McDowell, Phil Parsons Racing Pick Up Charlotte Sponsor
After running largely unsponsored and resorting to starting-and-parking for the
first part of the season, Michael McDowell and his Phil Parsons-owned No. 98
team have picked up a sponsor for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor
Speedway.
Presbyterian Healthcare will adorn McDowell's car as part of its drive toward
promoting the importance of regular health screenings. Along with
Presbyterian logos on the blue, green and white Ford Fusion, the back of the
car will feature
www.HealthPitStop.org,
which provides more information on health screenings and can help visitors to
find a nearby doctor.
"Michael... believes in what Presbyterian Healthcare is doing to help make
our communities healthier," said Mark Billings, president and CEO of
Presbyterian Healthcare. "He has used Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville
for care several times so this partnership is more personal for him."
Bell Returns to Cup With Green Smoke, FAS Lane
So far in 2012, T.J. Bell's main focus has been the Nationwide Series,
where he and Make Motorsports have made all ten races so far and currently sits
18th in the overall point standings. At Charlotte this weekend, he will
get his first opportunity of the season to pull double duty.
Bell and occasional sponsor Green Smoke, a brand of electronic cigarette, will
team up to run the Coca-Cola 600 in the Sprint Cup Series, driving the No. 32
for FAS Lane Racing -- a team for which he drove in the season-ending race at
Homestead in 2011.
The Nevada native has competed in five races in NASCAR's premier circuit -- all
coming in 2011 -- with his best finish coming with FAS Lane at Homestead, when
he finished 29th, two laps off the pace.
BK Racing Fielding Third Car for Reutimann
As expected after the No. 73's debut at Darlington with Travis Kvapil, BK
Racing announced today their intent to field the team's third car in eight
races for David Reutimann, starting at this weekend's Coca-Cola 600.
Reutimann, who drove the new organization's No. 93 entry at Daytona and
Darlington, will be competing in the car at races when he is not piloting the
No. 10 for Tommy Baldwin Racing in Danica Patrick's absence.
"Everyone at BK Racing is excited to solidify a third car on our team for
David Reutimann," said Scott Gunderson, president of BK Racing.
"I know that he will strengthen our organization with the talent and
experience that he brings to the table."
Added Reutimann: "The 73 team has already proven to be a contender,"
Reutimann said. "BK Racing has great equipment and personnel.
They've shown that they can get the job done and I'm really excited to continue
racing with them. We're already off to a good start and the team is
continuing to improve. Travis and Landon are terrific teammates and I
think having a third car among us will give us better information and more
resources to keep strengthening."
Coulter Making Nationwide Debut at Charlotte
Joey Coulter, driver of the No. 22 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing
in the Camping World Truck Series, will make his Nationwide Series debut in the
History 300 this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Coulter will drive the No. 21, formerly a full-time car for Childress' team in
the series, with sponsorship from Sherwin-Williams.
The 22-year-old Florida native currently sits 10th in Truck points, after
finishing seventh in 2011 with five top-5s and 13 top-10 finishes.
Toyota Unveils 2013 Camry and Lineup
Toyota made big news Tuesday in the form of two huge announcements concerning
the 2013 Sprint Cup season. The automaker began the day by revealing a
new Camry that will debut during Budweiser Speedweeks in February.
Designers created a car that is largely modeled after its street-legal
companion, which continues a recent trend towards increased aesthetic realism
which was set by Ford and Dodge models earlier this year.
“We're thrilled to finally unveil our new 2013 Camry and we think NASCAR fans
will really appreciate that our new on-track Camry looks like the one in their
driveways,” said Ed Laukes, Toyota Motor Sales vice president of marketing
communications and motorsports. “Never before have we had a Camry
competing in NASCAR that looked so similar to its production counterpart.”
According to NASCAR.com writer Joe Menzer, the new Camry
features several modifications in comparison to its predecessor including: a
newly shaped front-grille, fresh body lines above the wheel wells and along the
side skirts, and an altered rear bumper.
“We're extremely proud of the new Camry and the development of the car was
truly a unique process,” said Lee White, president and general manager of
Toyota Racing Development. “NASCAR and all four manufacturers were brought
together to guide the direction of the new cars. We all worked together
to put the ‘S’ back in NASCAR – we all wanted race cars that look more like our
stock, production models – and together we accomplished that.”
Toyota also made great strides Tuesday in assuring the continued success of its
Sprint Cup efforts by reaching terms with several top organizations – Joe Gibbs
Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing, and JTG / Daugherty Racing – on multi-year
contract extensions.
The series of renewed partnerships means that TRD will remain a provider of
engines and chassis engineering assistance to its teams. Through that
high level of interaction and support, Toyota will continue to be a major
contributor in the building success of MWR.
“Toyota has been the cornerstone of MWR,” said co-owner Michael Waltrip.
“They took a chance on us in 2007 and together we have matured into who we are
today. It was an honor to be part of the freshman class. Knowing we
will be with Toyota for the next several years gives our drivers, our team
members and our sponsors a sense of stability and confidence.”
MWR and Toyota have been partnered together since the manufacturer entered
Sprint Cup prior to the ’07 season. Since then, Waltrip’s organization
has seen gradual improvement before breaking out this year in the form of three
poles and seven top-5s through the first 11 races in 2012. Currently,
each MWR team finds itself within the top 12 in owner points.
“We look forward to continuing our relationship with Michael Waltrip Racing – a
member of our ‘freshman class’ from 2007,” said Lee White, TRD president and
general manager. “MWR has steadily grown into a championship-caliber race
team, and the team is now stronger than it’s ever been. We’re extremely
proud of all the team's accomplishments, and we look forward to much more
success together.”
No. 56 Crew Wins First-Quarter Award
A strong performance by the No. 56 Michael Waltrip Racing crew has helped
propel driver Martin Truex, Jr. to 6th position in points thus far in
2012. Because of their success the pit crew has been awarded the
first-quarter Mechanix Wear Most Valuable Pit Crew Award, an honor reserved for
Sprint Cup’s top pit crew.
“The crew has done a great job this year,” said Truex, Jr. “They've been very
fast, but most importantly, they've been consistent. Anytime I come in on
green or yellow flag conditions, I can count on those guys to hold their own
and make no mistakes.”
The New Jersey native’s over-the-wall crew consists of crew chief Chad
Johnston, jack man Brian Chase, front tire changer Eric Maycroft, front tire
carrier Craig Curione, rear tire changer Brandon Hopkins, rear tire carrier
Adam Mosher, and gas man Wes Evans. Greg Miller serves as the team's
stretch and conditioning coach.
NASCAR Unites Teams with EGR at Charlotte
Earnhardt Ganassi Racing will honor military families this Memorial Day weekend
when it teams with NASCAR Unites and its "An American Salute"
campaign for the upcoming Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The
alternate red, white, and blue look present on Juan Pablo Montoya’s No. 42
Dodge Charger will be one of several special schemes sported by drivers during
one of NASCAR’s most prestigious races.
“We are very pleased to join Target in supporting NASCAR Unites for this great
cause," said Steve Laulette, president of Chip Ganassi Racing. "Our
servicemen and women are truly heroes and this is just a small way for us to
recognize their many contributions to this great country. We will be very
proud to see this car hit the track later this week.”
Sadler Penalized for Iowa Infractions
NASCAR announced Tuesday that Elliott Sadler's Nationwide Series team had been penalized
for rules violations found during post-race inspection following Sunday's
Pioneer Hi-Bred 250 from Iowa Speedway. The No. 2 Richard Childress Racing
Chevrolet was found in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock
car racing), 12-4J (any determination by NASCAR officials that race equipment
used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules) and 20A-12.8.1C (body
height requirements--car failed to meet the minimum rear car heights). Sadler
was docked six championship points as a result of the infraction. Additionally,
owner-of-record DeLana Harvick was docked six owners' points and crew chief
Luke Lambert was fined $10,000.
Sadler has two victories and eight top-10 finishes in ten starts this season
and, following the penalty, trails point leader Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. by 34
markers.

Stenhouse Wins Iowa Nationwide Race
Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s success at Iowa Speedway continues.
The defending NASCAR Nationwide Series points champion extended his winning
streak at Iowa Speedway. Stenhouse dominated the field for most of the race to
capture the checkered flag at the Pioneer Hi-Bred 250 in front of 34,000 fans
Sunday. The win is the third straight at the 0.875-mile track for Stenhouse,
who swept the two Nationwide races held here last year. "Man, this one was
fun," Stenhouse said. "I love dominating those races." --/-- The
Roush Fenway Racing driver claimed his third win in 10 starts this season,
extending his series lead to 28 points over Elliott Sadler, who was second.
Stenhouse grabbed his first lead by overtaking Sam Hornish Jr. on Lap 31 en
route to leading 209 laps, tying an Iowa Speedway record set by Busch in 2010.
"It feels good to win three in a row," Stenhouse said. "It was a
lot of fun, leading that many laps."
Stenhouse became the first Nationwide driver to win three
straight at a track since Kyle Busch won three straight at Texas Motor Speedway
in 2009-2010. The streak was not a conversation topic, but no words were
needed. "That's what we set out to do," Stenhouse said. "We
didn't talk too much about it in the shop, but everybody knew we had one thing
in mind coming here." --/-- The rest of the field could not keep up with
Stenhouse, who blew away the field. It is different than Stenhouse's win last
August, when his engine failed on the final lap and he was pushed across the
finish line by teammate Carl Edwards, who couldn't avoid the accident.
"This is the way you want to run," Stenhouse said. "You want to
come out here and dominate."
Cautions were the only thing that proved capable of closing
the gap on Stenhouse's leads, which grew to nearly five seconds at times. He
held off the likes of Kurt Busch, Elliott Sadler and Justin Allgaier during
late restarts. The yellow flag caused Stenhouse to drop as low as fourth, after
Danica Patrick's blown right front tire slid her into the wall in the early
going. Cole Whitt restarted at the lead spot, but Stenhouse soon passed Sadler
for the lead near the midway point. Things became interesting with 65 laps
remaining as Busch completed his move from worst to first after a restart. Less
than a lap later, Stenhouse moved back into first and ran to Victory Lane.
"When you have a race car like we did you don't ever want a caution to
come out. It does and that's just the way it is," Stenhouse said. "I
just wanted to make sure I was cautious. The race was just super-fast to get
back to the front."
The progression continues for Stenhouse and his team as they
stay ahead of their pace set last year. Crew chief Mike Kelley prepared his
team for a tough test, stressing it needed to work harder than ever to avoid
losing steam. "When you get on streaks or have a good deal going that if
this was a race we didn't win, I didn't want it to kill our momentum,"
Kelley said. "We had finished better at every track to this race than we
did last year. We were 76 points ahead of where we were last year after nine
races." --/-- With no Sprint Cup race Sunday and most racing fans' eyes
focused on Newton, the win had added importance. "To come here to Iowa in
front of a packed house," Kelley said, "and to win the race the way
we did today was a bold statement about where our team is and who our driver
is."
Sadler, who started on the pole, earned his third straight
top-five finish at Iowa Speedway, leading two laps. He said the team made key
adjustments through the race and was running its best at the end. The fourth
and final caution, when former Motocross champion Travis Pastrana suffered
electrical problems and bowed out at 26th hampered any chances to catch
Stenhouse. "It's frustrating to finish second. I thought we had a car that
could win the race," Sadler said. "I'm proud of my guys to rebound
the way they did." --/-- Michael McDowell snuck in late to place third.
Austin Dillon was fourth, and increased his lead for Rookie of the Year honors.
McDowell said his car excelled on long runs. He climbed up to third after the
third caution, but was assessed a speeding penalty in the pits, dropping him to
the back of the pack. "I just made a mistake," McDowell said.
"There were a lot of lapped cars between first and second and I tried to
close the gap a little bit and just overdid it. It just showed how strong our
car was."
Busch had a strong run, finishing fifth after placing eighth
at the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on Saturday night at Charlotte Motor
Speedway. Drew Herring qualified the car 31st, but Busch started at the back.
"It's great to sniff the lead, get close to it," Busch said.
"It's just missing a couple little components." --/-- He was third
when he got caught up with McDowell on the final lap. Busch saved the car in a
lengthy sideways slide to preserve a fifth-place finish. "At the end, my
weak spot was Turn 1," Busch said. "We were loose getting in there
all day. McDowell got down in there, I was trying to hold him off and that's
what racing is all about. Two guys got together. Yeah, we got the short end of
the stick but I don't care." --/-- Darrell Wallace Jr., who made his
Nationwide Series debut with Joe Gibbs Racing, placed ninth. (NASCAR Wir

formally introduced the new 2013 Toyota Camry that will compete in the NASCAR
