PartOne introduced the importance of emotional intelligence, and Part Two focused on understanding emotions and patterns (our typical reactions). Now Part Three of this series explores how we can make a choice to respond rather than reacting.

Some Trouble Trains lead to hurt and sorrow, some lead to conflict, some lead to loneliness. Some Trouble Trains are worse, they could lead to violence, or danger, or jail, or being kicked off a team. While we can learn from these experiences, it would certainly be more pleasant to get off the train before it arrives at these destinations.

It can also be extra complicated in a situation with other people. Maybe you want to stop the train, but they are still pushing it forward. Sometimes when you try to make them stop, the situation seems to get worse, so instead of trying to stop the whole thing, just get yourself off. When you take responsibility for your own choices, that can make it much easier for others to do the same.

Simply recognizing that you have these other feelings can begin to change your emotions. You can intensify the more constructive or useful feelings by naming them, and remembering why you have those feelings. You can intensify any feeling by focusing on it.

In an old-fashioned steam train, when you shovel more coal into the fire, the train runs faster. What thoughts, feelings, and actions fuel your Trouble Train? You can slow the train by adding opposite thoughts, feelings, and actions.

One of the best ways to solve the Trouble Train problem is to stay off in the first place! There are always disappointments, differences of opinion, and challenges that could put you on the train, but there are other ways of responding.

I really love this work. You have framed this in a way that is understandable for children. I am unable to see the images that accompany the article. I remember seeing them some time ago and would like to use them with my own children as well as some students that I teach. Is there any chance that I could get hold of them.

Thanks Josh for the insightful article. I started reading it thinking of my grandchildren, but soon identified that I behave like this with my dear husband of nearly 50 years. Not too often, but the adrenalin pumps every now and then when he pushes my buttons. Your 6 second advice will be put to good use. 6 words in Italian for me!! No more trouble train in our household.

I agree with you when you said, there are times when you want to keep the fight going inspite of knowing its headed for an explosion, sometimes I can physically feel my body preparing for a fight, so like you suggested the first step is to recognize such patterns and decide to nip it.

Congratulations. It is very clear how you explain how emotions can be stronger and stronger, if we are not able to reflect on them. And the techniques or tools to handle these feelings are creative. Josh thanks for sharing.

Dear Josh, I love the trouble train idea for kids, I also like it for parents. There are times when disputes will be between children and many when they will be between parent and child. I think as parents we can play a role in whether we are helping to put our children on the trouble train or if we are reaching out to help them get off the trouble train. I have a four year old and two year old ,I wonder sometimes if they can reach the stop cord? As a parent,I believe its sometimes my responsiblity to change my response/ actions and words and reach that cord for them. Although I too can struggle to reach it! Thanks for this article, for all of our family.

I need a train from Rome Termini to Assisi on June 14. There are numerous options every day until June 10 - then from there on only one late evening train that arrives at 10:00 p.m. - to late to check into my lodging. I don't know what I am doing wrong...I have checked on both Italia Tren and Deutschebahn with same results.

Thanks so much for your help or insight,

Bonnie

Italy Train Schedules

Train schedules are uploaded by the rail company twice a year. Usually it happens mid June and mid December. It can happen that close to the travel date (mid JUL and DEC) the system does not reply with schedules. The issue is out of our control, and always the schedules are loaded. We ask you to be patient as the whole country in Italy suffer the same twice a year.

Yes, since it is a regional train, the schedule will not be released until close to the June 11 schedule revision. Italians are used to this and do not worry about it, as they know the schedule will probably not change. Tourists, on the other hand, get verklempt when they don't see the trains on the schedule for their date. Relax, it will show up and there is no need to buy in advance since the price never changes and they cannot sell out.

To tell the truth 90% of Italians have no idea there are 2 timetable changes any year, the reason is that no Italian would dream of checking the schedules of local trains and getting those tickets more than a week in advance.

It would be like running Now to the bakery around the corner and ask if they are selling bread in June. I am an exception because I've been commuting by train for decades, but you'd be surprised to learn how many commuters I see any day do not know there is a timetable change in June. Students know it because the schedules change when they stop going to school.

Trenitalia has already uploaded the schedules of high speed trains up to September 17 because they know Italians start looking for discounted tickets well in advance and they don't want Italotreno to get the early birds' money. But local trains, as Sam rightly pointed out, can't sell out and have no discounted tickets, so...

We decided to take the train called the Coast Starlight from Sacramento to Seattle. The mom had done this years ago and we thought it would be fun. The Coast Starlight part of the trip would take almost 24 hours, then we would take another train and a bus for the additional 17 hours of the trip.

Since it was so late, we had to have dinner in the dining car. You can eat in the dining car or have your meals delivered to your room when you order ahead. We thought we might do that for dinner the second night.

Now, you might think that was enough excitement for one trip, but in the wee hours of the morning, the train came to a halt once again. This time, it was not a nice, slow stop. We were rudely jolted around and we could hear the screeching of the wheels for what seemed like forever. Izzy and I looked at each other and ducked under the table. We stayed there for a good long while until the conductor came around telling passengers what had happened. There was a COW on the tracks! We never heard if the train actually hit the cow but we wondered if we would have steak for dinner that night.

We spent the rest of the day alternately napping and enjoying the spectacular views from the parlor car. Later in the afternoon there was a wine and cheese party. We had some appetizers and refreshing nip tea.

My human has taken the Coast Starlight, but from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo! She has also taken the Pacific Surfliner from L.A. to San Juan Capistrano. She is looking forward to Amtrak allowing pets onboard so she can take me!

Instead of using the trains, they will need to use Bridge Security, which will be the main checkpoint starting at 8 p.m. Instead of using trains, buses will shuttle passengers to those concourses. Signs and airport staff will provide on-site instructions.

When I was a kid, I used to love travelling on trains. Getting into one of those old single carriages, where you could pull down the window and stick your head out to feel the wind in your hair as you sped along. I remember it was cheap too, just 15p to go 10 stops. Ah, those were the days!

So, I was kind of looking forward to my train journey today. I had to go over to the far side of town in order to sign on at the JobCentre. There used to be a bus that went there, but budget cuts had consigned that service to memory only; apparently the money was needed to do other basics, like emptying the bins. But the train would do me. Or so I thought.
