| Introducing the Green Dining Alliance | | In the six years since our event-greening program, Recycling On the Go, was first piloted, we’ve built strong relationships with owners, managers and employees of the food vendors who bring flavor and spice to local festivals and events. We’ve also learned a lot about the restaurant industry and the challenges associated with implementing more environmentally responsible practices like recycling. So, after a couple years of planning and networking, we are proud to officially launch the pilot of our sustainable restaurant program: the Green Dining Alliance (GDA).
The program’s mission is to enhance each diner’s experience and support local businesses by engaging restaurants and stakeholders in a process to increase environmental sustainability through tailored strategies, workshops and collaboration. The GDA certification program is anticipated to begin in September 2011 and expected to expand within the St. Louis region in 2012.
The program has started working with the City of Maplewood to support participating restaurants as they take the first steps toward more environmentally responsible practices. We are working with the City, restaurants and waste haulers to increase the amount of recyclables and organics, like food waste, diverted from the landfill. As restaurants meet their initial waste diversion goals, and St. Louisans experience a new kind of local dining craze, new goals will be set to utilize each restaurant’s resources while collaborating intelligently with the business community. Meet our Green Restaurant Coordinator: Michael HahnMichael joined the St. Louis Earth Day team this year as the new Green Restaurant Coordinator of the Green Dining Alliance (perhaps you’ve heard of it?). Michael is responsible for coordinating the launch of the program, which includes developing the program materials, liasing among the many stakeholders and eating lots of yummy food.
Michael hails from High Ridge, Missouri, and as a boy spent most of his time defending tree houses and exploring woods. This early bond with nature would eventually lead him to an interest in environmental preservation. Feeling as though dirty looks to litterbugs wasn’t enough, Michael has found purpose at St. Louis Earth Day. Read more... | |
