Which language are you playing the game in? English

How often does the bug occur? Often (50% - 99%)

What is your current game version number? 1.68.156.1020

What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? All except Journey to Batuu

Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Check names of newly spawned townies

What happens when the bug occurs? The names are all Asian styled

What do you expect to see? A diverse set of names for npcs

Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Yes

Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Yes

Please describe the patch or change you made. The newest patch was installed as well as snowy escape

Is it normal for most of the townies to spawn with Asian styled names? I've only noticed this since installing snowy escape. I am playing with an old save since early 2020 and I have just sent one of my sims to university and it seems all of her roommates and townies all have Asian styled names. Is this because of snowy escape being installed?

I love ethnic names being mixed into the game, but the random townies being spawned almost all tend to have Japanese names. Babies born or names randomized share the full name pool, only generated sims have the Japanese names constantly.

I like the Asian names being present, but yeah, as with most things in Sims 4 it becomes an issue. For a while it was the Indian names for me. Nearly every townie spawned with that style of name. Now, way too many are spawning with Japanese names. Again, I like seeing them in here, but 4 in every 5 abhorrent looking townie need not have a Japanese name. Especially when they look like a white woman in a hijab. Please, settle down with all this. And take that eyeball ring off!

Do you have city living? I think the game is supposed to spawn townies with asian names for San Myshuno but something has gone wrong here and it seems like 70-80% of townies are city living asian sims. The game seems to very rarely spawn any other type of sims.

Product: The Sims 4

Platform:PC

Which language are you playing the game in? English

How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)

What is your current game version number? 1.72.28.1030

What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? All expansions; all game packs except batuu, outdoor retreat and strangerville; stuff packs I own are tiny living, nifty knitting, movie hangout stuff, vintage glamour, perfect patio, kids room, laundry day

Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Play with the game and see which townies generate. This is particularly apparent in university dorms, but you can see this at most non-residential locations.

What happens when the bug occurs? No black, middle eastern/east Asian or white sims generate, majority of sims encountered in worlds are Japanese names. This used to be mostly pacific islander names before snowy escape and for a while a lot of Latinx names after Jungle Adventure. Maxis made Sims appear in all worlds and don't appear in the hangouts of their actual world/neighbourhood where you would expect to see them.

What do you expect to see? Ethnic diversity similar to real life. Island Living should have mostly pacific names, Snowy Escape mostly Japanese, city living a large variety, Windenburg and Britechester mostly European and the other American worlds representative of typical US populations. It doesn't make sense that a British university town would be populated entirely by Japanese people and this is immersion breaking. I also find the lack of black sims in worlds like willow creek which has a new orleans aesthetic to be bordering on offensive. I would also like to see townies stick to the worlds they are generated from, Judith Ward, Bella Goth and Nancy Landgraab need to stay in their worlds as opposed to their constant mountain climbing adventures.

Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Not now. I've removed them.

Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Yes

Please describe the patch or change you made. After downloading island living and snowy escape, as well as city living and jungle adventure to a lesser extent

Screenshot shows names of roommates generated when my sim (Bea Brilliant) enrolled in university. Screenshot does not show names of townies at student commons/other locations in different worlds as this would be difficult to display.

Update: It has come to my attention that people have been misusing this article to serve stupid agendas and express weak sympathy for marginalized communities. I have written a response about this misuse. It is also important to note that this article is not written in response to the KFC crap people are talking about for the past few weeks.

Dating sims are also in a similar situation. While the genre seems to be self-explanatory, few dating sims have come overseas. There remains an aura of mystery around these games. People would be aware of visual cues and certain tropes coming from them through cultural osmosis: the influence of TokiMemo 2 for example is so massive it has appeared as a regular enemy in Neptunia MKII. Of course, many people would have never played these games because they remain untranslated.

The knowledge is utterly lacking then in what these ironic pseudo-dating sims are supposed to be critiquing. At best, they criticize trite themes like the fetishization of high school girls and the gamification of dating while conforming to the same problems they are attempting to satirize. At worst, they are Orientalist media that plays on the wackiness of the Japanese origins and advance a narrative that the West knows better and can solve these problems. These assumptions ignore the diversity and innovations of dating sims they are supposed to be critiquing.

Many ironic pseudo-dating sims do not take note of these innovations and nuances. While a good deal of this comes from the lack of translations and documentation, it is in the opinion of the writer a poor attempt at researching the genre. They are creating a work in a genre they remain unaware about and they dare attempt to critique something they do not actually know. The ironic pseudo-dating sim crowd merely approaches the genre as if it is a static thing that has never changed in the past thirty years.

We should also not give any more attention to these ironic pseudo-dating sims by not naming them ever. Some of the more politically offensive and even racist titles out there are using the shock value to get reported in video game journalism and social media. We need to resist the temptation to say their names. Deplatforming these works should be of utmost priority to anyone who cares about helping out the indie world.

Ironic pseudo-dating sims are an anomaly that is unfortunately a part of video gaming history. There is still time to revert the damage it has done if it is degraded as a fad. But if it does not happen, this will be more than just the trend by a bunch of people who think they can do better than Japanese dating sims.

Awesome article. Thank you for taking the time to gush about your love of the genre instead of one-sidedly bashing or doing a take down of persons responsible for the degradation of the reputation of indie developers.

Are you excited about the new Sims 4 Expansion Snowy Escape? Well, you should be! This expansion has a whole lot to offer. New CAS items, new build and buy items, new skills, new activities, new deaths, new world, new interactions, new lot type, new culture, new a lot of things!

This first section is going to be all about the world and its culture. There is a lot of emphasis on culture and tradition in Snowy Escape, even more so than Jungle Adventures. The Sims team has really gone above and beyond making worlds unique with their own cultures. This offers a lot more immersion and playability features within the game.

Mt. Komorebi expands on the types of things that have been done in previous worlds like Selvadorada and Sulani. The overall feel of the expansion is very immersive and a breath of fresh air. I think a lot of people are really going to enjoy this expansion pack.

Komorebi means light filtering through the trees. There are tons of trees around throughout Mt. Komorebi and each neighborhood has its own distinct themes and perks. The new world Mt. Komorebi is a very unique setting for locals and tourists. Sims can either reside or visit these snowy slopes.

Hiking in this neighborhood is very popular as there are a couple of places that Sims can hike to and enjoy the nature around them. This is a beautiful neighborhood and features points of interest; the Mountain Temple, The Graveyard, and Bamboo Forest. There are quite a few areas throughout the neighborhoods that are great places to relax within nature.

The Mountain Temple is a beautiful landmark that is the perfect place to make a wish or take a photo. You can interact with the two boards but that is about it here. Taking too many selfies is also considered disrespectful.

The beautiful Bamboo Forest is the most incredible place for a Sim to take a hike! There is wildlife in the forest such as bats, hornets, centipedes, and forest spirits. Spray repellents will keep your Sim safe. You can also check your local information board to check for updates on wildlife conditions.

Wakaba is the newer, more modern part of the world in the Snowy Escape expansion pack. This neighborhood has beautiful sleek homes, a modern Town Center, and tons of green areas. Wakaba is also the location for the Festival of Youth. Wakaba is a residential area, the perfect mix for locals and tourists alike with its three residential lots, one rental lot, and one lounge.

The overall neighborhood is still lovely and a great residential location. The parks and little extra areas staged throughout balance out the no train interaction issue fairly well. You can also swim in the river!
