Starting with mobile, I was instantly impressed with how quick it was to boot not only the interface but each game as well. Having to wait for minutes, and go through multiple attempts at times, had really diminished my desire to play on PlayStation, but the snappy response here enticed me to jump into games way more due to just how easy it was.
That small experience showed me that the visual quality held steady, but more importantly, so did the delay. Unlike remote play on PS5, the delay on Xbox Cloud Gaming never felt like it fluctuated. Perhaps, I thought, if it was a consistent delay, I might be able to eventually adapt to it, like learning to play with inverted controls. It would be awkward and uncomfortable at first, but over time I hoped it would become second nature.
When Sony set out to highlight the power of the PS5 and its SSD, it did so with a modified version of Marvel's Spider-Man. We were treated to a flythrough of the city from end to end at speeds greater than even our web-slinging hero could hope to match without a hiccup or drop in graphical quality. That makes it fitting that the first game that feels like it fully lives up to the promises the PS5 was sold on is none other than Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
This generation has had a notably more drawn-out separation from the previous. Nearly all of Sony's first-party releases, including God of War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West, have seen dual releases on PS4 and PS5. PS Plus Premium is adding a new feature next month that will allow subscribers to cloud stream select PlayStation 5 games. The initial list includes heavy hitters like Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West. Sony is targeting an October 30 launch in North America.
Cloud streaming has been one of the primary selling points of PS Plus since its relaunch last year. Subscribers can use the feature to access several games in the service's catalog, including PlayStation 3 games. The new feature will now extend that technology to newer PS5 releases, with Sony saying it plans to make "hundreds" of games streamable.
Starfield is the highest-profile Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S game since Halo Infinite, but the game isn't locked to those two consoles. Thanks to cloud gaming and Microsoft's more open-ended mentality of making its games available on a wide variety of platforms, you don't have to own one of Microsoft's current-gen systems or have the Xbox app installed on your PC.
No, it's not on PS5 or Nintendo Switch, but if you want to play Starfield while it's at the center of the video game industry zeitgeist, here are some places where it's playable other than the Xbox Series X, Xbox Series X, and Xbox PC app.
Steam
The most obvious choice if you want to play Starfield elsewhere is to pick it up on Steam. While Microsoft does have a proprietary PC launcher of its own, Microsoft now consistently releases its own games through Valve's launcher. Bethesda joined Xbox Game Studios in 2021 and has a long history of making its games available on Steam as well, so it's not too surprising that Starfield is available on the platform.
Starfield already proving quite popular on the platform too, having peaked at 266,000 concurrent players, according to SteamDB at the time I'm writing this. If you're looking for a way to play Starfield natively on the hardware you own without using a Microsoft platform or service, this is your best option. It'll run on Steam Deck too, although that's not the only way to experience Starfield on the go.

It turns out Starfield is the perfect example of how cloud gaming can work really well, but also some of the pitfalls of trying to stream such a big (and popular) game. But regardless of how it played, the whole experience proved that the cloud isn't really for me.
Recent years have seen a surge in cloud gaming solutions, aiming to bring full-fledged console and PC video games to more players, wherever they are or however they play. One of the most prominent players in this nascent market has been Xbox, with its aptly named Xbox Cloud Gaming. Despite its innovative tech and exciting premise, the service has historically failed to capture my attention long-term.
Cloud gaming has taken time to propagate to a significant number of platforms to meet players where they are, and it's still heavily dependent on how good your internet connection is. Public Wi-Fi will rarely be up to the task of handling cloud gaming, and even many people's home Wi-Fi is barely adequate to deliver a consistent experience. This isn't Microsoft's fault, of course. However, Xbox Cloud Gaming was still behind competitors regarding streaming efficiency, with other services like Stadia able to deliver lower latency and higher quality with comparable internet connections.
In 2022, things have massively improved, with Microsoft continuing to evolve its Xbox Cloud Gaming service. Moving Xbox Cloud Gaming's server hardware to Xbox Series X-powered blades meant greater graphical quality, improved performance, and a better experience. It also meant that the service could now stream Xbox Series XS-exclusive games like Microsoft Flight Simulator and that Xbox One owners could use cloud gaming to play current-gen games their older console could no longer handle.
Xbox Cloud Gaming is also available in more places, too. Android smartphones and tablets, and Windows PCs, get well-featured dedicated apps; a fantastic browser-based progressive web app means Xbox Cloud Gaming can run on almost anything with a modern browser like Microsoft Edge (including iOS devices); even smart TVs are now getting Xbox Cloud Gaming integration, which convinced Windows Central's Sean Endicott to put his Xbox into storage.
Microsoft's industry-leading cloud gaming touch controls mean that a considerable number of Xbox Cloud Gaming titles can be played entirely via the touch screen on your smartphone, letting you leave your controller or dedicated cloud gaming mobile controller at home.
At the end of all this, the inconsistency of Xbox Cloud Gaming in the past, with its screen tearing, periods of intermittent connection, and inconsistent latency, meant I never really had fun. If I'm out and about and am desperate for entertainment, scrolling through TikTok or playing a few games of Solitaire feels far more appealing than a session of Xbox Cloud Gaming. I have my Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and a custom gaming PC at home to cover all my video gaming desires. Where is Xbox Cloud Gaming supposed to fit?
I was intrigued when I was offered the opportunity to review the Logitech G Cloud for Windows Central. An Android-powered handheld gaming console designed from the ground up for Xbox Cloud Gaming? I admittedly wasn't confident that this was a device anyone would want or need, given the existence of other handheld consoles like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, but Logitech made a point of proving me wrong with the G Cloud.
The Logitech G Cloud is supremely comfortable to use for long periods, has excellent controls that pair perfectly with any of the titles offered through Xbox Cloud Gaming, and boasts stellar battery life that ensures I never have to worry about running out of juice. More importantly, it also saves my phone from smudges, the battery drain, and taking on a task for which it's simply not designed. No accessory or service can make a squared glass sandwich the best gaming experience, and the Logitech G Cloud is proof of that.
