The Italian military rank of maresciallo ([mareʃˈʃallo]; marshal) is classified as a "sub-officer" and is the highest rank of non-commissioned officer in the Italian Armed Forces. It is higher than the rank of sergeant but lower than that of ensign/second lieutenant. There are from three to five grades within the rank, according to the different branches of the armed forces. The rank is achieved through merit or attending the Scuola Allievi Marescialli (School of Student Marshals). Marshal is an intermediate rank of the armed forces which is currently granted to NCOs with the training and technical competence to carry out specialised executive roles, and to command smaller and technically complex units.[1]

The rank of marshal in Italy was initially provided only as the marescialli d'alloggio (lodging marshals) of the Royal Carabinieri. In 1902 [2] the rank was established for the Royal Army. The rank was unique and higher than that of furiere maggiore (senior quartermaster). Subsequently in 1907 [3] the ranks of quartermaster and quartermaster were abolished and the rank of marshal was divided into three classes: 1st, 2nd and 3rd class marshal who were then renamed Maresciallo maggiore, and Maresciallo ordinario , respectively. The badges of rank were regulated only on January 22, 1907 by a circular. In the Regia Marina (Royal Navy), the equivalent ranks were those of capo di 1, 2 e 3 classe.

Until 1972 the marshals were framed in three hierarchical levels: maresciallo ordinario, maresciallo capo and maresciallo maggiore and had a distinctive respectively one, two or three mottled golden stripes of black placed vertically on the shoulder straps. In 1972, maresciallo maggiore aiutante was added, above the other degrees, but always subordinate to the degree of aiutante di battaglia. This degree was distinguished as it was reachable by promotion to choice and not for seniority, and had the same distinctive of Marshal Maggiore, but with the mottled rods of red. After 1972 for all marshal ranks were reoriented horizontally.

"Here in Italy, you have to take a three-day course at your local Automobile Club, then you have to take a final test. Once passed, you are eligible to be called to any event taking place at the Autodromo and abroad too. We are all volunteers, but we do receive a small reimbursement which should cover travel and food expenses."

"During the year, I am usually called for ten events at the Autodromo. Of course, you give your availability at the start of the season, clearly indicating the days when you would be free to come. Once you are called, you have to attend a pre-race briefing (for the Italian GP, this happens on Tuesday) where the Race Direction discloses a full timetable of the event, not available to the general public and specific regulatory additions for the race. Usually, the Race Director goes through the previous year's highlights, to indicate what's been good and what can be improved."

"We have to take care of the drivers' and of the audience's well-being. Our priorities are clear: we have to safeguard our own lives, then the drivers', then the audience's. The car comes last. During the Italian GP there are 260 marshals divided in various marshalling sectors and posts, each one of them having a Head Marshal. To that, you have to add firefighters, medical personnel and extrication teams, making it 600 people around the track. If you are marshalling in the pit lane, during some competitions you are assigned one or two boxes: your job is to check if any infringement of the Sporting Regulations is undergoing. For obvious reasons, only expert marshals are assigned to this post."

"The first thing we do is checking the driver's health conditions. We are under no circumstances allowed to touch him or her: if they cannot come out of the car on their own, medical personnel and extrication or decarceration teams must be called. These last two teams intervene in different events, the first being involved in GPs and single-seater competitions, while the latter are called for GT competitions. As the name suggests, a decarceration team's job is slightly different: if the rollbar is deformed in the accident or collision, it can literally form a cage around the driver. Their procedure is highly technical, that's why marshal do not perform it."

"All communication is made between the Head Marshal and Race Direction. We are not allowed to use the black and white flag (warning a driver about unsportsmanlike behaviour) and the black flag (disqualification). We can use the red flag (session stopped) only if told so by the Race Direction."

"I have acquired this beauty four years ago: it took me a while to find exactly what I was looking for, since I wanted a stock model, without any kind of tuning or modification. The V8 engine this car carries is one of the best Ferrari has ever produced, and its sound is amazing. What I really like about Ferrari is that you are always a top-class cliente to them, whether you've bought a 488 Pista or not. This car is a true pleasure to drive around, especially since I'm a former rally driver. I never take her to the Fiorano circuit, because I know I might get the temptation of joining the competition again!"

In the uniformed sectors - the Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza - those at the marshal level are called inspectors and are distinguished from supervisors and were once non-commissioned officers. Their grades resemble those in the Italian army:

On June 10, 1940, from his famous balcony at the Palazzo Venezia, the scene where he had announced the creation of the Italian Empire in 1936, the enraptured Duce now declared war to enthusiastic throngs of Fascist Party faithful cheering him on below. However, it was a hollow sham for, like the two marshals on May 26, the Italian people did not want the war. They saw no real reason for it.

On September 1, 1939, Hitler had jumped the gun on Italy by invading Poland, and when Britain and France declared war on Germany two days later, Mussolini shamefacedly begged off from supporting Hitler as an active belligerent until France was defeated. In March 1940, at their Brenner Pass meeting, Hitler said he would attack in the West shortly, with Il Duce pledging to come into the war then.

He was born on June 5, 1896, the son of a schoolmaster. Well educated and a university graduate, Balbo was first and foremost a man of action as well as a writer who published his own newspaper, articles, and books. He met fellow journalist Mussolini in 1914, when Balbo was 18 and the future Duce 31. Both wanted Savoyard Italy to renounce its alliance with Hohenzollern Germany and Habsburg Austria-Hungary, which it did in 1915, and switch sides to join the Allies. Both young men joined the elite Italian Army mountain troops fighting the Austrians and both were wounded.

On January 12, 1923, Il Duce reorganized the various violent Fascist squads into the Voluntary Militia for National Security with General Emilio DeBono as its chief and Balbo as a member of its high command. The following year, when an anti-Mussolini Socialist member of the Italian House of Deputies disappeared and was later found to have been murdered by the Fascists, Balbo and other top Fascists were implicated.

Mussolini now began to both fear Balbo and be jealous of him and sought to channel his ruthless energies and ambitions into other directions. In 1923, Il Duce had created the Italian Air Force as a separate service from the Army, and it was to this service that young Balbo now gravitated.

The flight was characterized by some as an inspection and morale-building expedition and others as a hunt for British armored cars in the desert. Balbo reportedly hoped to rendezvous over the fortress port of Tobruk and then descend on a fleet of armored cars that had been lured into attacking an Italian airstrip in the desert with a host of fighters as bait. On the 28th his plane, a standard trimotor Savoia Marchetti SM.79 bomber named I-MANU in honor of his wife, was overloaded with nine passengers instead of the normal crew of five, with Marshal Balbo at the controls.

Now, just above Tobruk, Balbo started to prepare for a landing while the pilot behind wisely gained altitude instead and veered off to the left. Balbo proceeded, and his plane was mistaken by the naval gunners below for a Royal Air Force Blenheim bomber returning for a second pass at the heavily fortified port.

Filled with enthusiasm over the Italian American distinction, New York State Assembly Member Michael Benedetto is being celebrated this year as the grand marshal of the Morris Park Columbus Day parade.

Benedetto has lived most of his life in the Throggs Neck neighborhood of the Bronx and has been marching in the local Columbus Day Parade for more than 20 years. For the community stalwart, the Columbus Day parade is a way to celebrate his Italian heritage.

Apart from his teaching career, Benedetto also started the Throggs Neck Community Players, a local theater group, in addition to serving on Community Board 10 from 1975-1979. He also co-founded the Bronx Times Reporter newspaper in 1981.

In his youth, Massna twice sailed on French ships as far as South America. Young Massna received the rank of general in the French revolutionary army a few months before Napoleon, when he was only 25 years old.

Although noted as a very good military commander, it is characteristic for Massna that he had no formal military training at academies. So, he reached the rank of marshal gradually, through his success in practice, rather than through academic knowledge.
