old captured the checkered flag in the Great American Race, holding off a late charge by fellow Ford driver Carl Edwards and giving the famed Woods Brothers their fifth Daytona 500 victory. Wingo and company gave Bayne what he called "a rocket" of a car after overcoming adversity. After qualifying third, Bayne was involved in a last-lap crash during Thursday's Gatorade Duel (a unique heat-race format that determines the starting order for the Daytona 500), forcing the Wingo-led team to completely rebuild the car. When the green flag fell Sunday, it was evident that Wingo and his team made the right repairs. Bayne quickly moved from his 32nd starting position to the top-10, before pulling to the head of the field on the final green-white-checkered-flag finish. The win was the first for the Woods Brothers - a pioneer NASCAR team since the 1950s - in 10 years and their first Daytona 500 triumph since 1976 when Hall of Famer David Pearson took the red and white, gold numeral No. 21 to Victory Lane.

WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief Results

Steve Addington led Kurt Busch's No. 2 Shell-Pennzoil team to an impressive fifth-place finish. He led 10 times for 19 laps. Busch thought he would have a shot at the victory with his brother Kyle running in tow helping push him to the front, but Kyle had a late-race pit stop just before the final restart of the day. It was a solid week for Busch as he won the Budweiser Shootout and the first Gatorade Duel qualifying race on Thursday. Paul Wolfe and the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge of Brad Keselowski finished in a disappointing 29th following an incident on lap 167 which sent Keselowski into the wall, ending his day. Starting from the 16th position, the Wolfe-led team led nine laps and remained in the top-10 for the first 50 laps.

WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief Voting Team

Addington and Wolfe, along with Hammond and Sirius NASCAR Radio's Claire B. Lang, serve as the panel for the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief Challenge and vote for the weekly crew chief winners. Each weekly WYPALL Crew Chief Challenge winner will be a guest on Lang's "Dialed In" program on Sirius NASCAR Radio Channel 128 at 8 p.m. EST on Wednesdays throughout the season. The crew chief with the most weekly top wins will be honored as the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Year and will be presented a $10,000 check during the weekend of the WYPALL 200 Presented by Kimberly-Clark Professional Nationwide Series race at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday, November 12, 2011. The winner will also serve as the race's Grand Marshal.

  • NASCAR will look at changes for Talladega: NASCAR officials are looking at changes for Talladega based on last week's Daytona 500 but admit that maybe nothing needs to be done. The two-by-two drafting that dominated Daytona is expected to play a key role at Talladega, the next restrictor-plate race. So, what might NASCAR do before the April 17 race there? "We're still looking at some things," said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. "I don't think it's something that's broken; that's my personal opinion. We'll have to see. I think we'll just have to sit back and watch a little bit of it and see what happens....We're getting some feedback from teams, but, ultimately, we have to make the decisions on what is good for the garage area. So, we're continuing our internal discussions, knowing that the timeline is very short because teams are preparing for Talladega already."(Virginian Pilot)(2-26-2011)
  • Should drivers communicate with each other during races? Drivers were able to communicate with non-teammates for the first time during the Daytona 500, which added an intriguing element to NASCAR's biggest race. Because there was a need for two-car tandems to work together while the race was going on, many drivers set their radios up so they could speak with their competitors. But some drivers believe the practice should be banned. "I think NASCAR should step in on drivers getting on other teams' radios," #22-Kurt Busch said. "... We shouldn't be able to communicate with radios." #5-Mark Martin had only four drivers among his options for chatting: His three teammates and #43-AJ Allmendinger. But the veteran agreed with Busch, saying he hopes his competitors "clean the radios up." #27-Paul Menard said he had 12 different drivers on his radio during the Daytona 500 - and was just fine with continuing the practice for future restrictor-plate races if NASCAR doesn't pass a rule against it. #99-Carl Edwards backed the open radio communication between drivers based on safety reasons, calling it "necessary."(SB Nation)(2-26-2011)
  • Harvick not concerned about Daytona engine failure: From Kevin Harvick's media availability Friday at Phoenix:
DID YOU GUYS FIGURE OUT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ENGINE? "Yes."
    WHAT HAPPENED? "It broke. (laughter)"
ANY MORE DETAILS? "Yes, not that I'm going to tell you but they have a good idea. They called me Monday morning and told me what had happened and I feel like they have a good direction to fix it."
WAS IT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT OR SOMETHING? "Both of them."
ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT GOING FORWARD? "No, I don't think it's something to worry about. I think it's just something we have to make an adjustment on. I think the No. 29 and No. 31 both had the same problem."(Chevy PR)
AND: Kevin Harvick's and Jeff Burton's early Daytona departures were due to scuffed pistons in the engine. The Earnhardt Childress Racing engine department worked overtime this week to recreate the overheating situation that occurred because the current pistons were not designed to the same degree as the block.(
    Fox Sports)(2-26-2011)
  • Allmendinger interested in IndyCar offer: Former open-wheel driver #43-A.J. Allmendinger says he might be open to racing in IndyCar's season finale in Las Vegas for a chance at $5 million. Allmendinger, who switched to NASCAR in 2008, says while driving in the Oct. 16 race is an unlikely scenario, the prize money would be good incentive to give it a try. IndyCar announced last week that it will allow up to five qualified drivers from outside the series a chance to win $5 million if they're able to win the race. Allmendinger, Juan Pablo Montoya and Tony Stewart have been mentioned as drivers who might give it a try because of their backgrounds in open-wheel racing. Montoya said it would be logistically impossible since NASCAR races in Charlotte that same weekend.(Associated Press/ESPN.com)(2-26-2011)
  • Germain, Landon Cassill to run full season: UPDATE: Building on their heritage in motorsports, Big Red and ALL SPORT Body Quencher return to Sprint Cup competition in 2011 with a full time entry in the Sprint Cup series. Landon Cassill will drive the #60 car beginning with the SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500 Sprint Cup Series Race at Phoenix International Raceway this weekend and will race for the full season. Launched in 1937, Big Red, with its distinctive flavor and widespread distribution in 44 states, was one of the nation's fastest growing soft drink brands in 2010. ALL SPORT is one of the nation's leading sports drinks and has an extensive history in motorsports including Tommy Kendall's Championship in the Trans Am series.(Co-Pilott Motorsports Marketing)(2-24-2011)
UPDATE: Despite the agreement, the team is apparently still in need of additional sponsorship to continue. Landon Cassil
tweeted, "Great week, Big Red colors on the #60 car, still [start & park] but hopefully opportunities keep coming. gotta keep working, it's still week to week."(2-26-2011)

BRISTOL, Tenn. (Friday, Feb. 25, 2011) – Since the announcement yesterday of a homecoming rally Monday, Feb. 28, for Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne, response, questions, phone calls and emails have prompted officials to move the event to the Knoxville Civic Auditorium and Coliseum.

Originally planned for Market Square downtown in Bayne’s hometown of Knoxville, Tenn., rally organizers with Bristol Motor Speedway, Food City and the City of Knoxville decided Friday afternoon to shift sites to the Mary Costa Plaza location.

“People obviously have latched on to what a great story Trevor is and how well he has handled all of this immediate attention,” said Jerry Caldwell, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Bristol Motor Speedway. “Citizens not only of Knoxville, but all over the state of Tennessee are proud of this young man and so many have expressed an interest in coming, everyone involved believed this was a logical step.”

On a whirlwind media tour since his Feb. 20 win in the Daytona 500, including stops in New York, California and Chicago, Bayne’s stop in his hometown allows his “home” track of Bristol Motor Speedway, its sponsor Food City, and the City of Knoxville to say congratulations to the driver who just turned 20 the day before his big win.

Other than the location change, event times remain the same with the rally scheduled from 3:15 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

Bayne will be honored on stage by Knoxville Mayor Daniel T. Brown, Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett, Food City President and CEO Steven C. Smith, and Caldwell.

At the rally, fans will be able to purchase the Bristol Bayne Backer ticket package for a special price of $100. Included in the package is a ticket to the Jeff Byrd 500 Presented by Food City (March 20), the Scotts EZ Seed 300 (March 19), a special Bristol Bayne Backer t-shirt and be part of a question and answer session with Bayne in the BMS hospitality area. All Bristol Bayne Backer ticket holders also will be seated in proximity to each other so that Bayne’s cheering section will be obvious in the BMS grandstands.

The Bristol Bayne Backer special offer of $100 will only be available at the rally from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. Fans not able to attend the rally can call the BMS ticket office at 423-BRISTOL or toll free at 1-866-415-4158 to order tickets. After 5 p.m. the ticket package will be sold for $121.

ESPN’s Jerry Punch will be the emcee of the event, while a number of other city and state officials, as well as actor David Keith, a Knoxville native and legendary NASCAR car owners Eddie and Len Wood will participate in the event.

Parking for the event is available in all City parking garages as well as the Jackson Avenue surface lot.  Please go to http://www.cityofknoxville.org/map for parking information.

The Jeff Byrd 500 Presented by Food City race weekend gets under way March 18 with Ford Fan Friday qualifying, followed by the Scotts EZ Seed Showdown Friday, March 19 at 2 p.m. and the Jeff Byrd 500 Presented by Food City, which takes the green flag at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 20.

CAP Sports Group Hired to Oversee TV for USAR Pro Cup Series

Regional television package, syndication put Pro Cup Series Back on Television

Roxboro, N.C. -- USAR Pro Cup Series will return to television in a big way in 2011. The Series has re-hired a leader in sports television syndication, CAP Sports Group to get the auto racing series distributed nationwide. In 2008, the last year CAP Sports oversaw the distribution of the series, USAR cleared more than 65 million households in its comprehensive television package.

“I’ve really enjoyed working with the series from 2005-08,” said Curt Pires, owner of CAP Sports Group, LLC. “ USAR Pro Cup Series is a proven product that affiliates across the country have raved about and want back. I look forward to re-establishing agreements with regional sports networks in the coming months to carry the 2011 races.”

USAR and CAP Sports will be making several major affiliate announcements in the coming weeks and foresee 2011 distribution exceeding 65 million households.

"All of us at USAR headquarters are excited to finally have a leader in the sports industry to take our one hour race shows to a large segment of grassroots race fans”, said Chip Lofton, USAR CEO.

CAP Sports is a sports media company that specializes in creating unique business plans to fit the individual client. It has experienced great success in its first seven years. And its list of clientele is pretty impressive.

In addition to the USAR Pro Cup Series, CAP Sports has worked with the Charlotte Bobcats, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, U.S. Naval Academy, Charlotte Touchdown Club, USA Football, Time Warner Cable Sports and the Great Alaska Shootout on various media projects.

Prior to starting CAP Sports, Pires spent nearly 14 years at ESPN, Inc. in many different facets of the company, including syndication sales and production, regional and national programming and communications. He headed ESPN’s efforts to create a syndication sales arm in 2002 and lead the company’s regional sports network strategy including the syndication of ESPNEWS.
