Ran across a potential startup last week, and I would like to help
them do some prototyping so they can generate some interest in their
product. Having not done any mobile development in some years, and
also having attended a number of MobildDev meetings where folks were
presenting with some pretty steep learning curves, what would folks
recommend for a way to prototype (and/or develop) mobile apps in the
current environment?

Really should be cross-platform, IMHO, and I have received input from
other folks that it's best to stay HTML5/CSS/JS, but what would be a
decent starting environment? Heavyweight IDE like Eclipse [with the
attendant learning curve]? Text files [which would require a lot of
input for platform sensing (i.e. mobile or desktop) and operation], .. or ??

Also not wanting to start any religious wars (a la vim vs. EMACS), so
please keep it informative <g>!

TIA,

Lee

I recommend PhoneGap [1] for prototyping. The provide wrapper projects
for Xcode and Eclipse so you barely have to touch native iOS/Android
tools. You can do most of your work in Chrome or Safari. As long as
you're doing basic HTML/CSS/JS, everything will mostly* work. Of
course, you'll probably eventually want to migrate to a native
solution, but PhoneGap is a good way to prototype on many devices.

*Obviously, I'm painting with broad strokes and ignoring many details.

I just started looking into Corona SDK for some game development, but it seems like it might be a decent option for prototyping apps quickly.

That's based on Lua.

True, but its pretty amazing when it comes to rapid prototyping

I have developed both prototypes and production Enterprize systems in Phonegap and would also recommend it.

That was one of my first thoughts, however someone that does for a
living suggested staying away from native apps and staying web-based,
.. but might have to try it out.

Thanks!

Interesting, .. it is unclear what "Publish" means within the
framework, .. looks like it marries an app to their cloud servers?

I read this week that the designers of Facebook Home used Apple's Quartz Composer.  Here's the article:

I've also found some videos on how to do it.  I don't know if this helps or not.  I've never used Quartz Composer to design an app, but after reading this, I'm planning on looking into it (once I get time!)

Hope that helps.

Bryce
