SOUTH AFRICAN MARITIME SAFETY
AUTHORITY
The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) is the body that
controls the use of boats on the sea, estuaries and on inland waters. They
designate
the authority to provide training for Skippers Tickets and
issue those tickets. SAMSA recently decided that the boating rules that apply to
estuaries and tidal rivers will now also apply to inland waters and rivers. All
skippers of powered vessels must be licensed and the vessels must be registered
and contain the required safety equipment. The scale of applying and enforcing
these new rules has dictated a phasing in period and to this end SAMSA has set a
two year period of grace starting from January 2008.
