google chat and strikeout

Anyone know how to disable strikeout in google chat?
When one types text between two dashes, google chat interprets that
text as text to be struck out. For example, -O- appears as an O with
a line through it. And -|o|- kinda looks like a Star Wars tie
fighter. That's nice if that's the effect one wants. But more often
I'm typing commands with options and it really messes things up.
A google turned up lots of people with the same questions, but no answers.
