IndyCar Silly Season Lights Up With Power, Herta Moves (IndyCar)
Just days into one of the longest offseasons in sports, the NTT IndyCar Series field has already been turned on its head.
The first big domino to fall came on Tuesday morning, as Team Penske finally confirmed the worst-kept secret in the paddock. After 17 years together, the company and veteran driver Will Power have parted ways.
The Australian’s exit was rumored through the stretch run of the season, despite him having a company-best 42 wins with Penske and finishing top among the company’s three drivers in the 2025 standings. The only surprise with Tuesday’s announcement was that Power himself seemed up for the change.
“It’s been the honor of my life to drive for Roger and the Penske organization,” Power said in a statement. “We have accomplished so much together, and I will always be grateful for my time with the team and my teammates who have supported me along the way. After much consideration, I felt like a change for me was the right move at this time.”
When it first went out, the news left the two-time champion’s future uncertain. But his future was made apparent within 36 hours.
The rapid turnaround was aided by another rumored story proving true. Cadillac F1 announced Wednesday that Andretti Global’s Colton Herta has been named a test driver for the team in its 2026 debut. The nine-time IndyCar winner is the third team signing, following the confirmation of full-time drivers Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Pérez.
In the short term, Herta’s driving duties will be focused on simulator work, testing and car development efforts. But the 25-year-old’s arrival comes with bigger purpose. With a lifelong goal of competing in Formula 1, Herta is expected to contest the 2026 Formula 2 season while making practice appearances for the F1 team, with aim of securing enough FIA superlicense points to be F1-eligible for 2027.
With 34 points earned between 2024 and 2025 in IndyCar, Herta should be able to gain the necessary points by contesting five or more F1 free practice sessions. He could also bolster his chances with a finish of 10th or better in the F2 standings.
“The easy thing would be to stay in IndyCar,” Herta said on the Off Track With Hinch and Rossi podcast. “But for me, it’s a dream of mine. I want to fight for my dream, and that is to try to make it to Formula 1.”
Herta chasing his dream opened up his No. 26 in IndyCar, but it wasn’t available for long. Andretti Global confirmed Wednesday that Power will take over the ride, pairing with Kyle Kirkwood and Marcus Ericsson to complete the team’s full-time lineup.
"I have tremendous respect for Kyle and Marcus," Power said in a press release. "I’ve had some great battles racing against them, and I think we’re going to make a great combination as teammates.
"This is a whole new chapter for me. I have to say that sometimes a change of scenery and a fresh start is very energizing. I can’t wait."
With Power and Herta’s futures all-but assured, there are still a few key dominoes to fall. David Malukas is expected to take Power’s place at Penske. It’s uncertain who might fill in for Malukas at A.J. Foyt Racing if that proves true, but it could be Rinus Veekay.
The Dutchman confirmed Tuesday that he won’t be returning to Dale Coyne Racing next year, exiting despite a solid 14th-place championship effort with the team highlighted by a runner-up run in Toronto.
“I want to thank Dale Coyne Racing and in particular Dale and Gail for the opportunity they gave me to re-establish myself in 2025," Veekay said in a release. "This year was genuinely the most enjoyable year in my career as an IndyCar driver.”

Judge Bell denies injunction request for 23XI, FRM (NASCAR Cup)
The teams had hoped to secure the injunction and operate as chartered entrants for the remainder of the 2025 season. Wednesday’s loss means they will instead continue to operate as open teams for the rest of the year, receiving less money than the chartered companies.
Both organizations will be safe from missing any races due to recent rule changes by NASCAR. The sanctioning body has also promised not to “issue, sell, convey, or lease” the six charters being disputed as part of the suit. Those moves helped swing the injunction request in its favor.
“What will happen for the 2026 racing season will remain unsettled for everyone involved in the NASCAR Cup Series until after trial,” Judge Bell wrote. “Therefore, there is no irreparable harm with respect to the loss of “Charter rights” for the remainder of the 2025 Cup Series.”
Judge Bell also added that “NASCAR has agreed that it will in effect maintain the status quo with respect to those earlier Charter spots by limiting the number of new Charters issued to four” and that “the 2025 Charter Agreements give NASCAR the authority to create up to 40 Charter Members, so temporarily adding Charters 37-40 will not irreparably harm Plaintiffs.”
“In other words, so long as the disputed Charters are available for the Court to potentially use as part of the final relief granted to Plaintiffs if they are successful at trial, then Plaintiffs are not irreparably harmed and no preliminary injunction is necessary or, indeed, permitted,” Bell wrote.
Jeffrey Kessler, attorney for both 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports, said in a Wednesday statement that the teams are “grateful that Judge Bell has made clear that the status quo is being maintained — protecting my clients’ rights to regain their charters if they prevail at trial and ensuring their ability to continue racing through the 2025 season based on NASCAR’s commitments.”
NASCAR noted that it welcomes the decision, “which brings much-needed clarity to the remainder of the 2025 NASCAR season.”
With Wednesday’s decision made, the trial is likely to fade into the background over the remainder of the postseason, pending any settlement between the two sides. The case is scheduled to go to a jury trial starting on Dec. 1.

IndyCar shifts Canadian race from Toronto to Markham (IndyCar)
The early-offseason IndyCar changes weren’t just reserved for drivers. One of the tour’s consistent races will also see a change of location next year.
IndyCar confirmed Thursday that its annual trip to Canada won’t come in Toronto next season. Instead the Honda Grand Prix will move a short jog north, to the town of Markham, Ontario.
The race will take place on Aug. 14-16, with drivers competing on a 12-turn, 2.19-mile street circuit that features a tight hairpin. Series officials reached a five-year deal with promoter Green Savoree Toronto, meaning the event should take place through 2030.
"It is crucial for INDYCAR to continue to reach our fans in Canada, and we simply cannot wait for this new chapter to begin next year," Penske Entertainment President and CEO Mark Miles said in a series release.
Markham’s arrival comes amid growing challenges for the event’s predecessor in Toronto. Logistics around the event have become more expensive and tricky over time, with aging streets and increased development in the area adding risk and extra hurdles. With the World Cup at the Expo Centre area in 2026, the time was right to make a change.
The Canadian date is the seventh and latest to be announced for the 2026 season, following traditional races like Indianapolis, Long Beach at St. Petersburg, along with the March street race in Arlington, Texas.

Number of the Day: 7.56
If recent history is any indicator, this should be a good weekend for Team Penske. The group’s three drivers have a collective average finish of 7.56 in the Cup Series’ three races at World Wide Technology Raceway, with Logano best of the group with three top-fives and an average finish of 3.0. And what’s crazy is that the number should be even better. Had Ryan Blaney not ran out of fuel in 2024, the group’s average finish would collectively be 5.0.
