               NASCAR Allowing Tire Choices at Richmond
NASCAR announced Tuesday morning that there will be multiple tire options for the upcoming NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond, similar to what was done in the NASCAR All-Star Race.
 
Entry List: 2024 Brickyard 400
The return of the Brickyard 400 will have 39 teams doing battle. Ty Dillon will race a third Richard Childress Racing entry, while BJ McLeod will race for MBM Motorsports.
 
Entry List: 2024 Pennzoil 250
There are 38 teams entered for Saturday's 100-lap preliminary race in Indianapolis. Joe Graf Jr. will make his season debut for Joe Gibbs Racing, while Greg Van Alst will drive for SS-Green Light Racing.
 
Garrett Smithley Driving for APR at Indy
Alpha Prime Racing announced Monday that they will field a third car this weekend at Indianapolis, the No. 45, for Garrett Smithley.

Cup Series to use option tire at Richmond Raceway (NASCAR Cup)
NASCAR Cup Series teams will have a pair of tire options when the tour returns to Richmond Raceway on Aug. 10-11.
 
The sanctioning body confirmed the news Tuesday, meaning an option tire will come into play for the first time in a Cup points race. The primary (‘prime’) tire will feature Goodyear’s traditional yellow lettering, with the option indicated by the color red.
 
“As we continue the cooperative effort of the industry on short track package adjustments, we felt like Richmond was an excellent opportunity to build upon the results of the option tire used at the All-Star Race,” Greg Stucker, Goodyear director of racing, said in a statement. “The option tire uses our wet weather tread compound, and we saw how that compound performed in the drying conditions of the opening laps at Richmond in the spring. We expect the option tire to provide a significant lap time gain over the prime, but fall-off will be greater, and tire management will be important in taking advantage of it at the right time.”
 
Teams will be given a set of each tire for practice. Prime tires will be used for qualifying and fill up six of the eight slots for the race. The final two sets will be option tires.
 
This move comes as NASCAR works to improve the quality of racing at short tracks in the Next Gen era. The option tire is meant to provide increased pace with quicker fall-off, forcing teams to weigh risk and reward. It was first utilized for May’s All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway, a non-points exhibition event.

Haas sticks with Ferrari as Toyota talks continue (F1)
Haas plans to continue its relationship with Ferrari into the next era of Formula 1 competition.
 
The team confirmed Tuesday that its extended its technical partnership with Ferrari through the end of the 2028 season, continuing into the next generation of car. In doing so, Haas continues a relationship with the Prancing Horse than extends back to its entry into the sport in 2016.
 
“I’m thrilled to extend our relationship with Scuderia Ferrari until 2028,” Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu said in a team statement. “As an organization we’ve only ever raced with Ferrari power units and to have that continued stability moving into the next set of power unit regulations is a key part of our on-going development.
 
“The relationship with Scuderia Ferrari has always been a special one to us – they were instrumental in the genesis of the program back in the early days and have continued to be a valuable technical partner to us throughout the past nine seasons.
 
“I’m delighted we now have more seasons ahead and my thanks go to Fred Vasseur and many others at Scuderia Ferrari for continuing to show faith in our project. This announcement is just another example of the long-term ambition of MoneyGram Haas F1 Team – our investment and growth in the sport continues.”
 
The new deal involves the same elements as before, including use of engines, gearboxes, customer cart parts and usage of wind tunnel and simulator facilities.
 
Its announcement comes as Haas has been rumored for a link-up with Toyota - a brand interested in returning to F1, albeit potentially at less than a full-scale effort.

The Ferrari deal comes in the wake of recent speculation that Haas could be considering an imminent tie-up with Toyota – with stories even suggesting this could include title sponsorship, an engine programme, or use of its Cologne wind tunnel. All of these scenarios are believed to be wide of the mark.
 
While Haas has declined to comment on the situation, it is understood that there are discussions between Haas and the Japanese manufacturer taking place about ways they could work together in the future outside of aspects that Ferrari currently provide.
 
While the talks are only exploratory at the moment, it is suggested ideas being talked about involve possible access to Toyota personnel to help with Haas’s F1 project, car production that could co-exist alongside the team’s current relationship with Dallara or other technical collaborations.

Hunter McElrea set for IndyCar debut with Coyne (IndyCar)
Indy NXT runner-up Hunter McElrea will get his shot at an NTT IndyCar Series start this weekend at Honda Indy Toronto.
 
Dale Coyne Racing announced Tuesday that McElrea will make his series debut in Canada, piloting the team’s No. 18 Honda. The news comes after his participation in a recent test with the team at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
 
“It’s a dream come true for me to be making my NTT IndyCar Series debut,” McElrea said in a team release. “I’ve been working towards this for a long time, and I have to thank Dale for the opportunity.
 
“I can’t wait to get to Toronto, which is one of the coolest events of the year. I want to thank JR Smart and Courtesy Corporation for making this possible for me.”
 
After finishing second in the 2023 Indy NXT campaign, McElrea has spent most of this year in sports cars. The American-born New Zealander has competed with LMP2 team TDS Racing in endurance rounds of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, finishing second-in-class in March’s 12 Hours of Sebring.
 
“Hunter impressed the team during our test last week at Mid-Ohio,” team owner Dale Coyne said. “He quickly got up to speed and helped run through our testing plan.
 
“I’m excited to see what he can do on the streets of Toronto this weekend.”
