What are the experiences of Filipino American ballers in the Philippines? What is it like to move away from the U.S. to pursue their hoop dreams? In this special TFAL episode from the Philippines, we speak with former PBA star Tony De La Cruz about his journey to the PBA. He talks being among the first Filipino American players to join the PBA, the culture shock he experienced when moving to the Philippines, his current role as a basketball and life coach, and his views about Filipino-style of basketball and basketball in general. He also discusses his battle with depression and the importance of mental health among Filipinos. Tony truly believes that basketball is an apt metaphor for life.
Tony is truly an inspiration and it was a honor to interview him. He welcomed Joe and Gerlie to his lovely home and we broke bread with him. Though the premise of the interview was basketball, our conversation was so much more. We hope you enjoy this episode.
How adorable. You From Another Star is really hitting all the right notes for me, from its romantic chemistry to its fizzy comedy to its light genre touches. The pacing continues to be quick and efficient, with just enough relationship build-up to tease, yet leave me wanting more.
Biking by the river, Min-joon stops to watch a large-scale search party coming to a close as a corpse is pulled out of the water. The body is covered, but the feet wear a pair of glittery high heels.
Inside the police station, lead cop Detective Park is ready to put a swift end to the investigation, deeming it a suicide. The top star was on depression meds and recently tweeted about how living was difficult, and on the day of the accident she was seen drunk. He asks the prosecutor in charge to help wrap things up, but Prosecutor Yoo is less willing to gloss things over without a full investigation.
Min-joon tries to get some sleep, but his ears pick up the sound of Song-yi discovering his secret library while hunting for the bathroom. She takes in the grandiose sight and the collection of centuries-old artwork and artifacts, then pulls a journal from his shelf at random to rifle through.
Still examining the security tapes, the investigators sit up in alarm to see the stranger on the boat walking amidst the crowd, and then disappearing into nothingness. What is he, some kind of ghost?
We see Joseon Min-joon with a gisaeng (Sohn Eun-seo) who offers him the gift of a painting, which now hangs in his library. She asks him to accept it as proof of her feelings, then boldly leans up to give him a kiss.
Thank you for the recap, and I wonder if YH ended up dying or being killed in the Joseon times. We were not showed what she did, when her mom asked her to leave. MJ has said before that a child died because of him interfering, right? makes me think it might have been her, which might explain partly why he ends up feeling compelled to save and help SY.
No, I don't think she died. Remember, Min-joon was poisoned and tied down when the girl escaped. And there was no way for him to know if she survived or not. Even her father thinks that her mother killed her.
Hello Rushie,
See, your reasoning makes sense to me, and that is why I feel ambivalent about her death (and therefore I am not totally sure that she died). I feel that the show is doing a good job at keeping me guessing, because her having died or not, can equally be argued. Thank you for adding your thoughts to this conversation.
I suspect that you will find answers to most of your questions in future episodes as they unfold (because the drama wants to reveal certain details in its own pace). Also, re-watching earlier episodes may yield some clues as well.
I am not letting minor details get in the way of seeing or enjoying big pictures. I think I am just experiencing the drama and its episodes differently. I appreciate people who take the time to answer, though I would understand if they didn't. I cannot make people answer my questions if they don't wish to.
I do not have the best of imaginations, so I don't really trust mine. I love reading other people thoughts, and I have found that at times, I have actually gotten some people to think about things they would not have thought about. I fill in the gaps as much as I can, however, I do appreciate the conversations I am having, some of which were started with those questions. It could be that my way of commenting is different. Just like there is a diversity of comments here, there is a diversity in the way the comments are formulated.
Thank you for your comment.
it suddenly dawned on me that maybe the reason why Min-joon can't connect the old Song-ji to the young SJ of 12 years ago, is because the SJ doppelganger in Joseon did not grew old to become the present SJ lookalike. Oh, sad, her wish (of a lie) did not materialized =(.
What I find interesting, is that MJ still thinks about the SY (or rather Yi-hwa) of the Joseon times, and he does think about the SY of 12 years ago. Assuming that YH died 400 years ago, we know that MJ is very smart and that h has an excellent memory. I don't think he needs to see the doppelganger being older to be able to make the connection between SY as teenager, and SY the older actress.
Yeah, it is kind of sad that the doppelganger didn't get her wish, however, for some reason, that does not seem to bother me, maybe because back then, MJ didn't seem to have romantic feelings for her. That would make sense (to me), since she was still young (OK, even though 15 is not that young, I know). I guess I am just OK with what we have seen of what happened 400 years ago, so far. There are still so many things we don't know (about the show), that I am just content finding out, as I watch each episode.
1 - Basically her in-laws had no use for her, and by saying that she committed suicide to follow her dead husband, they paint her as a virtuous woman and thus kill two birds with one stone (they get rid of her and get the associated honor/virtue that her death brings).
The girl that Minjoon refers to who dies is (I'm pretty sure) the Joseon doppleganger because he said that the girl who died was the first one to give him a gift, and in the first episode (I think) there was a flashback of the Joseon doppleganger giving him the gift of the painting
And thank you for your response! I am thinking that the child who died must be the doppelganger as well, yet I think 5 or 10% of me was not completely sure. Maybe meeting SY in present times is his opportunity to have a 2nd chance, and correct the past? Maybe I am reading too much into this show. I do find it fun to speculate about what happened, and what that might mean though.
1--I assumed what you said in your explanation yesterday, and for some reason, when YH said that her in-laws wanted something (or something along those lines), I wondered if there was something else her in-laws might have wanted (that I was not aware of). I am not very familiar with Korean traditions and values, and so I would rather ask than assume. Thank you for clarifying that for me.
2--I wrote that while I was still watching the episode, and at first, I was so surprised that I jotted that down. After watching the episode, I realized that the mom did pretend when the dad walked away, and I forgot to take that comment out when I posted my comment (the whole thing, I mean).
10--About the child/girl who died, in ep. 1 or 2 (whose dad gambled), thanks for reminding me of that. That would make some sense as well, though I am still curious as to whether she was the one who died, or YH was the one who ended up dying. I guess (and I hope) that we will find out eventually.
when you ask do you expect an answer on point? I mean everybody watched as much as you did, you ask what is behind that scene (sometimes just about what went on the scene), and we will give u answers that are just us guessing since we do not know the real answer, since that is exactly what the writers want, leave space to your imagination and they answer you later on... I may sound like a mean person, but Im actually curious
