As some of you may be aware, the revolutionary service OnLive became
available in the UK today. However, it does not work on Campus, as the
age-old problem of blocked ports has ruined the fun for us again!

Over the summer I've been talking with the Computing Science
department about opening ports for some gaming ability, but the sheer
number of ports that would need to be opened to cater for even a tiny
number of games is frankly huge.

However, OnLive may be the solution to this problem, as it only
requires around 200 ports to be open. So I think this is the angle I'm
going to try for. Dr. Fayed has agreed to sponsor this idea if we can
provide some researched examples of what the networks are like in
other universities in scotland in this area.

I would appreciate if some of you could contribute and contact friends
from other universities and ask them about their Campus internet and
whether or not computer gaming is feasible on it, or if some other
solution is provided to them.

You could also contribute by giving your ideas - or simply supporting
the rest of us in giving us SOME gaming functionality on-campus!

Thanks,

I know it is a pain but it is not to piss off students living on
campus rather than keeping out attempts to invade systems inside the
networks as well as limiting the amount of traffic running on the
network. There are some ways to provide some gaming solutions to
students but they would all require some organisation to take
responsibility for it (i.e. Gaming Societies).
To my knowledge almost every university has roughly the same policies
and only allows traffic for well known programs ( sometimes not event
that, MSN has been known to be blocked on campus for a while ).

But tbh that might just be the german talking (i.e. pessimistic). If
anyone happens to find a working example at another university I would
be happy to support it though.

Cheers,

Tobi

Yeah I get what you're saying. But I think it's helps to remain
optimistic. Still, I reckon there ARE ways to improve the gaming
situation, even if it does involve creating a society especially for
it. (With dedicated phone lines etc).
