What Is a City? Food in the City--16th Annual Conference * October 21-22, 2010, JC Penney Conference Center, Univ. of MO-St. Louis

UMSL Center for the Humanities invites you to join speakers from around the country and St. Louis in examining the place of food in cities through the lenses of history, public policy, social justice, social science, and personal lives. We'll discuss food production, distribution, availability, safety, and enjoyment in such cities as Chicago, Mexico City, and St. Louis. Conference presenters work in urban development, health, ecology, farming, organic gardening, sociology, history, and, of course, eating. Presenters explore urban-rural connections and our relationships with food, food producers and preparers, and nature, as well as address inequities in access to healthy food, including a talk on world hunger and chronic malnutrition. St. Louis Food Outreach describe food needs of their clients with cancer and AIDS. Free but advance registration needed and we ask that audience members bring canned/boxed food donations (no "expired" foods, please), for St. Louis Food Outreach efforts. Registration by phone at 314-516-5974 or visit http://ce.umsl.edu/cfh <https://owa.missouri.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=https://outlook.umsl.edu/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://ce.umsl.edu/cfh>; to access full schedule and on-line registration.
