There once was a very tough little Jew who grew up in the Boyle
Heights burrough, ghetto, 'district' (call it what you will) of L.A.

Say of him what you will, given his reputation as a gangster, gambler,
smoking gun-man, the one thing you can't take away from him is that no
Jew of the American underworld ever came so close to being a "made
man" as did the Mick, not even Meyer or Benny, because Mickey is the
guy that the outfit in New York had picked to run L.A. That's right,
and this was over and above the two made guys in that town, Johnny
Roselli and Jack Dragna. This was one TOUGH little Jew, make no
mistake about it.
Now, before anybody gets all upset and starts accusing me of
glorifying this guy--forget it, okay? That's not my purpose at all!
While researching this project I got going, I bought Mickey's
autobiography on Amazon to the purpose of getting my facts straight.
So, it's the facts, Ma'am, just the facts is all we want:
FACT: Over $100,000 (possibly closer to $200k) of Mickey's money went
to fund the Israeli guerrilla IRGUN resistance. Naturally, there's a
lot of Jews who would like to see this little known fact kept quiet--
and there's been a pretty good job done of it, because if you do a
Google search like [Mickey Cohen IRGUN] all you get is 1,460 hits.
Fortunately, far as I've checked there are as yet little or no hits
from anti-Jewish or anti-Zionist sites. Another testament to the
ignorance and illiteracy that is the foundation stone on that end of
the opinion spectrum. However, many are the hits of Jewish origin,
treating it like a hot potato, so nervously, quickly and dismissively
that the FACTS WHICH SERVE TO PULL THE FUSE FROM IT to make it of no
use to the enemies of Israel simply don't come out. They drop the
potato, it becomes an uncapped grenade. So here's the facts every Jew
and friend to Israel must have at his command for the day that this
old killer-diller Big Band music comes blasting out to hit the
fan . . .
FACT: Most of the money that the Mick raised in support of the
underground Palestine Jewish Resistance went toward the purchase of
the notorious tramp freighter, Altalena and whatever proportion of its
cargo in armaments. But as anyone who is up on Israeli history knows,
the ship never made it to port, and due to the strength of Haganah
intelligence, Ben Gurion gave orders to blow that baby up right off
the beach at Tel Aviv.
Those are the facts that Jews, and Gentiles in solidarity with Jews
must be armed with NOW, before the day arrives when that 1,460 hits
climbs by a factor of 100 or 1,000. It was a sad day for the Mick
though, when news of that came back to him at his jazzy little
haberdashery in the Wilshire district. It was about the only thing he
had going for his conscience to have it infused with a little warming
squirt of righteousness--well that, and the other thing of course: the
Sammy Davis Jr. thing.
Nobody could have taken that away from him, not even the Outfit of
made men in New York and Chicago, when the orders came down to Mickey
for a "knock-out" on the popular jazz singer/dancer in order to stop
that affair he'd been having with Kim Novak. It was a little favor
being asked gratis to Harry Cohn. What the Mob in New York and Harry
Cohn didn't know was that Sammy was one of Mickey's most treasured
friends. And for this little Jew it didn't matter worth spit what the
big shots out East wanted done. He wasn't going to do it, as in fact
he went ahead and put Sammy hip to it quick, right after he paid Harry
at Columbia a visit to make it very plain that if ANYTHING happened to
Sammy Davis Jr. over this, the SAME THING was coming to Harry Cohn,
fellow Jew or no fellow Jew; big boss of Columbia or the other big
boss in New York of the whole nationwide Outfit.
So, you gotta give him that. Maybe not a memorial at Yad Vashem, if
only a smoke stained brick from the old King David Hotel with "Meyer
H. Cohen" engraved on it, and buried under six feet of dirt. It's
okay. I got the memorial in my record collection, a couple LP's by
Sammy Davis Jr. made since the day Mickey Cohen read the riot act to
Frank Costello, and lived till he died a natural death before being
gathered to the bosom of his fathers--if not Abraham, then somebody
just as tough in the way of being faithful to a friend.
And speaking of that--what of our friends in Canada, these two
students, one Israeli and the other a Gentile in Solidarity with
Israel being chased through the streets of Gatineau while a machete
was being swung at their necks, and shouts of "Zionists! Dirty Jews!"
rang and echoed around the city streets. How about that? In another
newsgroup, I had these few words to say about it . . .

Are Jews going to be put on the run by this AGAIN? That answer is NO.
This is a time for decent Gentiles to stand up and be counted in the
fight, to stand behind the Jewish guy and girl. It is time for that
lovely myth about the Danes who donned the Star of David in support of
Jews be made real. Has the Gentile community got the compassion, or
call it "the guts" for it? To find out what it's like to walk in the
Jews shoes for a change? Would you dare walk down the street with a
Magen David baseball cap on your head? If you could never bring
yourself to wear a Star of David t-shirt to your classes in college,
ask yourself! Is another Holocaust possible? -- JM

How do a pack of lip-serving hypocrites talk when they've been called
out BIG TIME to put the big gold money of their hearts where their
mouths are? Get a load of this one from one the highly "progressive"
liberals who often speaks against anti-Semitism at rec.arts. books --
"Your reaction is almost as over the top as that of the idiots who
attacked the students. You are talking about Canada, probably the most
civilized country in the world. But even Canadians should avoid
getting drunk. I do hope they find and prosecute the attackers."

Unfortunately I could never get past the moderator here, what I had to
say to that gent, NOR what I had in reply for his next, because you
see, in my book, since that machete in Gatineau, with me now, the
GLOVES ARE OFF. Okay? I have gone into BEAR JEW mode--even though I am
not a Jew, officially speaking. My father who worked for Warner Bros.
during the Mickey Cohen years WAS a Jew, and though he never came
right out and told me about it, there's something telling me he knew
Mickey through certain Union business, what-all, and knew him pretty
good--which is beside the point. Last time Jews were being chased
through city streets, there were FEW tough, stand-up Jews around to
put the early kibosh to it. THIS TIME there better be, baby. This is
the time for Jews to take a tip from History, that there comes a point
where the GLOVES COME OFF, and where WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND.
So . . .
I don't mince words with this quisling scum. I lived on the street
plenty in my time when I was young, and I can talk trash to trash good
as it ever comes, and I say it's come time. Maybe not for you, but
for me, I am the guy who made a solemn oath to myself one day when I
broke down in tears right in Study Hall, having come to the part in
the book where Dov Landau is telling his story to Akiva Ben Canaan--
and as I was sitting in public and couldn't help myself--ONLY when I
got mad over it, could I get hold of it; if not of my grief, then of
that squirming worm of shame eating at my HEART over what had been
done to my Father's people, and as shame turned to rage, I made a
promise to myself, MY DEAR PEOPLE that in the day I should live so
long as to see all this getting started all over again, I SWORE, I
clenched a fist to my chest and I SWORE- if I should have to FIGHT
with every fiber that is in me against it, win or lose, whether it can
do the least good or not, I will FIGHT at least against the shame of
knowing otherwise that when I had the chance to do SOMETHING, instead
I was afraid and did nothing.
I am swearing now, and in BIG FOUR LETTER WORDS to let them know, or
at least cause them to suppose, or nervously suspect that there might
be some Jews out here, who in order to stand behind the OATH, 'Never
Again' will stop at NOTHING to stop it. I say it again. Stop at
NOTHING, NOTHING short of what is not legal or non-violent. Let me
channel all that violence into the kind of words that are calculated
to BLOW THEIR HEADS OFF. You HAVE BEEN FOREWARNED: Don't click unless
you are TOUGH enough to STAND UP TO IT like that little Jew with the
Magen David on his trunks . . .
