175th Anniversary Cathedral Tours

Sunday, September 13 - St. Matthew’s Cathedral

Join the Cathedral Young Adults and the St. Matthew’s Parish community for tours of the Cathedral to celebrate our parish’s 175th anniversary!  If you ever wanted to know the stories behind the history and artwork at the Cathedral, now is your chance!


Interested in helping to lead tours? You can attend a training session on Sunday, August 16th at 3:45PM or Tuesday, August 25th at 6:30PM with Cathedral staff.   Volunteers for hospitality following the tours are also needed.

Sunday, August 9 - 12 Noon - St. Vincent dePaul (14 M Street SE / Navy Yard)
Join the Cathedral Young Adults for an afternoon at the ballpark! We’ll begin with #NatsMass at St. Vincent de Paul at noon, followed by first pitch at 1:35 against the Colorado Rockies!  Tickets are $15 and space is limited so register via eventbrite ASAP!  We will be returning any unsold tickets to the Nationals office this week!

Our conversations are intended to help form, encourage, strengthen, and prepare those who attend to be the women that God has designed them to be. Tuesday, August 11  – 6 to 8 PM – Northwest Center (2702 Ontario Road NW / Columbia Heights)
The Northwest Center provides support and comprehensive care that enables women to deliver and care for healthy babies.  The Cathedral Young Adults get together each month to sort donations or do odd jobs around the Center.

Catholic Charities Cup of Joe with The San Miguel School
Saturday, August 22 - 10:30 AM to Noon - San Miguel School (7705 Georgia Avenue NW / Takoma)
The San Miguel School will be hosting a young adult Day of Service on Saturday, August 22nd from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm.  San Miguel will be partnering with the Catholic Charities Cup of Joe program to make breakfast meals for area homeless shelters.  All young adults are welcome to attend, get a tour of the school, and help to pack meals!  For more information email Molly O'Connor (moco...@sanmigueldc.org)


Painting with the Catholic Charities Youth Transitional Program

Saturday, August 29 – 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM with lunch to follow – The Kennedy School (801 Buchanan Street NE)

The Catholic Charities Youth Transitional Program is a residential program for young men ages 18-24. We’re taking a break from our usual monthly professional skill-building activities. Instead, we’ll be joining the YTP guys to do some painting at another Catholic Charities building. You can take the Metro and/or buses to the school, but we will do our best to coordinate carpools from the Cathedral.

Service Opportunities at the Cathedral


Serve as a Liturgical Minister at the Cathedral: The Cathedral is in need of liturgical ministers at all Masses, including weekday Masses. Ministers of hospitality (greeters), ushers, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, and servers are especially needed. The suggested commitment is one Sunday per month. Contact Deacon Garcia (james.anth...@gmail.com) for more information on expectations and training.     

   

Homeless Ministry: Volunteers are needed to prepare bagged lunches for the poor and homeless who come to the St. Matt’s West Conference Room each Monday morning for food and social services. Contact Olivia or Norma if you would like to provide lunches once a month, every other month, or as a one-time service.

Other Individual Volunteer Opportunities in DC

·         You can find additional volunteer opportunities through Catholic Charities using their volunteer portal.

·         The Northwest Center seeking Spanish-speaking (both fluent and proficient) volunteers for the pregnancy center’s Step Up program. Pro-life volunteers sought to undergo counseling training with the agency and provide assistance to Spanish-speaking pregnant and parenting women and families through referrals to community resources as well as material assistance. We are looking for volunteers who can commit to weekly or bi-weekly service, Monday - Friday between 9am-5pm.If interested, please contact Natalie Jones (nat...@northwestcenter.net) or call 202-483-7008

·       The San Miguel School of Washington DC is launching a young professionals advisory group. San Miguel DC is a Lasallian Catholic middle school serving low-income families by providing a 9 hour school day (until 5pm) and a year-round schedule with small class sizes and intensive tutoring. We continue to provide support to over 170 graduates in high school, college, and the workforce. If you are interested in Catholic education, Catholic Social Teaching's preferential option for the poor, or urban education--this is the group for you! Join us as we network with fellow DC young professionals and spread the word about San Miguel School. ·       Feeling called to service leadership? Catholic Charities is recruiting a group of energetic reliable volunteers to serve on the Hope Corps Volunteer Committee.  Members of this committee would serve as liaisons between Catholic Charities staff, volunteers, and populations served by their events.  Members of the Committee must commit to leading 9 service days per year.  Contact Carolyn (cewa...@gmail.com) for more information.

Cathedral Young Adults Mission

The mission of the Cathedral young adult ministry is to support the community of Catholic adults in their 20’s and 30’s who live and work in DC in the continued growth of their faith, discernment of their vocations, and development as stewards of the Church through opportunities for socializing, community service and spiritual reflection.
