We have a 'packaged' system that's been running for a couple of years;
all of a sudden the machine locks up, and, upon restart, neither
postfix nor mongrel start. I started postfix manually, however mongrel
is complaining:

** Starting Rails with production environment...
Rails requires RubyGems >= 1.1.1 (you have 1.0.1). Please `gem update
--system` and try again.

Why would the system suddenly decide that Rails is newer then the
gems?

The second question - OK, I did the update, but it chokes:

root@mail2:log# gem update --system
Updating RubyGems...
Bulk updating Gem source index for: http://gems.rubyforge.org

Never returns! Anyone have any insight?

TIA,

Lee

Install the latest RubyGems from source. See my build instructions
(for Debian) here: http://wiki.boochtek.com/build/rails -- you
probably won't want/need my patches. My Rails instructions are
probably out of date, but the RubyGems section is relatively up to
date.

I'm pretty sure there was a known issue with older versions of
RubyGems not able to update themselves.
