Humpy Wheeler passes away, aged 86 (NASCAR Cup)
H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, one of the key figures behind NASCAR’s boom period in the 1990s and early 2000s, passed away on Wednesday at age 86.
Wheeler became of a fixture of the sport as the president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway, a position he held from 1975 through 2008. During that time he became known as the “P.T. Barnum of motorsports,” dazzling fans with memorable pre-race festivities and bringing about unique, attention-grabbing concepts like adding lights to the track for a night race - the 1992 All-Star Race that became an iconic moment in NASCAR lore as “One Hot Night.”
Along the way, Wheeler helped to mentor many in the industry and notably arranged for Janet Guthrie to contest the 1976 World 600. The North Carolina native is a member of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame and North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. He’s the 2026 winner of NASCAR’s Landmark Award for outstanding contributions to the sport - an honor that will be celebrated in January.
“Humpy Wheeler was a visionary whose name became synonymous with promotion and innovation in our sport,” NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France said in a series statement. “During his decades leading Charlotte Motor Speedway, Humpy transformed the fan experience through his creativity, bold ideas and tireless passion. His efforts helped expand NASCAR’s national footprint, cement Charlotte as a must-visit racing and entertainment complex and recently earned him the NASCAR Hall of Fame’s prestigious Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR.
“On behalf of NASCAR and the France family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Wheeler family and all who were touched by his remarkable life and legacy.”
Before his time in NASCAR, Wheeler organized and promoted bicycle races as a teenager, played football at the University of South Carolina and boxed semi-professionally, garnering a 40-2 record. But above all else, he put on many a show for race fans and helped lead the sport into perhaps its greatest era.

NASCAR confirms 2026 schedules (NASCAR)
After weeks of build, rumors and a few early reports, NASCAR finally rolled out its three 2026 national series schedules on Wednesday.
On the Cup Series side, there were no major surprises. All the biggest changes had either been announced previously or otherwise rumored. But there were a few notable tweaks for fans in the Northeast.
First off, Dover Motor Speedway will solely host the All-Star Race next May, sacrificing its points race to North Wilkesboro Speedway. Watkins Glen International isn’t giving up its points race, but the track’s traditional late summer date is shifting up to early May - a potential risk given the chance for cool weather in the region at the time.
San Diego will host its previously-announced Naval Base Coronado race in June. Chicagoland Speedway is replacing Chicago proper, returning to the schedule after a seven-year hiatus on July 5. Phoenix Raceway will shift up three races to open the Round of 8, offering up the championship slot to Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 8. New Hampshire Motor Speedway is shifting out of the playoffs to Aug. 23.
The schedule will provide two Cup off weekends on April 5 and Aug. 2, offering a much-needed reprieve for the industry. Kyle Larson fans are in for a letdown, with the Knoxville Nationals that he consistently contests scheduled on the same day as the Richmond Raceway night race.
There’s little to note for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. The tour will mirror Cup for the majority of its races, stealing the spotlight solely for another Rockingham Speedway race weekend during the first Cup off weekend in April. Beyond that, the biggest takeaways are two tracks missing from the calendar: North Wilkesboro Speedway and Portland International Raceway, the latter whose exit leaves the Pacific Northwest without a single NASCAR national series race.
The biggest surprise of the schedule reveal came from the Craftsman Truck Series. As part of a cross-promotional play from FOX Sports, which airs both series in their entirety, the tour will accompany the NTT IndyCar Series for its season-opening Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on Feb. 28. It will be the Truck Series’ first street race.
Beyond that, the Truck Series continues to keep its own identity. The tour will join O’Reilly at Rockingham before holding summer standalone races at both Lime Rock Park and Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.
