OK, .. figured out Cynogen is dead, .. long live LineageOS! Decent
selection of HW builds:

Anyone used them yet? Anyone actually tinkering with phones nowdays <g>?

From a HW standpoint, any recommendation for a ~5.5" screen, nice form
factor (maybe without the big black edges, a la HTC One?), .. decent
core speed (quad or hex core minimun), prefer CDMA or multi-mode.

I love my HTC 10, but that's about as big as I'd want to go.  Great support, and you get one free "uh-oh" replacement if you buy from htc.com

Expensive, though.
