Answer from Mike Johnson--- To have a better understanding of the context of the question “Who are the kings in Daniel 10:20-11:4 that Daniel prophecies about?” Reading the previous chapters helps.
We can now look back and see how all these stories and dreams work together. The three stories of faithfulness despite persecution (chapters 1, 3, and 6) are meant to offer hope to God’s suffering people among the nations. They suffer because human kingdoms have rebelled against God and have become beasts (chapters 4 and 5). The visions (chapters 2 and 7) encourage patience that waits for God to bring his rule over the world and vindicate his people. But when is God going to do this? That question is what the final three visions in chapters 8, 9 and 10-12 set out to explore.
In chapter 8, Daniel has another vision about the final two beasts from the previous chapter. In this vision, we’re given a little more information about this king. He will attack Jerusalem and exalt himself above God by defiling the temple with idols. However, in the end, this king will be destroyed by God, who will in turn exalt his people and kingdom.
Now, in chapter 9, Daniel is puzzled as to when all this will take place. He consults the scroll of the prophet Jeremiah, where God said that Israel’s exile would last for 70 years before God would restore them. Those 70 years are almost up. However, an angel comes and informs Daniel that Israel’s sin and rebellion hasn’t been fully dealt with by the exile, and their times of oppression under the nations will last seven times longer than Jeremiah had envisioned.
Daniel is deeply disturbed, and he has one final vision that spans chapters 10-12. We’re shown the same sequence of kingdoms—Persia, then Greece and Alexander the Great, followed by lesser kings that all lead up to the final “king of the north.” He will invade Jerusalem, set up idols in the temple, and exalt himself above God. The vision concludes, like the others, with this king suddenly coming to ruin.
The book of Daniel has been designed to offer hope to all future generations of God’s people. That’s why Jesus used imagery from Daniel to accuse the oppressive leaders he confronted in Jerusalem (Mark 14:62), and it’s why John, who wrote The Revelation, adapted Daniel’s visions and applied them to the Roman empire of his day as well as all future oppressive empires (Rev. 13).
Daniel’s visions also hold out a promise that one day God will confront the beast, rescue his world and his people, and bring his Kingdom. This book is for every generation, and it speaks of a message of hope that motivates faithfulness.

The Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed twice in history. The first Temple, built by Solomon, was destroyed by the Babylonians (King Nebuchadnezzar II) in 586 BC. Zedekiah was King of Judea at the time. Later, the King of Persia Cyrus the Great issued a decree in 539 BC that permitted the Jews to return to Jerusalem (primarily from Babylon) to rebuild the Temple known as the Second Temple that was constructed in 516 BC.
Unfortunately, this Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in AD 70 during the First Jewish Revolt against the Roman Empire (66-73 AD) led by the Roman General Titus. The Temple was never rebuilt after this destruction.

It was brought to our attention by Steve Robine at our voter's meeting yesterday, that if every giving unit, which includes whole families who live together as well as individuals who live alone and give a regular offering, gave a one-time gift of $200 we would pay off our mortgage!
I will be giving a one-time special offering towards the mortgage before the end of this year! What about you?
It would be so nice to be free of that debt and retire that building fund!!! Who's with me?

The Birth of Jesus Christ
2 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration when[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed,[b] who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.[c]
The Shepherds and the Angels
8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”[d]
15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

YESTERDAY'S QUESTION: What is your favorite Epistle and why? Preservice
Perseverance
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,
This is a difficult question to answer. The Epistles, to me, are an extension of Gospels in developing our core beliefs and strengthening our convictions for a Christian Life with the hope of our salvation through Jesus Christ. I will select Epistles on preservice. We so much need perseverance in our daily lives because of the nature of our sinfulness and exposure to temptation in a world that has so much evil.
The Bible has a lot to say about perseverance in several different contexts. Clearly, the Scriptures teach that those who “overcome” and persevere in the faith will inherit eternal life (Revelation 2:7). This truth is also expressed in Colossians 1:23 where we see that people will be holy, blameless, and above reproach “if they continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel.”
The following Epistles speak of the concept of perseverance:
Colossians 1:23 - if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.
Philippians 1:6 - being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 4:16 - Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.
Romans 2:7 - To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.
James 1:22-25 - 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
James 1:12 – Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
2 Timothy 3:12 - In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
1 Corinthians 1:8 - He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

From Mike Johnson-- Peter was referencing the flood of Noah in 1 Peter 3:21: … and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

Creation vs. Evolution- How does the creation account make much more sense SCIENTIFICALLY than the theory of evolution, and why does it take faith more faith to believe in evolution than creation?

MISSIONS TO SUPPORT!!!
Since we have paid off our mortgage and will soon officially end our building fund, many have been asking what good missions we should support with our dollars. Here is a brief answer to that question.
- Our LEGACY FUND--- This is that anyone can give to so that we can be sure that our church is take care of for the next generations. You can give any amount to it. It is administered by LCMS Foundation and our church council will review it annually to make sure things are running smoothly with it.
- Here are our local “missions” that members of St. John’s support in various ways.
Agape- We give $100 a month out of our budget to Agape.
Turning Point (Women’s shelter)
Pregnancy Options Center
Anchor House (Homeless and “in-need” housing)
- The other missions I am personally involved in as pastor of St. John’s, and that our church supports on a regular basis are Christian Friends of New Americans (an immigrant and refugee service based in St. Louis and LeadaChild, based in KC, Kansas.
- We also give 10% of our St. John’s budget to LCMS World Mission. (Mission work and missionaries all around the world)
- Here are our monthly mission emphases for 2026

Feb- Turning Point (women’s shelter)
Mar- Youth (Steak Dinner and Auction)
Apr- Shine (Community Service Project)
May- POC (Pregnancy Options Center Baby Bottle Campaign)

Our first topic will be what God's Word says about Christian Nationalism and how we can be faithful to the Lord's commands to make disciples, love, and forgive in these United States. We will talk about Two Kingdoms Theology and the Lutheran/Christian way to participate in politics with strength, peace, and love.

GOALS FOR 2026!!
At our council meeting last night we put some goals in writing for 2026.
- UP- Increase worship and Bible Study attendance by another 10% like we did in 2025. That means YOU AND I need to get to church, and YOU AND I need to invite others to come with us! It also means that if there is someone who used to be there regularly that you don’t see as much anymore, check on them, show them you care about them, and pray for and with them!
- OUT- Increase our membership by another 5%. That would mean another 25-30 members. That means YOU AND I need to be about the business of finding those in need of a church home and getting them to consider ours. Word of mouth is still the best advertisement! If you’re proud of your church, talk it up! If you’re not happy with your church, talk with pastor and other leadership and find constructive ways that we can improve what we have going on!
- TOGETHER- Add two new fellowship events. Think of events that would be beneficial and attract those who don’t normally attend our regularly scheduled events and get a group together to plan and host it!
What do y’all think? Are these SMART goals Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely?

It is a shelter that is used by the whole region, not just locally.

These next few Mondays we will be looking into the claims the Bible makes about itself as well as how it stands up against scrutiny and hundreds of people trying to disprove it.
We will be using a video series from Answers in Genesis by Brian Edwards a British apologetics scholar and theologian.
This will strengthen your own faith, as well as give you confidence and strength to be a witness to others. PLEASE JOIN US!

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YOUTH STEAK DINNER AND AUCTION IS IN THE BOOKS!!
After expenses we raised about $13,500 for our youth fund!
A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL WHO DONATED, PARTICIPATED AND WORKED!!!
Here’s what we do with the funds
- Go to retreats and youth gatherings
- Support our Little Lambs, Joy Wednesday, and Kid’s Church
- Provide finances for people in need and the community organizations that support them
- Provide scholarships for our graduating high school seniors
- Do servant events locally and where needed

Shepherd the Flock of God
5 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight,[a] not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you;[b] not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
