McLaren to test flip-over rear wing in Hungary (F1)
The rear wing games are rolling on as Formula 1’s top teams fight for supremacy in the tour’s new era.
The papaya squad is the latest in a string of teams to test the unique rear wings, initially made popular by Ferrari and Red Bull as the teams all chase the dominant Mercedes. It initially brought a version of the wing to June’s Austrian Grand Prix for testing, but abandoned the plan to run it over the course of the weekend.
A month later, McLaren intends to utilize the wing in the first free practice session, which will also feature reigning Formula 2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli as one of many rookies testing. He’ll take Oscar Piastri’s place and be joined by Ryo Hirakawa (Haas, replacing Oliver Bearman) and Paul Aron (Alpine, replacing Franco Colapinto).
But while the wing will get true track time, it’s still not planned for competitive racing anytime soon. McLaren claimed the item “is not scheduled to be introduced fully at this or the following race in the Netherlands,” when F1 returns from its traditional summer break. That leaves Monza’s Italian Grand Prix as the first race that could realistically see McLaren put the rear wing to use.
Ferrari is the only team consistently using the unique wing design competitively at this stage. Red Bull initially brought one in Austria, but shelved it after consecutive crashes for Max Verstappen. It’s expected to bring a fixed version out shortly.
