TheSAT Subject Test in Physics, Physics SAT II, or simply the Physics SAT, was a one-hour multiple choice test on physics administered by the College Board in the United States. A high school student generally chose to take the test to fulfill college entrance requirements for the schools at which the student was planning to apply. Until 1994, the SAT Subject Tests were known as Achievement Tests; until January 2005, they were known as SAT IIs; they are still well known by this name.

The material tested on the Physics SAT was supposed to be equivalent to that taught in a junior- or senior-level high school physics class. It required critical thinking and test-taking strategies, at which high school freshmen or sophomores may have been inexperienced. The Physics SAT tested more than what normal state requirements were; therefore, many students prepared for the Physics SAT using a preparatory book or by taking an AP course in physics.


On January 19 2021, the College Board discontinued all SAT Subject tests, including the SAT Subject Test in Physics. This was effective immediately in the United States, and the tests were to be phased out by the following summer for international students.[1][2] This was done as a response to changes in college admissions due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education.[1][3]


Students taking the SAT Subject Test in Physics were prohibited from using any resources during the test, including textbooks, notes, or formula sheets. Although there were mathematics questions including trigonometry, the use of a calculator was not allowed. All scratch work was required to have been done directly in the test booklet.


The Brazil-Mexico Connection Project aims at promoting GAC competencies of creativity and innovation, collaboration, cross-cultural understanding, critical thinking, communication, and computing skills. Biology test questions ask students to solve problems and demonstrate understanding of topics including: biochemistry and the cell, genetics and evolution, and animal and plant systems and ecology. Students must demonstrate an understanding of scientific practices by applying knowledge of scientific inquiry and by using mathematics, measurement, and graphical models to solve problems.


Students can affirm the algebra and geometry skills typically developed through the first years of secondary school. These skills include solving equations, drawing conclusions from data, finding areas and volumes, and making judgments about proofs. Calculators are encouraged, and a reference sheet provides common formulas.


Students can affirm their advanced algebra and precalculus skills. These skills include understanding complex numbers, modeling with vectors and matrices, applying advanced functions, finding limits, fitting a normal distribution, and interpreting graphs in the polar coordinate plane. The chart that follows provides general information on the MTEL tests that are currently offered to meet the subject matter test requirement for each license. Additional requirements for a license, such as passing the Communication and Literacy Skills test or an approved alternative as part of the regulatory pilot, may need to be met. Both the General GRE and the Physics Subject Test GRE are required for admittance into some Ph.D. and Masters Degree program for physics. The General GRE is offered all year long and the Physics GRE is offered only in April, September, and October. Most physics majors take the Physics GRE September or October of their senior year. Students can register for either test by going to the GRE website.

While not required, taking an AP (Advanced Placement) or IB (International Baccalaureate) physics class may be helpful. In particular, most AP Physics 2 and IB Physics HL classes cover the majority of the content on the exam.
