Isle of Man hit with early tragedy, danger (Moto)
The Isle of Man TT is underway and set to begin proper racing soon. But things have already taken a dark, challenging turn in the opening days of motorsport’s most dangerous race.
Isle of Man TT organizers announced Thursday that competitor Daniel Ingham died following a crash at Doran’s Bend during a Wednesday qualifying session. Ingham was a newcomer to the TT, but had made laps around the Mountain course over the past decade, including a victory in the 2024 Senior Manx Grand Prix. He’s the first death for the event in two years.
“The Isle of Man TT Races pass on their deepest sympathy to his wife, Helayna, and his son Joey and daughter Phoebe, as well as his family and friends,” event organizers said in a statement.
Ingham’s passing added a tragic twist to a day that was also red-flagged when sidecar class favorites Ryan and Callum Crowe were hospitalized by a crash. The duo were at the Crosby jump when their machine went airborne - potentially assisted by windy conditions on the day.
That crash led to a major decision. During Thursday’s rest day, Isle of Man TT organizers launched “an immediate technical and operational review to assess the circumstances” of the incident and suspended sidecar racing for the rest of the event’s 2026 edition.
“This precautionary measure has been implemented in the interests of competitor and spectator safety and reflects the race organization’s commitment to reviewing all aspects of event safety and operational delivery whenever an incident occurs,” an organizer statement read. “All sidecar competitors and teams involved in the event have been briefed by race officials on the outcome of the initial review and the next stages of the assessment process.”
Sidecars are one of the unique parts of the TT, a two-person discipline that requires bravery and precision. They first ran at the 1923 edition of the TT and held world championship status from 1954 through 1976.
TT leadership instituted restrictor plates in an attempt to slow the machines this year, but the danger persisted.

 Ryan Preece keeps Texas penalties after failed appeal (NASCAR Cup)
Preece and his team were assessed a 25-point penalty and fined $50,000 after the crash was deemed intentional. RFK Racing hoped to prove that Preece didn’t intend to crash Gibbs and have the penalty amended, but the ultimately failed to do so.
Tom DeLoach, Dixon Johnston and Lake Speed heard the argument on behalf of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel (NMAP) with mixed results that ultimately leaned in NASCAR’s favor.
“Although not a unanimous decision, NASCAR and RFK Racing presented competing interpretations of common data,” an NMAP statement read. “Neither side clearly proved their point, but Mr. Preece’s comments showed that he chose to not cut his competitor any breaks.”
The decision is noteworthy for Preece, who finds himself 16th in the Cup Series standings and could desperately use the 25-point bump to lift him off the Chase cutline. Preece currently sits 15 points ahead of 17th-place Austin Cindric, but would have risen to a 40-point advantage in a tie for 13th had the penalty been rescinded.
RFK Racing doesn’t intend to escalate the appeal any further, but the decision could become a talking point down the road. The concept of being penalized for choosing to “not cut” a competitor “any breaks” could muddy the waters for future penalty decisions.

FIA president aiming to remove term limits from the role (F1)
After surviving what could’ve been a challenging FIA presidential election on a technicality with the endorsement rule, Mohammed Bun Sulayem is proposing the removal of term limits for the role.
Current rules require the FIA president to abandon the role after three terms totaling 12 years. But if he can make this change, the 64-year-old Emirati - or any future FIA presidents - could continue as president beyond that limit.
The plan will be discussed and voted on at the next FIA General Assembly. It’s expected to be passed by members.
“A proposal has been put forward to establish a consistent approach to tenure across all FIA bodies, similar to what currently exists for the world councils and the senate,” an FIA spokesperson said. “The proposal is subject to approval by the World Councils and by the General Assembly. FIA bodies retain full authority to democratically elect officeholders.”

Other FIA roles that currently have term limits include the president of anti-doping committee, and the head of the F1 cost-cap committee.
The current three-term limit was put in place by Ben Sulayem’s predecessor Jean Todt. The Frenchman replaced Max Mosley, who served as FIA president from 1993 until agreeing not to stand again following a dispute with F1 teams in 2009.
Asked by BBC Sport why it was decided to abolish term limits for all posts, rather than instate them for those that don’t currently have them, an FIA spokesperson was unable to provide a specific answer.
However, a spokesperson pointed to the NFL in the US, saying Roger Goodell had been commissioner since 2006 and had “transformed the sport into a global brand and it has an outstanding governance record”.
