1) Cleetus McFarland denied approval for O’Reilly run at Talladega (NASCAR O’Reilly)
Garrett Mitchell, known as YouTube star Cleetus McFarland, survived to the checkered flag in his first NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series start at Rockingham Speedway. But his hopes of continuing on to rejoin the series at Talladega Superspeedway are going to have to wait.
NASCAR confirmed Tuesday night that Mitchell hasn’t been cleared to race on the O’Reilly Series’ biggest and fastest tracks. Mitchell himself also announced the news on social media.
“We’re all huge Cleetus fans. We all watch his videos and are certainly very appreciative of everything he’s done in our sport and will continue to do in our sport,” John Probst, NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer, said of the decision in a statement. “He is approved right now for O’Reilly Series short tracks, which means he’s good for all of ARCA, all of (NASCAR’s third-tier Truck Series), and then O’Reilly up through the short tracks.
“We’d like to see more out of Cleetus in the short tracks. So we’re not saying no, but there is more that we would like to see out of Cleetus before we would approve him for Talladega.”
Mitchell has made his YouTube fame in the motorsports world, but has minimal oval racing experience. Despite that, his fan-friendly style and significant following have afforded him increasingly grand NASCAR opportunities, which he’s been keen to take advantage of given his passion for the sport.
The biggest to date is a limited opportunity with Richard Childress Racing in the O’Reilly Series. Mitchell hopes to compete on the superspeedways, but requires NASCAR approval to do so. That’s what led to the Rockingham appearance, where he finished six laps down in 32nd after a challenging race that included a soft spin and a few other close calls.
The Rockingham appearance was just Mitchell’s second in NASCAR national series competition. His first came in February’s Craftsman Truck Series opener at Daytona International Speedway, where he qualified well but crashed out after just six laps.
Mitchell has found better success in ARCA competition, including a fourth-place run in Saturday’s ARCA Menards Series East race on the same Rockingham oval.
“(I) made my O’Reilly’s debut last Saturday with hopes of getting approval for Talladega, but they did not see enough,” Mitchell said in a video on Instagram. “Granted, it was a pretty hectic race. I tried to pass someone three-wide on the third lap, spun out, spun out a few more times. Didn’t crash or crash anybody, but still, it was pretty hectic.”

Doug Barnes Jr. set for CARS return after suspension amended (Short Tracks)
Barnes was issued the suspension for a controversial run-in with Craftsman Truck Series regular Mini Tyrrell, the pair trading intentional contract in an intense battle during the tour’s recent trip to Wake County Speedway. Both drivers were placed on probation, with Barnes issued a suspension that would’ve kept him out of Saturday’s race at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.
But an independent panel altered the penalty Monday, deciding to have the suspension continue only through Friday night. That will keep Barnes from participating in a Thursday open test and Friday practice, but he’ll be able to join the CARS Late Model Stock Tour for Saturday’s practice, qualifying and race.
Barnes will remain on probation through the end of the year. Monday’s decision came from former NASCAR Cup Series race director David Hoots, former ASA STARS technical director Freddie Query, Wilson Motorsports general manager Bond Suss and Team Penske manager Jefferson Hodges.

Super GT calls off Malaysia race due to fuel concerns (Sports Cars)
The ongoing concerns over fuel shortages around the country have reportedly claimed a planned race on the Super GT calendar.
Sportscar365’s Jamie Klein reported Monday that Super GT has called off its planned trip to Sepang International Circuit at the request of the Malaysian government, which was a major supporter of the tour’s visit in 2025.
The cause? Hopes to minimize the number of large-scale events that aren’t of national significance amid long-term concerns over fuel shortages. This is due to the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran, which has only escalated in recent weeks. Many races in the region have been postponed or outright canceled, from a pair of Formula 1 grands prix to the FIA World Endurance Championship’s Qatar 1812km.
The elimination of the Malaysia race weekend would drop the 2026 Super GT season to just seven rounds, creating a gap of three months after May’s trip to Fuji Speedway if no local replacement options are found. The next race would fall at Fuji Speedway in August.
This news hasn’t been made official at the time of writing. But with a race coming this weekend at Okayama International Circuit, an announcement is likely to come soon.

Craftsman Truck Series: It came down to a tense late battle between a driver and his former team. But in the end, the driver prevailed.
