Team,

As a follow up to our call last night,, Bikki, Jakey and I developed a strategy on how we can help.

Here are the action steps:  Timeline (To be done by this Sunday)

  1. Segment the areas affected - We are going to segment the areas affected into two zones:
    • The Rockaways - Queens, Long Island, Brooklyn (St. Mary's Lynbrook, SPSP, St. John's Yonkers, Bikki please add others
    • Staten Island/New Jersey - (Mar Gregorios, St. George Carteret, St. John's SI, St. James Livingston, St. Mary's Bergenfield)
  2. Determine parishes who will serve as hubs for volunteer support and donation collection
    • The Rockaways - St. Mary's Lynbrook
    • Staten Island/NJ - St. George Carteret
  3. Identify agencies that can accept our support both in terms of supply donnations and volunteer time
    • The Rockaways - https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/RockawayRelief (Please like this page for updates_
    • SI/NJ
      • We have contact with the Greek Church in SI, name is Paul who Thirumeni personally reach out to - Jakey is following up
      • Please look at this link which is really cool way to identify areas of need and ways to help immediately - http://www.tinyurl.com/nycsandyinfo (ALL - please look at this, it is applicable to LI and NJ)
    • Determine what supplies are needed and when donations can be accepted
  4. Gather a volunteer database for each region
    • Reenu/Tine - Jersey Soul
    • Jaijo - St. James Livingston
    • Jakey - St. Mary's Bergenfield
    • Bestin/Bikki - St. Mary's Lynbrook
    • ? - SPSP
    • ? - St. John's Yonkers
  5. Determine when we can act - I personally challenge the group to have feet on the street before thanksgiving
If you guys have other ideas, please throw it in.

Closing Remarks:
Our church is here to clothe the homeless, feed the hungry and to take care of each other due to circumstances that are not in our control.  This is our region, the Northeast, and what I believe a "moment of truth" for us.  If you are living in a home with heat and warm food, remember the families who have lost their homes, churches that have been destroyed, our brothers who are shivering in the cold.  That home you have is a blessing from God and we must distribute the blessings we have to others.

If this email touches you, bring on another person who likes to help.  Take a personal day and get out there and help.  There is tremendous need and all I want to do is point you to opportunity.  Please pray for our region, our citiizens, our church, our Thirumeni and our archdiocese.  We pray through the intercession of all the saints and martys in Christ Our Lord Jesus Christ.

If you have any questions or more important know you want to help, please reach out to me, Jakey or Bikki.

In love and in service,
Shiryl Shem

Let's do some searching ahead of then for opportunities for us to volunteer and donate.  (redcross.com, etc.)

Dear Jakey,

In addition to the Assemblywoman Mallikotakis' efforts, I was thinking it would be better if we can do a food/cloth drive. While waiting online for gas last night, I was able to talk to one of the victims of Sandy who lost his house on Lido Beach.  He too mentioned, he is not worried about monetary assistance as Insurance should be covering everything. He mentioned, they are in need of warm cloths/jackets, and the people at the shelters need food.

So in my humble suggestion, I think it will be better if we can do a food/cloth drive at our parishes, rather than collecting money.  Also on a practical note, asking our fellow Malayalee people for food/old cloths might be more successful than asking for Donations.  Just a thought...=)

Gas lines are still backed up for miles here on Long Island, but we are anticipating things to get better after election day.

Dear Leaders in the Northeast,

Thirumeni met with some relief workers at a nearby Greek Church, after touring the St. John's Church damages. H.E. thought we could mobilize some youth to help, and sent me a text Sunday night with a contact name (Paul) and phone number (917-612-8656).

I spoke with the Paul Monday and said that we could maybe get 10 youth to help this weekend.  He said that he would call back if he could think of anything for a group of us to help with, but that we could also follow "Nicole Malliotakis" on facebook as another way to find opportunities.

In the meantime, do you think this is doable, in addition to a fundraising effort?  Can we mobilize some people to be ready to go if I get a call back, or if one of us sees some need on the facebook page, or on the red cross website?

Thanks.

Thank you for sharing the sad news.  Please let us know how you would like the youth to respond.  If it all possible, can we make our response as swift and coordinated as possible given the historical context of St. John's church in SI.

I believe this event will give an opportunity to our youth to really show who they are.

Dear Very Rev. Corepiscopi, Rev. Fathers & Rev. Deacons,

The Superstorm that hit the North Eastern United States damaged St. John's Syrian Orthodox Church in Staten Island. The wind and water moved the building from its foundation. Inside the church there were several feet of water. The building cannot be used for worship and the congregation is looking for another facility to conduct Holy Qurbono. Our hearts are with Rev. Fr. Rajan Peter, Rev Fr. Faustino and the members of this parish. Let us pray that God Almighty may grant them peace and hope during this most difficult time. His Eminence the Archbishop will visit the church this Sunday afternoon.
