In the biggest silly season story to hit Sprint Car racing in many years,

Donny Schatz’s lengthy tenure with Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) has come to a shocking, sudden end.
TSR announced Tuesday that it and Schatz had parted ways, effective immediately. Kerry Madsen will take over the No. 15 for the remainder of the 2025 racing season, starting Friday at Ogilvie Raceway with the World of Outlaws. There will be a one-off replacement
for next weekend’s race at North Dakota, with Madsen completing his final Knoxville race weekend for Vermeer Motorsports.
Thus ends one of the discipline’s most iconic combinations. Schatz has competed for TSR since 2008, racking up 234 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series victories and eight series championships, with nine wins in the Knoxville Nationals. He’s been the face of
the Outlaws in the tour’s modern era.
Many expected Schatz to continue with TSR until his eventual retirement. But a poor run of performance led team owner Tony Stewart to make the difficult decision to pull the plug. Schatz is winless on the year and had to make a pair of rallies in Friday’s Hard
Knox feature and Saturday’s B-main to qualify for his 27th-straight Knoxville Nationals feature last weekend.
“The achievements we’ve accomplished together are something that I’ll always be proud of, but in the past few years we’ve weathered changes in the sport and our performance hasn’t been to the level that both Donny and I expect,” Stewart said in a press release.
"We’re both competitors to our core and we both hold ourselves to a high standard of performance that we’ve struggled to obtain. Making a change now gives each of us the chance to reset and refocus before 2026.”
It’s uncertain what lies in the future for Schatz. The North Dakota native just turned 48 and sits sixth in the World of Outlaws standings, 506 points behind David Gravel. He has eight top-fives and 26 top-10s on the year.

Connor Zilisch confirms surgery on broken collarbone (NASCAR Xfinity)
“Wanted to give everyone a quick update,” Zilisch said. “Had surgery on my collarbone this morning to get a plate and screws to help with the healing process. Been a tough few days for me mentally, but all the love you guys have shown has certainly helped.
Thank you.”
The 19-year-old Trackhouse Racing prospect was injured Saturday when he fell off his car while celebrating a Watkins Glen International win in victory lane. Zilisch was transported to a local hospital, where it was confirmed that he suffered a broken collarbone.
With the surgery complete, his road to recovery begins in full. Zilisch currently has no timetable to return. He currently competes in the Xfinity Series, where he sits atop the points for JR Motorsports. The series is off this weekend, but has three races
in the ensuing weeks before the playoffs begin.
An early return would be beneficial to Zilisch’s regular season champonship ambitions. But the Chevrolet prospect will need to weigh the risk of further injury ahead of what’s expected to be his debut Cup Series season in 2026.

LaJoie to finish Truck season with Spire, Perez de Lara moving to Niece (NASCAR Trucks)
The game of musical chairs continued in the Craftsman Truck Series this week, as both Spire Motorsports and Niece Motorsports made driver changes.
Spire
announced Monday that it had parted ways with rookie Andres Perez de Lara, effective immediately. It will replace the 20-year-old with the veteran Corey LaJoie, fielding the Charlotte native for the final eight
races of the season and shifting owner points from the No. 07 to the No. 77 entry.
The 33-year-old will be making his seventh start in the series, two months after his finished a career-best fifth in Spire’s No. 07 in his only prior appearance on the year.
Niece Motorsports will take advantage of the shift and bring in Perez de Lara, fielding the Mexican for the remainder of the season with backing from Telcel, Claro and Infinitum.
“Overall, I’m really excited about the upcoming races with Niece Motorsports,” Pérez de Lara said in a statement. “Making a change mid-season always has its challenges, but the team and I are working hard to be 100% by the time Richmond comes. I’m really focusing
on having a good race there and feel very motivated with how the team has treated me. I feel the team is also motivated with having me there as well.”
Perez de Lara came to the Truck Series from the ARCA Menards Series, having won rookie of the year honors and the championship with Rev Racing ins successive seasons. He currently sits 17th in points heading into the regular season finale at Richmond Raceway,
with a best finish of seventh at Martinsville Speedway in March.
