Castle of Illusion is a side-scrolling game putting the player in control of Mickey Mouse in a magical quest to save Minnie Mouse from the evil witch named Mizrabel, who has kidnapped Minnie to steal her youth, beauty and mouse form. Each level exists within the large titular castle and the player must defeat enemies and bosses by jumping on them, or collecting apples and marbles to use as projectiles. The player can also collect icons to increase health, collect extra lives, or gain bonus points. After defeating one of the "Masters of Illusion", the player is given a gem. When all seven gems are collected, the player can build a rainbow bridge that allows him/her to walk into the castle's tower for a final battle against the witch (who in her youthful form resembles Queen Grimhilde).
Using the Toon's Heart power, all the normal Toons are sent back home, though the castle begins to fall apart, but Mickey manages to get home, after saying goodbye to Oswald. When Mickey returns home, he plans to tell Minnie about what happened, thinking she doesn't remember what occurred. Minnie, however, was still at home after Mickey had left for the adventure, leaving him shocked at the idea that Minnie herself had been nothing more than an illusion in the Castle.
In the story, Minnie Mouse has been kidnapped by the witch Mizrabel and taken to her castle of illusion. The player controls Mickey who is trying to rescue her. Mickey must proceed through five dangerous levels of the castle, avoiding obstacles, and collecting the seven Gems of the Rainbow in order to reach Mizrabel's final room to save Minnie.
