               William Byron Pulls Off Clutch First Win at Daytona to Secure Playoff Spot

William Byron was able to get past Denny Hamlin on a Green-White-Checker restart Saturday night and managed to hold off the pack to win the Coke Zero Sugar 400 for his first career Cup victory.  Chase Elliott was second, followed by Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr. and Bubba Wallace.

               Matt DiBenedetto Limps Into Playoffs, Makes Postseason for 1st Time in Career

Wood Brothers Racing's Matt DiBenedetto spent the vast majority of the season in playoff position.  However, a recent swoon brought him to the precipice of elimination in Daytona.  A 12th-place finish allowed him to claim the last spot in the playoffs on points.

               Jimmie Johnson Disappointed to Miss 2020 Playoffs

The race for the final spots in the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs came down to three drivers.  William Byron won to lock in.  Matt DiBenedetto finished 12th, while Jimmie Johnson crashed late, finished 17th and got eliminated.  Naturally, he's quite bummed out.

               Justin Haley Wins Chaotic Xfinity Race at Daytona After His Teammates Crash

Kaulig Racing dominated Friday night's Wawa 250 powered by Coca-Cola in Daytona.  AJ Allmendinger was leading until contact with Ross Chastain triggered a crash on the final lap.  Justin Haley skittered through to claim his second win of the year.  Gray Gaulding was second, then Chase Briscoe, Riley Herbst and Harrison Burton.

               Kaulig Racing Teammates Clash on Final Lap in Daytona

As noted above, heck went down late Friday night as Kaulig Racing teammates Ross Chastain and AJ Allmendinger had contact in Turn 3 on the final lap while racing for the win, causing a crash that collected Michael Annett and Austin Cindric.

               Sheldon Creed Bags 3rd Win of 2020 with Gateway Triumph

GMS Racing's Sheldon Creed got past teammate Sam Mayer on a late restart and held on to claim his third win of 2020 at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.  Brett Moffitt was second, then Austin Hill, Mayer and Stewart Friesen.

               Ty Gibbs Wins ARCA Race at Gateway for Second Straight Year

Ty Gibbs snagged the lead from Michael Self on Lap 11 Saturday and held on to win the ARCA Menards Series Dutch Boy 150 at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.  Chandler Smith was second, then Sam Mayer, Max McLaughlin and Jesse Love.

               Scott Dixon Earns 50th Career Win with Gateway Victory

An ultra-quick pit stop got Scott Dixon the lead late Saturday.  From there, he held off Takuma Sato to win the first INDYCAR race of the weekend.  Patricio O'Ward was third, while Colton Herta and Marcus Ericsson rounded out the top five.

Trevor Bayne making NASCAR return with Niece Motorsports (NASCAR Trucks)

Less than half a year from the 10th anniversary of his shock Daytona 500 win, former NASCAR Cup Series competitor Trevor Bayne is set to make his first NASCAR start since 2018 in the Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. 

Niece Motorsports announced Monday that Bayne will pilot the No. 40 Chevrolet with sponsor support from Plan B Sales and Proceller8. It will be his first start in NASCAR’s third tour, and his first run in any NASCAR series since the fall 2018 Texas Motor Speedway race where he made his final Cup run with Roush Fenway Racing. 

“After almost two years of being out of the seat, I’m so excited and grateful for another chance to go racing,” said Bayne. “The call from Niece Motorsports to get back behind the wheel at Darlington was unexpected and came together really fast. They have a great group and a lot of potential with their program. I’m looking forward to working with everyone there and going back racing this weekend!”

The Truck race will be something of a Roush reunion, with former RFR drivers Greg Biffle and David Ragan also scheduled to compete. Biffle will compete for GMS Racing, with Ragan competing for DGR-Crosley.

P2: Teams concerned over KTM ‘super engine’ (MotoGP)

With fall quickly approaching, MotoGP teams have begun to set their sights on the 2021 season. Many manufacturers are nervous about KTM and what could be a “super engine” that is utilized next year. 

KTM and Aprilia are permitted by current regulations to be exempt from the engine development freeze currently seen on Honda, Yamaha, Ducati and Suzuki, though all manufacturers agreed to a freeze on development in the wake the of COVID-19 pandemic. 

All teams appeared to be observing the freeze, but Motorsport has since reported that KTM will be allowed to develop its engines for next year after losing its results-based concessions following wins by Brad Binder and Miguel Oliveria. A source told the outlet that “we believe that KTM is preparing a super engine for 2021. “Unlike the rest, they are going to be able to open and touch up the engine without any limitation. In fact, they can make it (a) whole (new one) if they want.”

KTM was already in a different position than most manufacturers, with the original MSMA proposal allowing the team to utilize two extra engines heading into 2021 after it raised concerns about the durability of its current engine designs. That news, mixed with the current rumors of the team’s work toward 2021, have soured opinions of KTM within the paddock.

: Spyker set for potential sports car return (Sports Cars)

Former FIA World Endurance Championship competitors SMP Racing and Spyker Ltd. are working on a “far reaching collaboration” that will reportedly see the entities participate in sports car racing. 

Spyker has been quiet since its 2014 bankruptcy, but with the collaboration of SMP founder Boris Rotenberg, Milan Morady SA’s Michail Pessis and R-Company GmbH, the group plan to launch three road car models that includes the Spyker C8 Preliator. 

One intention with the move is reportedly to make Spyker an “important player” in the super-sports car world, giving the brand its first return to sports car racing since a 2010 campaign in the European Le Mans Series and 24 Hours of Le Mans. 

“Since Boris Rotenberg and I ordered our first Spyker almost a decade ago we passionately fell in love with the beauty and craftsmanship of these hand-built sports cars,” Pessis said. “As of 2015 the cooperation with Spyker intensified through Milan Morady which now culminates in the collaboration agreement announced today.

“Moreover BR Engineering and Milan Morady have for the past few years already been involved in the development and production of a number of Spyker C8 Ailerons in so-called Limited Edition BR configuration in our German facilities.”

Time will tell if these plans come to fruition. But if they do, Spyker and SMP appear poised to work together on competition in the “international race arena.”
