And what better cause than assisting BEACH House in its critical service to provide a safe place for children and families who are at risk. The kids who reside at BEACH House each have a unique story. Some are on the run from abusive relationships. For others communication in the home has broken down to the point where it is safer for everyone to have a child reside a BEACH House while the family gets healing therapy. Here is a story on a recent youth..

Chip’s (not his real name for confidentiality reasons) success story is one of patience and perseverance. Chip came to BEACH House about four years ago. Chip was referred by his mother initially for being ungovernable at home and periodically skipping class. Chip was referred to the Outward Bound program and on the day of admission he refused to sign the paperwork. After three separate B.E.A.C.H. House stays he was not attending school at all. Chip’s future was uncertain and looked bleak.

During his three separate stays in shelter in 2011 his behaviors ranged from beyond control at home to being truant from school. He had anger issues and was violent and assaultive towards his mother. He was always claiming to be sick. He starved himself and had many visits to the doctor’s office. Before his last shelter stay he had an anxiety attack and was Baker Acted. At the end of 2011 Chip was not attending school at all.

A referral was made for Chip to attend the Florida Youth Challenge Academy (FLYCA). Once again on the day of admission Chip refused. After that refusal Chip made a promise to Ms. Boyce his service manager and his mother that he would attend the next time he was able to enroll.

For those of you who do not know FLYCA is a 17 ½ month voluntary program geared toward at risk youth age 16 to 18. The residential phase takes place in a highly disciplined and motivational environment that promotes structure and academics along with leadership, health, community service, life skills, job skills, physical fitness and citizenship. An individual needs to be highly motivated to enter this program and continue to be highly motivated to complete it and graduate.

Chip kept his word this time and he is currently at FLYCA and has made a complete change in the direction of his life. Since admission Chip has made changes in his personal appearance by cutting his hair and gaining muscle weight. Chip has also passed the GED exam on his first try. Chip has taken the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and passing this test will allow him to enter the U.S. Marines. This is now the goal of a teenage boy that is growing into a man. Remember this is a story of a delinquent youth that had quite school all together.

Ms. Boyce, the B.E.A.C.H. House shelter staff and his mother were all patient with Chip and kept planting those seeds day after day. All those team members added in their own way and persevered in doing their part and along that journey Chip started doing his part.

The Run for Runaways is held at the Ocean Deck on Daytona Beach. This will be the third year that the Ocean Deck has hosted the event. It's a great venue for pre-race and post-race activities.
