The Sprint Cup car is about to lose its braces. Beginning with the 2011 season, NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton said a new front valance and splitter combination should eliminate the need for the braces that hold the splitter in place under the current design. -- "It will be less utilitarian-looking," Pemberton said. "It'll have a little more style in it, and I think people will like that. As we work forward, that's not the last change. We're looking on some stuff that actually has to coincide with the manufacturers and their introduction of new cars to sell." -- Pemberton said the current design, introduced in 2007, is due for an upgrade. And with the implementation of the new Nationwide Series chassis this season, NASCAR's research and development team went to work on trying to add some pizzazz -- and manufacturer identity -- to the Cup cars. ...Daily Headlines

Les Richter, who played significant roles in the evolution of both NASCAR and professional football, died Saturday morning at the age of 79. NASCAR president Mike Helton made the announcement during the Camping World Truck Series drivers' meeting at Michigan International Speedway. Richter was born in Fresno, Calif., in 1930 and was a two-time football All-American at California. After a two-year stint in the Army, Richter was drafted by the New York Yanks, then traded to the Los Angeles Rams for 11 players. During a nine-year NFL career, Richter played linebacker, middle guard and also was the team's place-kicker. He was named to the Pro Bowl eight times.
After retiring from football, Richter worked as president of Riverside International Raceway, then became NASCAR's director of competition. Helton, who replaced Richter in that role in 1994, talked about the man everyone called "The Coach." "Kind of backhandedly, he taught me to be firm but fair," Helton said. "It's obvious to me why Bill [France Jr.] had Les in that role. He passed on to me the principle of being firm but fair, but also how to go about doing that." At the time of his passing, Richter was vice president of special projects for International Speedway Corp., based at Auto Club Speedway, where he played a dominant role in the development of that track. Arrangements are pending. ...Daily Headlines
"Les Richter will be missed by the entire NASCAR community and always remembered for all he did for the sport on all levels, especially as Vice President of Competition, his dedication to NASCAR's short track racing program and promoting the sport on the west coast," said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France. "Les, a tireless worker, was one of NASCAR's most respected officials and one of my father's most trusted lieutenants. Our respect and condolences go out to the Richter family." ...Daily Headlines
Les “Coach” Richter, who was instrumental in the development of California Speedway, overseeing the project for Roger Penske from the demolition of the historic Kaiser Steel Mill, to its transformation into a first-class racing facility, passed away quietly this morning at the age of 79. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date. -- Coach's name was synonymous with west coast motorsports, somewhat ironic for a man who became famous in football, but fitting for a man who could charge through any obstacle and was larger than life,” said Auto Club Speedway President Gillian Zucker. As a colleague, his knowledge, passion and enthusiasm for the industry was beyond compare. As a mentor, he was always there with sage advice and a hug that would knock the wind out of you but would leave no doubt how much he cared. He was a special friend, and we will miss him dearly." -- Richter recently served as vice-president of special projects for International Speedway Corporation, the parent company of Auto Club Speedway. He was based at Auto Club Speedway, a two-mile, state-of-the-art superspeedway near Fontana, California. The current trophy for the Auto Club 500 is named the “Richter Trophy” as a lasting tribute to his contributions to Auto Club Speedway and the world of motorsports. ...More

· Ford to switch to Mustang in 2011? NASCAR is expected to change the shape of the front bumper on all Sprint Cup cars for the 2011 season to help improve brand identity for its auto manufacturers. For Ford, that could eventually lead to a change in what nameplate it puts on its car, with a possible move from the Fusion currently being used to the Mustang. But first, Ford officials want to see how the changes affect the front of the Cup car. NASCAR Vice President Robin Pemberton said Friday the sanctioning body is close to approving
the final specifications for the new front bumper. The change will be in the bottom half of the bumper, which currently has a rectangular indentation where the bottom half does not stick out as far as the top half. The new front bumper will be more curved, and the change would eliminate the need for the front splitter braces because much of that area of empty space will now be part of the new curved lower half. "We're working on it we're close on that," Pemberton said. "It's just time for a style change. We've been working on it for about a year now. We're working on [the brand identity] with the manufacturers." Some of what is being changed to the Cup car is being used on the new Nationwide car, which is going to be run for four races in 2010 and then full-time in 2011. Ford and Dodge are introducing muscle-car nameplates (Mustang and Challenger) in conjunction with the new Nationwide car. Toyota and Chevrolet are keeping the Camry and Impala
nameplates. Ford Racing's North America Motorsports Director Jamie Allison said Thursday that if everything goes well in implementing the Mustang into the Nationwide Series, as well as the changes to the front bumper of the Cup car, he would consider changing the Ford nameplate for Cup to Mustang. "We want to see more brand identity in the cars," Allison said Thursday during an event at the Henry Ford Museum near Detroit. "We've been asking NASCAR because we've liked what transpired in the Nationwide." The manufacturers seem ready for the change and have run testing with the cars in simulation and wind tunnels.(SceneDaily)(6-11-2010)

Replacing the unpopular rear wing with the spoiler was the first step, according to Pemberton. So what will the new front bumper look like? According to Pemberton, it'll incorporate a lot
of the Nationwide design. That could mean more changes to make the current generic chassis a little more manufacturer-specific, Pemberton said, perhaps as early as 2012 or '13.(NASCAR.com), see the Nationwide Series COT and the 'splitter' on the Nationwide Series COT page.(6-13-2010)

“Praying for Karson” Toyota Camry Brought to Life by PRISM Motorsports
Cornelius, NC (June 9, 2010)- PRISM Motorsports will welcome Michael Waltrip back behind the wheel of the No. 55 for the fourth time this season at Infineon Raceway on Sunday, June 20. Racing for a special cause, the PRISM Motorsports machine Waltrip will pilot has a unique paint scheme thanks to the Toyota Racing “Sponsafy Your Ride Contest” and the grand prize winner, Fay Knape of Danbury, Texas.
The contest focused on fans creating their own special paint schemes, with the winner’s design to be featured on the PRISM Motorsports NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Toyota Camry. Over 77,500 fans submitted designs in the contest, and fans cast more than one million votes for their favorite. From the top nine popular votes, the top five finalists were chosen by a panel of Toyota executives and NASCAR personalities.
The winning artwork honors Knape’s one-year-old grandson, Karson, who was born with Neuroendocrine Cell Hyperplasia in Infancy (NEHI), a rare lung disease. “Praying for Karson”, Knape’s design, features highlights of the outdoors where she hopes her grandson can one day play without his oxygen tank that he is required to wear for his condition.
Randy Humphrey and Phil Parsons, owners of PRISM Motorsports, are excited to field the No. 55 “Praying for Karson” Toyota Camry and its special paint scheme for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at the 1.99 mile road course.
“PRISM Motorsports is very proud to be a part of the Sponsafy Your Ride Contest and we’re looking forward to Michael Waltrip getting back in the car,” Co- owner Humphrey expressed. “This is a great opportunity for us to grow our organization and raise awareness about a great cause at the same time.”
“Securing sponsorship for this season has been tough, so this opportunity with Toyota will give us a chance to really showcase the hard work our guys have been putting in all year long,” Humphrey added.
-More-
Waltrip brings 19 previous starts to Infineon Raceway, and is also the current record holder for the most laps completed at the California road course with 1,700. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series veteran hopes to keep that record alive by running all 110 laps in a competitive fashion next Sunday.
“I have so much fun working with PRISM Motorsports, and this opportunity with Toyota and the ‘Sponsafy Your Ride Contest’ helps the team legitimize what they’re trying to do,” Waltrip noted. “I’m thankful for Toyota and all they do for the fans, and this contest just shows once again how much Toyota appreciates those fans. I’m proud to represent Karson and his family and it’s really neat that we’ve brought to life a fan’s dream design.”
Waltrip previously raced for PRISM at Bristol Motor Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway, and will race this weekend at Michigan International Speedway to fill in for Michael McDowell who will be racing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series at Kentucky Speedway. For the running of the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega in April, Waltrip ran with a different special paint scheme in celebration of Aaron’s 55th year in business.
PRISM Motorsports will also field the No. 66 Toyota Camry for Dave Blaney in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway. Qualifying is set for 3:35 pm PST on Friday, June 18, with the green flag scheduled to drop at 12:00 pm PST on Sunday, June 20.

· "Dash for Cash": Saturday night's Meijer 300 at Kentucky Speedway is the second of four Nationwide Insurance "Dash 4 Cash" bonus events that pays an extra $25,000 to the race winner. Kevin Harvick captured a $25,000 bonus from Nationwide Insurance by winning at Nashville Superspeedway in April. There's a good chance the bonus will be distributed again this weekend. Two-time defending race champion Joey Logano is the only driver ineligible for this weekend's bonus bucks. But 42 other drivers are chomping at the bit to pick up the extra cash. "That bonus is really something," veteran driver Jason Leffler said Friday afternoon prior to opening practice. "But a win is a win. That's the most important thing. An extra $25,000 adds a lot to the pot. I'm pretty excited it."Coming here to Kentucky, it's an awesome track. They fill the stands and people are enthusiast about their NASCAR racing. We'll put a good show on for them (Saturday night), for sure." · Australian driver to make NASCAR debut: Australian Owen Kelly is scheduled to make his NASCAR debut when he races for Baker Curb Racing in the Bucyrus 200 at the Road America road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin in the United States on June 17-19 next week. Kelly will make his first NASCAR start in the second-tier Nationwide Series at the impressive Road America circuit, a fast and undulating track regarded at the North American equivalent of Australia's Mount Panorama circuit in the town of Bathurst, New South Wales. The 33-year-old will drive the #27 Ford Fusion of Baker Curb Racing in the 50-lap event. Kelly becomes the ninth Australian to race in a NASCAR championship division and follows in the footsteps of fellow Tasmanian Marcos Ambrose, who has used his similar background in karting, Formula Ford and V8 Supercars to great effect to claim two Nationwide Series wins at the Watkins Glen road course since moving to NASCAR in 2006. Kelly has raced for Dale Earnhardt Jr's JR Motorsports late model team in both 2008 and 2009, collecting race victories as he learned oval track racing after growing up in Australia on road course circuits. Originally from the town of Devonport in Tasmania, Kelly will also race V8 Supercars later this year for Jack Daniel's Racing in the endurance events at the Phillip Island and Bathurst circuits, where the longer races require two drivers per car.(BAM Media)(6-11-2010)
· Crew Chief changes for the #16 team UPDATE2: Ben Leslie has been named interim crew chief for the Roush Fenway Racing #16 Nationwide Series team, a team spokesman has confirmed. He replaces Eddie Pardue. Leslie, who started the year as crew chief for Ricky Stenhouse Jr., had more recently been overseeing the Nationwide program for Roush Fenway. Pardue, a Nationwide Series crew chief for more than four years and an employee at Roush Fenway for seven, is no longer with the organization.(Scene Daily)(5-27-2010)
UPDATE: Roush Fenway crew chief Eddie Pardue was fired last week after his crew's involvement in a fight at a Daytona strip club. Multiple sources confirmed Nationwide Series veteran Pardue was released once management learned of the incident, which occurred in the middle of a Nationwide Car of Tomorrow test at Daytona. Sources say the crew for his #16 Roush Fenway Ford went to the club one night during the test, where a physical altercation with several patrons ensued. No charges were filed, but once word spread of the fight an undisclosed number of crewmen were fired, along with Pardue despite him not being in attendance at the club. One source suggested Roush was making an example with his dismissal in the wake of a miserable season
during which their Cup and Nationwide teams have gone winless. Pardue had been a Roush employee for seven years and a Nationwide crew chief for the past four.(Frontstretch)(6-5-2010)
UPDATE 2: Rick Viers will be the new crew chief for the #16 Nationwide Series car, effective immediately. Roush sources say that the veteran crew chief will add stability to the #16 program, which currently has a rotating set of drivers. Viers was most recently with Baker Curb Racing, working primarily with Greg Biffle who is a part of Roush's Cup program. Viers was also a crew chief for Red Bull Racing at the Sprint Cup level, but enjoyed his most success with Richard Childress Racing's Nationwide program.(FoxSports)(6-11-2010)

Rookie Mikey Kile Wins at Michigan |
|
(BROOKLYN, Mich. - June 11, 2010) - Mikey Kile had seen this race before. Six days ago, in fact, at Pocono. This time, the driver of the No. 25 Sears Auto Center/DieHard Toyota came up on the other side of the tale, winning the Racing for Wildlife 200 along the way. ( |

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. (June 12, 2010) – Clay Rogers claimed his fourth victory in six USAR Pro Cup Series races this season in Saturday night's Strutmasters.com 250 at South Boston Speedway, as one challenger after another fell by the wayside.
Pole winner Jeff Agnew led twice for 91 laps in his Team 7 Motorsports Ford, including the first 90, before pulling behind the wall on lap 180 with a mechanical problem. The Floyd, Va., driver, who was running second when he exited the race, finished 14th.
Caleb Holman, who was second in the point standings entering the event, exited on lap 156, also with a mechanical problem in his Food Country USA Chevrolet.
In fact, Rogers was the only driver with a position in the top five in the point standings who finished the race. John Gibson, who started on the outside of the front row, was third in the standings entering the event. However, he had to take his MitiGator Ford behind the wall on lap 51. Benny Gordon, who was fifth in the standings, exited the event in his Samuel Metals Ford on lap 218.
“I feel bad for Jeff Agnew right now,” said Rogers, who led the final 118 laps. “He probably had the best car here tonight. I'd say most definitely he had the best car. I hate he had a problem, but he and his team have been working real hard and they're catching up.”
Rogers cited his crew's pit stop during the third caution period as playing a critical role in his 27th career victory. The Mooresville, N.C., driver was the first lead-lap driver off pit road during the yellow flag. For the restart, he was second to Matt Lofton, who didn't pit. Lofton led laps 130-132 on the 0.400-mile track before Rogers scooted under him and into the No. 1 position for good on lap 133. It was the only time Rogers led during the event.
“It was so hard to pass out there,” said Rogers, who averaged 74.290 mph in the race that was slowed by four caution flags for 23 laps. “It was so hot and greasy. I was just glad my guys got me out in front, in clean air. That clean air on the nose helps a lot.
“We knew right off the bat, early in the race, that we didn't have the car that we needed and nobody panicked. We made some pretty big adjustments on that fuel stop and another pretty big swing at it when we made a tire stop. Luckily, we got it good enough that we were holding off Jeff (Agnew) for a little while, but we were just preventing the inevitable. He was coming.”
Lofton had to settle for the runner-up position Saturday night, 2.708 seconds behind Rogers, but it was the Roxboro, N.C., native's best finish this season.
“At the beginning of the race, we started losing voltage in it,” said Lofton, who had to come from a lap down in his Strutmasters.com Chevrolet to record his second straight top 5. “We came down pit road on the first caution after it stalled out. We had to change the battery in it. We lost one lap there, but we were able to race our way back. We had to stay out to keep our lead lap, so we couldn't pit when everybody else came in and took fuel. We knew that was going to hurt us a little bit, but it was more important for us to get our lap back so we could start racing.
“We came in, took our fuel on the next caution and we were the only ones on the lead lap that came in and took tires at the end of the race. We had to come from the back three different times. We made it hard on ourselves.”
Brandon Ward, the race's defending champion, claimed third in his Heritage Truck Centers Chevrolet for his first top-5 this season.
“The car just kept getting tighter and tighter as the race went on,” Ward said after the event that had four lead changes among four drivers. “The car was fairly decent early, but it was still tight. We made three adjustments and it really just didn't do what it was supposed to do.
“We've been working real close with our teammate A.J. Frank, he's run a few races and we've been trying to share some notes this year. I think we're making gains on it. We've got a little ways to go to run with Clay, but we're making gains.
Rounding out the top five, respectively, were Logan Ruffin in his Turner Motorsports Chevrolet, and Chase Elliott in his Aaron's Ford. The event was Ruffin's second at South Boston Speedway and Elliott's inaugural event at the historical short track.

Weather Suspends NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Qualifying At Mosport
Session Set To Resume Sunday Prior To Race
Two groups of cars of 13 cars each were set to qualify - NASCAR road racing style – Saturday afternoon at the 2.459-mile road course. The first group was able to complete its session and Peter Klutt recorded the fastest lap at 86.377 seconds. Trevor Seibert was second-fastest at 87.694 seconds.
Toward the end of the first session rain, which had been problematic throughout the day, began to fall in the area and the track became too slick to send out the second group, which includes previous Mosport pole winners Andrew Ranger and Scott Steckly.
Sunday’s schedule will now be modified as the second group will get its shot to qualifying in advance of the Vortex Brake Pads 200 and will take the track at 9:25 a.m. ET.
Steckly and Ranger both look to be serious contenders for the pole based on results from practice earlier in the day on Saturday. Steckly posted a fast lap of 84.282 seconds and Ranger came in at 84.471. They were followed on the speed chart by JR Fitzpatrick (84.537), Jeff Lapcevich (84.918) and Kerry Micks (85.101).
All five were under the previous track qualifying record of 85.119 seconds set by Ranger in 2009.
The Vortex Brake Pads 200 still is set to take the green flag at 1:30 p.m. ET Sunday.
