Were pleased to announce the latest version of Recuva with minor performance improvements and bug fixes. This release fixes an issue where Recuva was incorrectly assigning an "Excellent" status to securely deleted files. Now, the condition of these files is correctly displayed as "unrecoverable."

You misunderstand portable, to my knowledge, is not permanently canceled, this version doesn't have a portable because (at my guess only) because the only thing added is telemetry to see how people use it

Nergal is an astute observer of history. Piriform does not always release portable versions at the same time as the main release. And in this case, it was an interim release with only a build increment (from 1.53.1087 to 1.53.2065) rather than a version update release, and with no functionality added - so no update to the portable version.

In a similar fashion, we updated the Defraggler, Recuva and Speccy installers back in 2020 - but since there was no change to the product itself, there was no need for a portable release at that time either.

Portable just means that it is meant to be carried round from machine to machine on a USB stick so that there is no need to install it on each machine.

If you want it on the machine itself rather than on a stick then just copy/paste it onto the machine, it's portable so it doesn't need to be installed.

Unfortunately, I have lost some portable apps, and Recuva is one of them (no, I have no backup of apps, but I do have backups on 3 external HDDS of my data).

It is no longer downloadable, so no change to download even an older version.

Before we try to "hack" the system or bypass any security restrictions: let me use the portable versions of Recuva, Defraggler and Speccy.

CCleaner is luckily available as portable version, so I can use it without any problems.

It is a limitation by the company, but I have the permission to execute portable applications from one specific folder.

Reason is, that I need some tools for my work task, so I have a special permission.

This way only portable versions are working.

I really don't know the structures at Piriform (if forum moderators are employees or volunteers), but it would be perfect, if you @nukecad can encourage the developers to update all build pages with portable versions.

This saves us all many many forum postings.

To that point i recently asked for the return of recuva portable, so it can be loaded on a flash drive (preferably on a different pc) and used from there, reducing data loss to the affected drive. So there are others who wish for builds to return.

I am a computer expert and unfortunately the "hotline" of many friends and family members.

Here Speccy Portable would be useful to get their system specs.

Recuva Portable would be very useful to recover files they have accidental deleted.

And for those tasks a portable application would be the best option, because I don't have to install anything on their machines (the PC of my brother crashed, and he blamed me because I installed something, luckily it was just a portable application, so I could explain, that it was not my fault).

I must admit, that my brother calls me at least 2 times a week for PC "issues" and that I am happy that he finds the power switch himself now.

But for a business where you don't need support and only need it for a few machines, can you use the free version, or since you are a business you MUST buy the business version? I couldn't find a page that clearly spelled out the answer for me.

The inscripted link leads not to a download page for the zip file but to the site

and it asks for the download of rcsetup153.exe.

Please tell me where I can download the zip file for the portable version for Windows 10.

I found a solution here in this forum.

I succeded in opening the rcsetup153.exe with 7Zip and to extract ist in a directory on an USB stick. The unpacked direectory contains the files recuva64.exe and recuva.exe. The first one runs without error.

To create the portable.dat dummy file: - Right-click on a blank area of the new folder > click New > Text Document - Replace the entire file name with "portable.dat" and click Enter. - You will be prompted to confirm the file extension change. Click Yes.

The current non-portable Recuva release of v1.53.0.1087 weighs in at a hefty 5,609,656 bytes for the 64-bit executable. That's over a half a megabyte of unnecessary additional closed-source code doing who-knows-what.

I am a new here and I am trying to recover video files from a formatted SD card. I downloaded the free version of Recuva and run the deep scan. It said it found many files, but from the file sizes it seems like the video files (over 1gb) have not been found. That made me wonder, because other softwares did find the files, but I did not want to spend 100 bucks on recovering the files, therefore Recuva sounded reasonable. Will it make a difference for the deep scan to buy the pro version?

QUESTION: Can the Free Version of Recuva find Data Files (Music, Photos etc) in a RAW file system? It ask to format the drive, but don't want to lose the data. The drive is attached to a PCI-E slot ( Sata to PCIE) on an Asus Z77 Motherboard.

If Windows now sees your drive as unallocated space (RAW), then you have the option of using partitioning software to search for and hopefully restore the partition as it was. All drives have at least one partition, and yours is lost.

$BadClus is a system file so will be of no use in recovery. I believe it was used to hold bad cluster remapping before all that was done at the disk controller level. My few remaining memory cells say that it might be a sparse file, so the 447gb size might not represent actual space used or content.

The only options there are with Recuva are normal and deep scan. If you don't enter any selection criteria (and I advise that you don't) then Recuva will return all that it finds. There are no tweaks to find further files. There may well be no further files to find.

Carrying out a Quick Format clears the stored data from the $Badclus file which means it no longer has any idea where the bad sectors are. I believe this is why it now shows as being the same size as the entire drive although it probably takes up very little space at all.

Windows does know how to format an SSD, but I believe you have to select "Quick Format" somewhere during the initial set up of the format. Do you remember specifically doing that? I don't have an SSD to check this myself.

If it's at all possible, that issue needs to be rectified first. The quick format hasn't done anything at all to the drive contents as it simply rewrites the boot sectors and makes the drive accessible.

What you are saying is Recuva itself will not be able to recover lost files, although despite the quick format> The Files should still be there, but can only be re-allocated with *Other software.

None of us work for Piriform by the way, or are experts at data recovery or damaged drive repair. We're just members like yourself, but if we can help at all with what experience or knowledge we have, we will. The obstacle to get around if possible is that $Badclus file.

Or better still install something like the free version of "MiniTool Partition Wizard", which will not only show your drive state but also has a number of tools which may be useful later, after you post a screenshot with your drive loaded into it.

I'm pleased you've got your files back whichever way you did it, but I wish you'd mentioned at the onset that you have a back up Image. I would have told you it could be mounted as a drive to simply copy out files/folders. I use my Images that way.

Recuva was described by vnunet.com as an "effective tool for undeleting or salvaging files we sent for recycling and deleted, in the past".[7] The program works on FAT, exFAT and NTFS file systems of Windows.[8] It is able to recover lost directory structure and automatically renames files when trying to recover two files of the same name. As of version 1.5.3 it can also recover files from Ext2, Ext3 and Ext4 file systems of Linux.[9]
